Orkney has taken the top spot in an annual survey ranking the best place to live in the UK. I've only spent one week in the summer in Orkney when I was a teenager, apart from a brief work trip to Kirkwall. You wouldn't go there for the weather, but I would agree it's a great place to visit though not sure if I would want to live there.

Skara Brae is an amazing place, as is the Italian Chapel, Churchill Barriers etc. Great tourist attractions.

Beautiful place when the weather is nice, grim when it's not (which is a lot of the time). They have good facilities - modern schools in Kirkwall with good sports and leisure facilities.

It’s beautiful (in the right weather) but I’m ****** if I’d want to live there.

Been there for shopping week over a decade ago and was really good! I don’t actually recall the midgies myself but the wee bastarts get me wherever I go anyway!

I even had a shot of the ‘greasy pole’ (no.. not that) which not even sure exists any more.

I think Kirkwall used to have a fairly big drug problem but not sure what the state is nowadays. Is only really stromness I recall being in.

Was down at the harbour and watched the greasy pole contestants (think it was attatched to a fork lift) was quite funny, although the water looked manky 😆

I don't think I've been to a bad place whenever I've went north/northwest for a break/walking before, but it wouldn't be my preference for a place to live I don't think.

I'm maybe biased but I think I'd struggle to find somewhere I'd rather live than Edinburgh - could do with it being a bit warmer right enough!

I can see why. I spent a lot of time up there in the early nineties. Fantastic islands populated by brilliant people.

I've always thought I'd quite like to live somewhere remote as I love the outdoors and always feel calmer and happier away from the hustle and bustle of a city.

By contrast my girlfriend was brought up in a rural village with a population of less than 100 and thinks I'm mad. She says the practicalities are far more demanding than my idyllic view based on a few holidays. She couldn't wait to leave and, whilst she misses her parents, she has absolutely no desire to return either.

I agree with her - village life is difficult. especially when you are young. I love home but I love Manchester, I'm just outside the city and have a choice of 2 tram lines a 10 min walk from the house. it's quiet and there's nice countryside a 20 min drive away.

everything I need is close and my quality of life is so much better. honestly for someone that wasn't sold on moving but took the plunge, I'm the happiest I've been for years. 2 years have flown in and both our careers are thriving.

I miss home at times, namely my family but I come home when I can and both my side and my partners visit regularly. I miss hibs but right now that's not a huge issue, and I watch man utd with a season ticket and pick up games for the other teams around including Salford city, altrincham etc so I still get live football.

city life has its issues but I'd say the balance is just on the fringes. I couldn't live city centre.
