For, er...being a woman.

I suspect the female judge may have some explaining to do.

Do male drink drivers get custodial sentences usually?

That sounds like the judge was trying to frighten the woman into sorting herself out.

Yes they do.

That sounds like the judge was trying to frighten the woman into sorting herself out.

Perhaps so. But she based her judgement on gender specifics, rather than applying the law.

Yes they do.

I thought most drink drivers got a fine and a ban.

I thought most drink drivers got a fine and a ban.

I imagine it depends whether they injure anyone with their actions:

I didn't realise that.

Strange one, indeed.

The judge should be struck off for that. Absolute disgrace to come out with something like that.

While the woman judge has probably made a faux pas in what's she's said while handing down the sentence there's lots of presidence for 3+ drink driving not being jailed.

She's also made it quite clear that unless this alchy sorts herself out she will be jailed.

My money is on her being jailed despite the judges best intentions.

Do you think the judge just handed out the same punishment as anyone would have got, but added the "if you were a man" bit to try to give the woman a bit of a fright about the reality of going to jail soon? :dunno:

It sounds sexist on the face of it, but there is maybe some context going unreported if it's true that men and woman have both escaped jail time for the same. Which is another arguement in itself.

Seems to me the judge has exercised fairness here.
