Never understood the point of them.

Getting an award for service to films,sport...etc etc.

You generally work harder in your life for alot less money than these celebrities for 50+ years....and dont get any recognition for it.
Youll be lucky if you get a bloody pension that actually supports you.

I agree, total farce really. Plenty of people who serve our community are much more deserving of recognition.

These awards should be consigned to the scrapheap of history, as should those who bestow them.

Couldn't agree more. Though there are a few posters on here who could get a gong for services to moaning.

Utter nonsense. The only person worthy of the title is Sir David Gray anyway. And he already is a Sir.

Been recognised by someone who is only in that position because of her dad seems very strange!

I think Craig and Charlie said it best

But in saying that..... I would love Sir David to become a real sir

Time to organise a mass nomination campaign

John Redwood and Gareth Southgate MW? Sorry but absolute nonsense. The whole system should be scrapped as should the House of Lords.
PS Thanks for responding with respect MW. Too much aggression on the board of late but I think you acknowledged my post (a stolen quote from someone more witty than me) was a wee bit tongue in cheek as a few people I respect have been recognised in the past. Got to disagree with you but with added respect.👍

Paddy Power has nailed it again.

“England manager Gareth Southgate has been awarded an OBE.

He gets the honour for services to beating a load of ***** teams at the World Cup, and then getting knocked out by the first decent one you face.”

Shocking really!

He could have been offered one, and turned it down. It may be that no one has put him forward for consideration, anyone can.

I don't really agree or disagree with these awards but that is why they are awarded. He brought a country together and got them believing.

BBC website has a decent list of some of those who turned down an 'honour.'
John Redmond getting anything says everything about the insidious patronage behind it all.

The average punter doesn't entertain and bring joy to millions.

And neither do the main recipients that get these awards
Its mostly 1st division senior civil servants.
Those high up in the diplomatic service.

Captains of industry who are by nature Conservative and are members of the "right" club and not so secret societies.

These are the guys that get the knighthoods and seats in the upper chamber.

The revolutionary Frenchman,Robespierre, would have had none of this nonsense .

Off with their heads, mon ami !!

The whole thing is a joke and a symbol of the disfunction in this country.

Our economy is heading for the toilet but don't worry about that, the Royal Family and Government are dishing out titles to loads of other really rich people.

Well when we’re a socialist country under Corbyn you can all get you way and bring the whole system crashing down.

That’ll teach them.

I know someone well who received an honour a fre years ago and he was delighted with it. When he set out all those years ago it wasn’t his aim in life to get one but when he did his family were extremely proud of him getting it.

I don't know what I'm more surprised by - M.I.A. being given an honour or the fact she accepted it.
