View Full Version : Favourite Hibs Transfer Rumour

Was thinking about the various rumours that fly about in the transfer windows. There’s been some crackers over the years. My favourite one was when we weee linked with Joel Cantona and the headline on the back of the paper was “Hibs Go For Kid Cantona”

The David Platt one is up there too. Not sure how close we were to singing him.

I’m not one to blow my own trumpet but I put a lot of work into that one - phoned talk107 and everything. Had a bit of help from a mate who sent texts in etc.

Highlight was my father in law phoning to tell me it was happening after reading it in the paper and his mate (who had a good source) telling him.

Was very close to happening apparently.....

From a newspaper interview

" In fact, Christie once thought he had succeeded in winning his place among the premier team leaders back in 1987. He was touted for the job as Hibs manager and made it to the short list. He was interviewed by the chairman, Kenny Waugh, and ''I came out believing I was Hibs manager, but two days later I picked up the morning paper to discover that Alex Miller had got the job.''

Know Terry well as he was a contemporary of my dad's

He was also my science teacher and had some wider school role that I cant recall as well

He took the school team at Porty where I was "lucky" enough to warm the bench while Robbo & David Bowman and a right few good other players played in that team.

Used to see him and the Meadowbank players of the time drinking in Olivers in Rose Street, but that would be nearly 40 years ago :-)

After retiring from teaching he was the GM (or whatever the title was) at Duddingston)

Still see him around occasionally at Braids Driving Range

As others have stated he was sure he had got the job and as boy raised in Craigentinny that would have meant the world to him

Jeez, where did the time go?!

I was a few years ahead, age rather than substance :greengrin but I knew quite a few who were in and around that team. Phil Sinclair was the gym teacher who ran the football and he was another good guy.

Last time I seen Mr Christie was when a few of us shouted something to him at Meadowbank - he recognised us and gave us bit of banter back. Just been reminded that he was headmaster at dear old Porty, if correct that would be after my time but he was a decent guy and it wouldn't surprise me.

Was available for £50k, had a trial with Hibs and scored a hat trick in a closed doors game, it alerted Liverpool and that was that...

Did he not miss an absolute bowler of an open goal for Liverpool? Sure it was well publicised at the time. That’s my abiding memory of him although I might be wrong.

Although not a Hibs transfer rumour, it deserves a mention. Ronaldinho to St Mirren.........AND IT WAS TRUE!! :not worth

Another good one was Mcleish nearly signing Messi on loan for Rangers (rip)
Also read that Mahrez was at St Mirren but left on a bike as it was too cold. Got to love football at times 😂😂😂

Brehme?

I was told he was the new manager about 10 minutes before Mowbray was unveiled. About as close to being ITK as I ever got.

I bumped into Bobby Robson in a hotel a couple of years after that. What a lovely guy! He was kind enough to spend an hour or so chatting football with us. It was amazing the players that he had signed - Ronaldo, Romario and Van Nistelroy to name but three...

He shared that he had ACTUALLY been approached about the Hearts job. Met Phil Anderton (sp?) at the time and liked him, also met Romanov , who he was less impressed with , but was originally open to the idea...he then decided that he didn't want to come to Scotland to manage and therefore rejected the deal...we let him know his lucky escape of the madness of that circus..he had already noted the same. I have to say, great guy..was quite inspiring when you heard him chat about football.

I remember that too, I was told they met in Harrys Bar at the West End to discuss it.

Who knows? :dunno:

Who remembers when Rangers parades Brazilian Jardel about Ibrox but they didn’t actually signed him? He turned up with his missus who was in the opposite scale from Michael Mols wife, shall we say?

She left such an impression I’m sure there was a Rangers supports branch called The Karen Jardel Supporters Club!
