Folk I've spoken to today seem a bit apprehensive about Heckingbottom, but that's only because they, like myself, have no idea how it will go. He's an unknown quantity. I get the feeling he will need to make a good start, in order to win the fans over.

He's an unknown quantity? Seriously? Maybe at Hibs. Just as every other manager is when they join us.

I feel a bit sorry for people who genuinely can't be positive and optimistic about this. Especially after what we've just endured over the last few months.

First time in a while I'm buzzing for Saturday. And it's only Hamilton!

Appreciate though that everyone has different views.

:agree:

I also think the feelgood factor needs to be re-established very quickly. We had become used (at least up to earlier on this season) to a certain style of football from Stubbs and then Lennon: and the SCF and promotion followed by 4th spot led to record STs and highest average gates for decades. That can unravel as quickly as it built up so this appointment needs to work pretty much from the off.

I'm hopeful rather than confident that Heckingbottom can take us back up the league and do it in an entertaining manner.

If we get knocked down, we get up again cause it’s never going to keep us down 👍

Is he going to have "media commitments" like Lennon had?

With a name like Heckingbottom, I'm hoping he doesn't have to sod off back to Yorkshire to cover the sheepdog trials or anything like that.

And can we always have the Hovis advert music playing in the background during his after match interviews?

Heartbeat song when we pump them at Easter Road will be decent 👍

I really like the way he was speaking about being obsessive about tactics, reading about 10 ways to beat Sarri's 433 at Napoli and so on.

Pffft, last time we played napoli we pumped them 5-0 😀😀

Heckingbottom isn't just unknown amongst the Hibs support. Very few people outside of Barnsley and Leeds will know much of him. It's totally understandable, therefore, that a lot of fans are reserving judgement. It's a bold appointment by the board; it would have been safer for them to go for a more established name.

Indeed yep that's my life as a Hibs fan.
In my line of work I have met many many people with degrees and diplomas in all sorts or associated fields who have brought nothing to the position other than those "paper proofs". A masters degree in a sports theory doesn't really count for much IMvHO.
I'm only saying the truth in how I feel. I wholeheartedly hope that I am wrong.
Had he been the messiah for Leeds and left after years of success and having brought them cups and titles then of course I would feel differently. I'm pretty sure thats human nature. I don't think there are many on here that are absolutely jumping with excitement with the appointment which they may well have been with a household name. Leeds gave him a couple of months before making the call which is also worrying. Though I suppose you would say "Look at Brian Clough" however BC was very much a household name and the Leeds fans definitely were jumping up and down when they landed him.

Again, I hope I'm wrong but I am very underwhelmed.
Time is not something football fans give players let alone unheard of managers.
It's not just the masters degree though, he's got hundreds, probably thousands of coaching hours at a very good level under his belt as well.

I think his degree was sports coaching, rather than sports theory as well, by the way.

Don't be blinded by fame or reputation but give every candidate an equal chance.

I have good feeling about him but like everyone else I'll reserve judgment.

I had hoped Stubbs would come back and that the feel good factor would return to the Club. It may well just be me but I definitely felt that the club was on a high and the supporters were finally behind the club when Stubbs and Doolan were here. It decreased under Lennon and Was not particularly bothered when he left/was sacked. Stubbs win rate was way above Lennons and the vast majority of managers we had been used to and for that reason I was hoping that we would look to get him back. Let's face it he was always going to say yes and he knew a lot of the players.
We now have a guy (possibly second choice) I have never heard of and as someone else pointed out that may be my lack of knowledge on the English game but I think it was the wrong choice especially as we are in a very dangerous period. We need success to keep the stands full and the team buoyant. I would be extremely surprised if the players had heard of him.
They have to be at least respectful of the manger if not in awe.

To say I am worried is an understatement.
I wasn't keen on Appleton either for all the same reasons but when a man changes his mind based on his sacking payment(if that is indeed true) then that for me is a reason to not employ him.

I dearly hope that Im wrong but fans are not known for patience and I figure he will not get anywhere near the time to settle that Stubbs would have.

worried.

Of course the players will have heard of him. What does it matter anyway if you or anyone else hasn’t heard of him? I’ve got every confidence the board have chosen who they think is the best person for the job and as supporters, we all need to get behind him and the team.

I agree with this . There is a lot of good people around the club. This appointment will have been well researched and assessed. For him to get the role it is because he has shined around the ethos and criteria they were looking for. Reminds me a bit of the Mowbray appointment - if he gets anywhere near that performance level , then we will be well happy

Another club offered money for him which we turned down and had to sack him a couple months later. Petrie's worst decision.

But the consensus on here at the time was to back Petrie's decision IIRC

Perhaps. It's certainly a risky appointment, given his mixed managerial record, lack of knowledge of the Scottish game, and being out of a job for so long. We've no idea what criteria Hibs set for the appointment. It could just as easily be that all the "established" names were a lot more demanding in transfer funds, personal terms etc, which Hibs baulked at. Who knows.

I think a masters degree shows a level of commitment and intelligence to complete that course which IMO many other coaches would struggle to complete. No way IMO can it be seen as anything other than a positive. It also provides a much higher level of understanding in the field he is working in.

Just home from my travels and haven’t quite had finger on the pulse on who was going to be appointed.
Appleton was a shoe in last time I checked.

Anyhow, welcome Paul and Robbie.

As with all new managerial appointments, Paul has the “potential” to become the greatest manager Easter Road has ever seen. Dare I hope this to be the case? It will happen one day.

Calderwood also took a leap .

This guy was long-term unemployed, kicked out of his last job and there were few signs of clubs knocking his door down with offers. Fact is we've no clue how this guy will do at Hibs. Those thinking he'll bomb are just as right as those who are convinced he'll do well at this stage. We have a decent squad of players at ER, so we'll find out before the end of the season if he's up to the job, unlike most others before him who have had a rebuilding job to do. Really hope he does well, but he's got little time to prove himself.

Yes I agree. PH and RS both being out of work and with fairly limited Managerial experience under their belts, are unlikely to have been as demanding as other more established candidates. This looks very much like a budget driven appointment, rather than PH being the outstanding candidate for the job. Can't get enthusiastic and not confident of success, but time will tell. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong.

After the last few months, I'd suggest there's a major rebuild required. The team at the moment is in the garage. The Fiat 500 needs to be returned to an Audi A3 Sports.:greengrin

He is unknown to many; certainly not a safe bet as someone guaranteed to excite the support, as, for example, Lennon was. Heckingbottom is more of a gamble, though that doesn't mean he's a bad appointment. Only time will tell.

I have been watching hibs since the Tornados. I remain underwhelmed by this appointment and disappointed with the whole Lennon situation. For example we have a home tie against celtic coming up. Last time they came to ER we beat them well, next game at Celtic Park, toothless with not one shot on target. Newbees like me can recall long periods when we took nothing and almost expected nothing from games against Celtic. I would hate to see a return to that.
I will get behind Heckinbottom and the team, but I reserve the right to be underwhelmed

I was at the previous game at Celtc park. We played 3 at the back, one of which was Louie, brought Darren back in & left Porteous out. We tore up our game plan after 25 minutes, Lennon ripped Milligan a new one in public & we lost 4-2, going on 10 -2
I would hate to see us return to that.

Talking of whom, Heckingbottom already has as many winner's medals in Scotland as he does.

I've got my usual cautious optimism for our new manager but reckon I won't have a proper opinion until about September which will be long enough for him to have evaluated the existing squad, made his preferred changes in the transfer window, had the summer to work with the revised squad and several games to settle everything in.

He's been out of a job since June, it's hardly like we've plucked him from obscurity. Adam Hammill - someone who actually knows Heckingbottom - says he's turned down a number of jobs in England during that time.

Not something you've levelled necessarily but I find it bizarre that people look at a manager and his assistant who were last in charge at Leeds and Sunderland respectively and think this is somehow the cheap option! Bonkers.

Lots of people in Scotland won't have heard of him. Says more about their knowledge of football than it does about Heckingbottom.

I couldn't tell you either. A German guy I think.

Quite different than asking if you've heard of a name who managed a Championship club for 2 years and was appointed Leeds boss.

It's the Sportsound mentality IMO. People that probably consider Tommy Wright a more "established" candidate. And think any talk of Heckngbottom being a good fit must be cos he's a yes man and cheap.

I'm sure I'm generalising here but it's quite tiresome to see some of the predictable negativity.

Another intelligent post, keep it up.

Welcome to the club gaffer

Stayed mostly quiet since NL departed. My believe is that LD is a very good CEO and wouldn't have moved on NL for no reason and i had full confidence in her to take her time, do her due diligence and find the right guy to take the club forward

She reckons that's PH. from his interview he spoke very well, i like his ideas so hopefully he can put them in to practice.

I genuinely believe we've got a decent, if somewhat unbalanced squad. The next 3 games are massive and shape our season tbh

Roll on Saturday

Heckingbottom's Green and White army works until we come up with something new. Split syllables as "Hecking-bottom's green and white army", could also be Paul and Robbie's Green and White army

Apologies if it's been posted already but it's seems that Hecks was the only man offered the job according to Dempster.

Just read it, and more than happy with it. Glad that she has had her say and put a few points to right.

No doubt there will be a few questioning what she said, but it's kinda what i've come to expect on here now.

Yes! I know it's an HYS forum, that's the reason that I expect it.

She isn't lying. Appleton never got as far as the offer because they couldn't see eye to eye on terms.

Both guys got to the stage of the process where hibs ask what they'd be looking for in a contract and hibs could only find a happy arrangement with Hecky.

At this stage, since he hasn't started yet, and I never watched a Leeds game with him in charge, I have no opinion of him.

Is it OK to say that? In these days of entrenched opinions online where noone ever changes their mind or has shades of grey instead of black and white I kind of feel like have to apologise for just not having an opinion :faf:

Good luck to him and the smoggy dude from the Sunderland documentary. See, I've done my homework:aok:

You try to use an assertive tone when you don't agree yet act like a little bairn when your offended, you try to much.

People said that after the hearts game on may 9th when Lennon let rip into the players and said maybe he can't take the club any further forward, that's when he should have left and that's when he lost the dressing room. People to this day still stay that's when he should have left so it not "downright lies".

And given how it's went this season it looks like those people were right eh?

No that’s no allowed. You either have to already know he’s going to be a disaster or know he’s going to win us the cup this year and the league next year. There can be no in between!!

Thought our new boss came over really well in that pre-match interview...clear strategy and plans, good communication, talks well on developing players and working to understand our league. You Can see why he would have stood out in an interview process.

My thoughts too. Seems a far more natural fit the way he talks about structure and if he can get the team playing the style he is trying to achieve, high pressing fast attacking football, then he will be a success. The game against Celtic this year where we played that style was a one off but we were brilliant. The current squad appears capable of doing it and hopefully the new boss can get them doing it every week rather than once in a while.

Saying all the right things at the start will give him some leeway before results and performances are held against him.

But ultimately he'll be judged on those results and performances so fingers crossed here as well.

Perhaps . He was also rite when he said we have second rate players that others don't want. The reality is that is the situation we are in, we will always assemble a sqaud of players that aren't equipped for the next level apart from a few, that's why they are playing the in spfl. This season always proves that point.

We just about have enough to scrape a team together to play that way, but it will have other deficiencies elsewhere.

What do we mean by next level? Regular top 4 finishes and cup and Europe runs ?

In our league Teams like St Johnstone, ICT, Hearts (in recent times) , Aberdeen. Have all had consistent years in the top 6 and most have had regular European qualification..most have a similar wage scale to us (some less, some a little more) ...it’s about recruitment being done well, avoiding key injuries and getting consistency and performance from your squad.

Issues with those latter elements have been the main cause of this seasons performance. Second rate perhaps compared with top quality , but we only need good players , rather than great players, to compete well in this league .

We’ve got enough about us to compete well - as we showed in recent seasons (and at times this season too) - if we get back on our game, no reason why we can’t be competing towards the top end of the league and Hampden appearances
