Football is saturated in constant gambling advertising. It's as self-destructive and has a big impact on family and friends as drinking and smoking. Make it a taboo to advertise like the other two are. :agree:

What an arse. There is no other purpose for him to do this but to kill the competition. Advertising isn't the problem, it's the systems within the company that will protect problem gamblers.

You've always got to be cynical about motives when this comes from someone in his position, but he is correct.

Based on no facts whatsoever (other than, er, a bit of personal experience) I get the feeling the whole nation is being sucked into a gambling addiction epidemic.

It's impossible to escape from, so an advertising ban would help.

Interesting that neither Ladbrokes nor Coral have a single shirt advertising deal … I stand to be corrected, but I cant recall one. Any sign of the guy calling for a league or cup sponsorship ban? As others have alluded to all this smacks of putting down the competition rather than a serious attempt to address problem gambling. If he wants to do that he could always call for a ban on betting aps so that folk don't have instant access where they can chase their losses … some chance.

As things stand though I do think we are approaching the time when the government are going to step in and put a stop to shirt advertising as the first step to curbing gambling advertising the way the did with tobacco and to a lesser extent alcohol. In view of that Hibs need to get ahead of the game and look to secure a major sponsor outside of gambling when the Marathon Bet deal expires.

I was a gambler who has a serious problem, not had a bet for over 6 years but I wouldn’t call myself a daftie, I had a serious problem that I’m fortunate to have come through with the support of my family and friends.

I remember thinking you would see a gambling advert on tv during the day then immediately followed up by a pay day loan advert it was cold and calculated and I hate to think of the amount of people like myself that have had this seriously impact, ruin and cost people their life’s in some cases.

Gambling is a social issue that needs to be recognised as such by the government with stricter controls in place.

The advertising aside, it’s a positive to see Ladbrokes are increasing their contribution into research, treatment projects and education, that can only help imo.

I was in a Ladbrokes shop to put a bet on a horse the day after the FOBT stake reduction came into force. At the counter I was presented with a little booklet with a whole list of offers. 'Bet £10 on any slot game and get £10 free' 'sign up online and get 20 free spins', 'bet using a self service terminal and get £5 on us'. They were all dated to be used over the course of a few weeks and were quite obviously aimed at both keeping people using the FOBTs and diverting them to other forms of gambling.

I'm not anti gambling, I think it's quite obvious I enjoy a bet, but the lack of regulation on the advertising and promotion of a potentially dangerous product is staggering. I bought a new pair of running shoes the other day and when they were delivered the parcel contained a promotional offer for an online bingo site and another for Virgin Games online casino. Watching sport on TV and you are bombarded with adverts quite explicitly stating gambling on the event will make it more fun. It's everywhere and that must be a huge issue for someone with a problem.

I had a nice win on a football acca a couple of months back - decided to draw out enough cash to pay for my season ticket from Ladbrokes app so I didnt spend the winnings :greengrin

What is weird is - after my win - I was bombarded with emails and popups on the app for their "Casino" stuff and other types of betting that I am not interested in.

Seemed to me a clear strategy to relieve me of the cash I had just won.............

I recently signed up for sky sports and was blown away by the number adverts focussed on gambling. It seemed like every second advert, as well as sponsers on shirts, around the stadiums and anywhere else they can use is used as promo for gambling.

I hope we decide to go elsewhere with our sponsorship next season and don't end up with another bookie on the shirt, but money talks I suppose.

A massive :top marks:aok: well done on getting your addiction under control, once you are in it's grip it is almost impossible to stop until you hit the bottom.
Like the bookies i am cold and calculating given they basically collect money from their customers.
I would go as far as to say that the puggy's in their shops cause many users to commit crime to feed the machines. Accordingly, betting shops with these machines are indirectly responsible for robberies, housebreaking and shoplifting. They should be removed from betting shops and pubs immediately.
Online betting is also a disgrace making it nigh on impossible for folks with a problem to get a grip on their addiction. This is made even worse by real time odds advertising on televised matches. Unfortunately the genie is out the bottle on online betting and it can never be put back in.

IMO its the modern day feature of instant access which has ramped up the problem. Back in the day many people who may not have had a problem with folk gambling wouldn't have been seen dead in a bookies shop especially women, even if they maybe did have a punt on the Grand National and the Derby.

IMO the introduction of bandits in pubs started the problem, you could stand in front of it for hours chasing your losses … one fateful night many years ago I lost half my wages in a couple of hours, the shame of having to lie to my wife of the time God rest her cured me of gambling for life, apart from one day a year ( Cheltenham Gold cup day ) which I spend in the pub with my mates gambling money I am fully prepared and able to lose.

Now you can sit in the comfort of your own home and chuck good money after bad 24 hours a day. There is no stigma attached any more as it may have been in the past if you were seen hanging around the bookies all day and even then at least the bookies closed at 5pm giving punters the chance to sleep on it before madly chasing after a winning streak following loss after loss. Its no coincidence that bookmakers now have sites specifically aimed at women like Foxy Bingo and Pink Casino.

Its not advertising that's the problem IMO its instant 24 hour and private access to gambling sites that's the problem.

Online gambling especially casino style is now a ticking time bomb, even now at least the bookies shut at 10, online you can lie in your cot at 3am doing your brains on roulette or slots!

The £2 clampdown on the FOBT’S in the bookies has helped but the government needs to really get the online side under control.

Direct advertising is an issue but there’s also a rising issue of indirect advertising on social media where “affiliates” of online casinos stream themselves playing and sometimes for nose bleed stakes, which leads to “big scores”, what’s not explained to the viewers who may end up doing their money is that when they sign up to the casino through the streamers website links the streamer gets a cut of the poor mugs deposits and losses!

The cynicism me also thinks GVC May well have been told by the government to stop the advertising or “we’ll stop it for you”, better to look like you’re trying to be a good guy rather than being brought to heel by the government.
