Indian restaurants in Edinburgh

Guys,

Not living in Edina any more my finger is not on the pulse of favourite Indian restaurants.

My mate is in town for the weekend and is looking for recommendations.

He’s staying central so nothing too far out of the centre.

Any suggestions?

I love the Guru Balti which is accross from the main complex at Fountainpark. If you are up that way give it a go. You won't be disappointed.

JClay oven at Morningside used to be my favourite when I lived up that way.

These days it's the queens spice at south queensferry, which is ace but not very handy for you I'm afraid.

Mother India is really good. As is Navadhanya.

I’ve recently started using The Everest for my delivered Indians, and it’s really good. Not sure if it’s got a restaurant.

I'll second that. We travel from Leith on a regular basis. We would travel further if we had to!

Tell Icky I was asking for him!

101% recommendation for the Guru.

Been going for over ten years and always massive portions, warm welcome and great value. The naan are the size of a small village.

Kushis at top of leith walk

Closed some weeks ago.

The Indian restaurant that's there now, Kuma???????, looks similar but it's different folk running it.

We use it regularly, BYOB is okay but I preferred when they had a licence.

That sounds very similar to the mosque kitchen situation. Hopefully the new one is as good, or the departing brother opens a new kushis.

Mother India would get my vote. :aok:

+1 for the Guru. Also worth checking out, despite towards on the wrong side of town is Kebbabish in Dalry Road. Haven't been for years but the Kalpana at St Patrick's Square was great for veggie stuff

Omar Kayam is always consistently very good.

Anyone tried Rustom across the road gets excellent reviews?

Mother India and Guru were both excellent whenever I’ve been.

Mother India in particular might be a touch busy at the weekend though.

Kalpna is another really nice place, the service is always good and being vegetarian it is a little bit lighter while still being tasty. Given the sheer volume of vegetarians in India it’s no surprise they have some good dishes.

I used to stay in Morningside too and would endorse the Clay Oven and the Morningside Spice, which are pretty nearly next door to each other, in line with the Dominion cinema. It’s a bit further out of town but there were a couple of decent pubs in the area when I was there and it’s not a ridiculous taxi from the city centre.

Meant to also add Khukuri at West Maitland Street which is Nepalese. That was a firm favourite for a long, long time though my opportunities to revisit are limited - hopefully it is still as good, and now I’ve remembered it I’m going to have to try and get back into Edinburgh to check it out :greengrin

There's a reasonably new Indian takeaway opened on Slateford Road (Shandon Spice), vastly superior to anything nearby.

Original kebabish on Dalry road is good. The mixed grill is unbelievable.

I’m a fan of Kismot on the Pleasance. Well known for their spicy offerings but I have it on good authority that their mild offerings are also excellent.

Did someone get hospitalised after one of their spicy curry challenges, or is that a myth?

Dishoom is good but different from traditional Indians.

I think it's meant to be more specifically Bombay (?) than Indian. Agree it's good though. :agree:

Yes remember reading about it at the time.

I remember reading somewhere that the meals are cooked at another location, frozen, then reheated. That’s not very good.

I might just be getting mixed up or imagining that though.

My favourite dishes have changed as I have got older or maybe wiser 😁
In my twenties it was Phaal or Vindaloos and copious amounts of lager. Now I prefer to appreciate the flavours of milder dishes and love a tandoori mixed grill. Keema naan everytime though.

A regular large group of us go to the Guru but for nearer to home I can’t see past the Eastern Pavilion in Corstorphine.

Yes, two people required hospital treatment, one of whom went twice.

This followed the restaurant's annual hot curry competition. A disclaimer had to be signed and there were medical staff at hand too.

The incident reached the national press but I believe is no longer held.

I used to love a good Indian but, maybe because of the spices, it always made me go a bit raj.

Eastern Pav very good. Also Spice Lounge Kitchen is good and very comfy. Fine pint of Guinness too!

On infirmary Street? Top notch, really good. Tapas style Indian is a great combo. 2 dishes each, 1 rice and 1 naan. Job's a good one.

Really good.

I tend to judge Indians by their fish pakora as it's really hard to get right. Mother India's is spot on as is the rest of their menu.
