I'm English and only regard it as a bit of so called football banter. It works the other way round too, just sections of football fans having a bit of pop at each other thinking they are winding the other set of fans up. Bit Meaningless and yesterday really but there you go.

538 is probably the best site for analysis of US politics and has branched out into sports betting - they rate Newcastle as the 53rd strongest club in the world and Hibs at 409. I'm sure there's an argument to be had about how they produce their ratings - but they are systematic and trying to be objective about it.
