It's what the big teams do. I remember reading or watching an interview in which Alex MacDonald said that his double winning Hearts team of 1986 ate, played and slept together.

Any fans in Baku with his name on their shirts run the risk of getting the **** kicked out of them. Either by the public or the security services.
Kind of like wading into the old jungle at Parkhead in 1991 with a Mo Johnston T-shirt on

For all the negatives of the game being hosted in Baku, it does raise hopes that Robbie Savage will get lost on the way home.

It is nice of the TV companies to recreate the sensation of watching from the nosebleed seats without leaving the sofa, though.

Sound is like watching an old clip from the 1978 World Cup.

Stadium is also part of the euro 2020 tournament.

To be fair I can see the sense in that one as the general idea of the multiple venues was to take events to such places that could host a game or two but not a whole tournament, and at least there would be plenty of time for fans to confirm travel arrangements. Club finals are by nature short-term affairs and so should be held somewhere with at least semi-reasonable transport links.

Why would anyone need to sort travel from Edinburgh for an international quarter final?

Presumably it’ll be a mapped route to the final as per so it will at least be narrowed down a bit as to who will play there. An international quarter final isn’t really comparable to a club final IMHO although I get your point.

Whole thing is a bit surreal and everything that's wrong about modern football. Two teams who don't really want to be there (prefer to be in the CL or CL final), who don't really value the trophy, who are there because of money in a stadium full of neutrals sitting on the erkies. It's as close to a sham as UEFA could have stage-managed.

The contrast between this sham and the CL Final in Madrid will be as stark as we'll ever see. Liverpool and Tottenham are proper clubs with proper fans, played in a city of genuine football pedigree. Tonight's apology for a cup final is not even an aperitif.

Why not just rip up the Baku deal when the finalists were confirmed and play it at Wembley?! Two clubs 10 miles apart and the fans are paying silly money and travelling for long hours to a country next door to Iran into a terrible stadium.

Did he not win the World Cup without scoring a goal?

Without a shot on target I thought?

Ozil was hilarious tonight. These days he plays football like a guy permanently trying to avoid getting injured. Even in a major final, just appeared to be not that bothered about putting some effort in.

His team are a couple of goals down in a major final he gets subbed looks over to the bench as if it is the biggest injustice ever despite having barely touched the ball and as slowly as possible strolls off the pitch. An absolute clown. Ability to die for however plays the game in second gear and the heart of a chicken.

In European terms it's a **** hole. There's plenty of safe countries that could have hosted it.

Have you been there? It’s far from a ****hole

That was the most un European final European final I've ever seen. Felt like a pre season friendly

Yep was like one of the preseason tour games in US or Australia.

£500 for a return flight Edinburgh to Baku, via Istanbul. Though maybe they put prices up for the final?

Assume there would be no 'maybe' about it. :greengrin

Visited in 2013 and found Baku a pleasant enough place for a couple of days. Outside the centre you quickly become aware that western modernity has not reached all of Azerbaijan just yet though and I would imagine Gabala - where our former goalie Graeme Smith had a spell as well as a few other Scottish pros - would not be on the same level as Baku. I'd go back and would certainly hope to be in attendance if Hibs were ever drawn against an Azeri side.

He's perfect for Arsenal. Over paid and consistently under performing and under delivering. In fact he's like a one man Arsenal metaphor.

I now dislike Arsenal with an irrationality that is hard to explain. I think it's got something to do with their serial ineffectual lack of achievement season after season despite fairly hefty resources.

Probably the worst European final I have ever watched, pathetically one sided and a lesson to UEFA to at least think of an alternative venue plan in circumstances like last nights.

Its clear that English clubs have little regard for the Europa league … they strive to make it into the top half of the EPL and then moan like **** about how Europe impacts on their league campaign the following season. If anything proves the disparity its watching some clubs treat as an afterthought a competition that if the likes of Hibs were to win it would be the greatest achievement in our club's history.

Absolutely this.
And you have commentators aligning the success if the english teams with the success of the english national team.
Funny really

Not really - think it through. When you have a league dominated by overseas players then the English players that get into any of the first teams are pretty much the best of the homegrown talent. This makes it easier for the National coach to pick his squad. IMO there are far too many overseas players in the UK leagues but freedom of movement prevents any legislation to address the problem (Brexit would probably help but maybe a bit drastic for a football problem).

I think it was the Dutch league but they have/used to have a gentleman’s agreement from all clubs for a homegrown quota. Would love something like that in Scotland.

Scottish teams have enough homegrown players though, no need for it.

It would have meant more to Chelsea had they won to qualify for the champions league.

Pathetic celebrations from Chelsea. You’ve just won a European trophy.

The only thing more embarrassing than being in the europa League is not winning it. None of the top 6 teams in England should want to be near it but if they are they either have to play youngsters and happily go out or win it.

Shockingly bad stadium. It looked worse than Hampden. And while you obviously can't predict who's going to get to the final and they have to do a bit of venue planning. Baku was always going to be a nightmare to get to for everybody.

Pretty much sums up UEFA's attitude to fans.

Biggest problem with Europa League for me is letting teams that fail in the Champions League drop into it, completely devalues it and also unfair on the other teams

I turned it off after 10 mins.

The TV cameras seemed to be miles away from the pitch and I hope the spectators were issued with binoculars when they entered the stadium.

I'm not sure when the stadium was constructed but it's certainly not "football friendly."

Completely agree; UEFA should end that.

The game itself had an odd atmosphere, as two London clubs played in the middle of nowhere, with hardly any supporters there. Very easy for Chelsea in the end.

I don't think you read my post properly as your reply is completely unrelated to the points I made.
