Europe: highest coefficient tally for 11 years

We contributed to this being the best year for European coefficient points gathering for 11 years, with our longest run in Europe since 1973.

Would have been much more, had Aberdeen been given a more favourable draw

Interesting to see that the Scandinavian countries are mostly in the same "grouping" as Scotland.

Unfortunately, as it's so grating, rangers and Celtic doing well is good for us long term. If Scotland can get an extra European spot it means we are more likely to get one of them regularly. Regular trips to Europe is a great draw for new players and more money in the pot. But obviously domestically the financial gap will only widen.

Doesn’t have to be Rangers or Celtic. Any team doing well in Europe would be good for us.

If we can replicate that for a few more years we'll get another CL place back. It'll probably coincide with Rangers pulling away from all the non-Celtic teams again.

Rangers and Celtic have almost always done ok in Europe.

The problem has been the abysmal performances of all the other clubs in Europe over the past few decades.

That should improve with Scottish Cup runners up getting their one-off trip in the pish taken off them.

The coefficient rising will mainly fall to ourselves, Aberdeen, Hearts and possibly Killie qualifying regularly, gaining experience and building year on year.

Whether we like it or not, the reason the Scotland coefficient dropped so low was the absence of Rangers from European competition.

After next season Scotland will move up to 18th and the season after that will take our place in the top 15.

If Scottish teams continue to perform in Europe as they did this season we will find ourselves in 11th in 4 seasons time.

The top 7 countries are set in stone well out of our reach.

2008/09 - knocked out by FBK Kaunas in the Second Qualifying Round of the Champions League

2009/10 - started in the CL groups, lost four, drew two, including a 4-1 pumping at Ibrox from Unirea Urziceni

2010/11 - again started in the CL groups, won just one game and finished third. Went in the Europa League, drew both legs against Sporting and went through on away goals. Knocked out in the last 16 by PSV

2011/12 - knocked out by Malmo in the Third Qualifying Round of the Champions League, dropped down to the Europa League and were immediately dispatched by Maribor

They performed shockingly in those four seasons, and it was that which saw the beginning of Scotland's coefficient slide.

They won one game in European football between June 2008 and June 2017, and that was at home to Bursapor.

At the moment their are only 4 European slots for Scottish teams but once we reach 15th there will be an extra place and we could easily be the team benefiting from that.
We are looking like finishing 6th this season but would be looking to be in the top 5 most seasons after that so if you want us to have regular European football you need to hope all Scottish clubs playing in Europe can at least keep this seasons performance level up and that includes Rangers whether you hate them or not.

I understand that but for Scotland to fall to 26th rated league in Europe at the start of this season was beyond the pale.
Don't think any team from Scotland other than Celtic had contributed to our coefficient in the previous 5 years.
Aberdeen, Hearts, St Johnstone, Motherwell seemed to get bucketed in the preliminary rounds every season.
We actually did well to beat the Greek team this season.

I would rather any 5th place we got would go to the league cup winner, before the 4/5th placed league side, depending on cup winners.
