Anyone know Sporting's stadium at all?

In Lisbon for the week and will go along to see them play Valencia tomorrow. I can wear my Hibs scarf!

I'm looking to sit behind the goals but not sure where the Sporting fans sit - North or South. Want the busier stand bit need to buy my ticket online. Tried asking about and even in their shop in town but don't think they understood my accent!

Any help much appreciated...

The Sporting fans sit everywhere. The flag waving ultras are behind the goals to the right of the dugouts. Apologies for that being no help. It would probably take me until tomorrow afternoon to work out north or south.

It’s a fabulous stadium, easy to get to on the metro. Enjoy your visit.

You do realise that when Hibs fans wear scarves at our games it's not so they can keep warm-it's to display the team colours?

Jose Alvalade is a fantastic stadium and very easy to get to on the metro, green line to Campo Grande, across the walkway and then you are there.

The away fans only get a tiny corner that is heavily fenced in. From memory, if you were a player coming out the tunnel the away fans would be 2:00. I have been there a few times but always in the home sections.

Having been at league and European games, the police are quite strict about escorting the away support in and out.

The first time we went it took a while to find our section and we ended up walking right round the stadium, but it is about the size of Murrayfield so it isn’t desperate. Give yourself a bit of time though.

If you are looking for a drink beforehand, we have only ever drunk in the city centre and then got the metro out. I think there are bars around the stadium, and it is built on a shopping mall which probably has bars but have never used them. The stadiums are licensed anyway, for all games now I believe.

You ever been to Rotterdam? What’s it like if you have?Yes twice, lived with family friend, was many years back so didn't really do a great deal, I love ships (Dad ex Merchant Seaman) so spent a lot of time down the dock area, Delfshaven, Botlek and Wallhaven, stayed with the family in Kop Van Zuid, hoping to finally take in a game, you heading over at some point ?

No problemo, or whatever they say in Lisbon.

I bought a Sporting scarf from one of the stalls outside the metro station when I was there. I mean, it’s green and white, what’s not to like 😂

There’s a couple of bars in the small shopping mall at the station (and a Lidl in the stadium) They were an absolute hoot, for reasons I can’t go into on a public forum. And I’m not even a bus driver 😂

:aok: Looking forward to it. I love taking in a football match overseas when I can. Seeing its a friendly I doubt there will be that many there.

I'd read that Sporting were perhaps traditionally more the middle class club in Lisbon but about half of Portugal supports Benfica... Anyways they're the only show in town this week and there's the green and white connection as well.

Have a soft spot for teams that wear our colours (barring a rather obvious one not that far away) as there are not all that many in world football.

Someone else might know better than me here (I'm a benfica man) but at Luz, there is a massive fan park outside the ground, great atmosphere and live bands. (They sell real beer there) I would assume it's the same at sporting

I've been known to occasionally wear a Hibs top when watching Ostersund home & away. Every Scot in Sweden stops for a chat.
Wouldn't wear it if the away team plays in green though!

I get a bit mixed up because I go to both Portugal and the Czech Republic at least twice a year, usually more often and get to as many games as possible.

i was convinced it was alcoholic beer in Portugal, maybe banned for European games, but that ban was lifted this year. Saying that, I was at Belenenses recently and that maybe was non-alcohol.

I think Czesky might have lifted it for European matches, and it has always been alcoholic beer for domestic games. My kitchen is full of plastic tumblers with Antonin Pananka on them that have been acquired at Bohemians, but I know from going to Slavia ECL games that it used to be dry but that changed.

Been to Benfica games a number of times- we have family connections in Portugal so it becomes a given that we go to games featuring the Lisbon teams and try and fit them all in as much as possible.

I have never been attracted to Benfica. Their fans always seem to have a sense of entitlement. They very much come across as the Portuguese version of Rankgers which is a shame for them but true, nevertheless.

By the same token, they have a special connection to a song that predates ‘Sunshine on Leith’ and is similarly emotional, and sung before every match.

No worries. I've been to Luz about 10 times this year. Definitely only the alcohol free sagres in there. As I say, outside, they encourage you to drink as much as you want. Wish we could do similar in the east and west car parks at ER

Cheers, that’s a lot of trips, you should post a thread about your experiences as it is something that is very accessible for your average Scottish punter and I think a lot of folk on here would do it and benefit from others’ advice

Benfica is very accessible, we usually get the train to the shopping centre and then a taxi home, it is tempting to have a couple of gingas in the mall, and like you say, the stalls are set up outside on both sides of the ground.

In the lower leagues they still have bars inside or on the terrace. My favourite is the Immortal Bar at Albeferia.

If you are Hibs and in Lisbon then Belenenses are the team to see. If nothing else because they only had success just after WW2, same as we did. Lisbon has two big clubs, a bit like Scotland. I don’t mind Sporting, can’t warm to Benfica, Belenenses are the perennial might-achieve team.

They used to be based out at a great little stadium on the west outskirts, which had views of Christo del Rey and was right beside a heritage-listed monastery. I understand they have moved closer into the city now.

I think we would if we had been as successful as them. They are the peoples team and fans used to vent opposition at gamestop the military dictatorship. They also had a black player in the early sixties. The area around the stadium used to look like a third world slum when I first went there in early seventies. I went to European Cup final in 68 with my mother and cried all through extra time. I was 11 at the time. Stiles kicked Eusebio off the park as he did in 66. Lisbon a great city and Friday night is like a drunken night in a Scottish city.

Yeah, get your point about the club. When they sing the club song it is really passionate.

One hundred percent agree that Lisbon is a great city, I’m a bit younger so don’t have the memory of Eusebio and the like.

Happy to spend time there though, it is a proper city, touristy now yes, but a working city too.

In some ways it feels like a Birmingham, Manchester or Glasgow. No shortage of cultural attractions but an industrial city, no mistake.

It is a capital though and you can’t mistake that when you walk past the parliament or go onto Praca do Comercio.

My mother from Lisboa and still have cousins and nephews there. We are all Benfuca. Great food and drinking. Very friendly city but dangerous because of the extreme poverty there. My mother was an oppositionist to the dictatorship and said she only felt safe in the Luiz. Scotland took her as a political refugee in 1953 and she loved the freedom and sense of community here. Unfortunately she became a Celtic fan!

The fans of Belenenses have protested the owners, chucked them out of the stadium and formed their own club in the lower leagues.
I think c500 a week watch the professional team, whereas last season an average of about 5000 were watching division 4 team

I heard about this. The Belenenses ground is a cracking wee place, proper old school and the new lower league club have taken the stadium and the pro side are playing in the city I think?

Crucially, like you say, the fans stuck behind the semi-pros even though they are several tiers lower as a consequence.

Just to keep it Hibs-related - I think we were Belenenses’ first ever European opponents.

It is a nice area with some wonderful historical sites. Many years ago my cousin and our sons went to the old national stadium. It was disused at the time and we took a ball on the pitch and renacted the 67 final.

Got to the match - which Sporting lost to Valencia 2-1 - without any issues. Stadium great and very easy to get to as posted on here. Good atmosphere given it was just a friendly and 36,000 in attendance which is impressive. Their ultras sit in the South lower, behind the goals and sang all game. This was the only game I could attend when here and I always try to take in a match overseas when I can.

Sporting didn't look particularly good, too ponderous. They had all those players quit the club after being attacked by fans, not sure if the club has recovered from all the chaos surrounding it. Valencia were pretty clinical and moved the ball a lot quicker without looking like getting out of second gear.

Incidentally Hibs handed Sporting one of their heaviest European defeats in 1972. A 6-1 second leg drubbing at ER. Think it may have even been their record Euro defeat at the time.

Have really enjoyed reading some of the posts relating to folks connections with Lisbon and their take on the clubs here. We are a broad church the Hibernian family it seems. Cheers and thanks for the help. GGTTH :flag:

They either source from South America or develop through their academy. Foot is still very much a street/beach game in Portugal and that is where the raw natural talent is developed. The league teams all run these academies where the raw talent is fed in from an early age. A huge amount of sport science as well as tactical and technical skills are applied at them. There are no boys clubs as such. It us very elitist. If you don't have the skills then it is street or beach football for you.
