View Full Version : Gatwick Airport: Drone attack grounds flights

Madness - who would do such a thing? I'm sure they'll find out who did it pretty soon.

A drone attack at one of the UK's busiest airports has left tens of thousands of passengers facing major disruption. Gatwick's runway has been shut since Wednesday night, when two devices were seen flying over the perimeter fence. The airport said 110,000 passengers on 760 flights were due to fly on Thursday.

Police were still hunting for the drone operator after another device was reported just before 07:00 GMT. Sussex Police said it was not terror-related but a "deliberate act" of disruption.

Are there no police or army marksmen who need target practice?

Presumably, they are concerned about where the shot drone would land.

I'm thinking more an International Rescue-type operation with a large butterfly-net. :cb

It’s interesting as the military has been trying to develop counter drone measures for some time...shooting them down is rather difficult so a large net device seems to be an option!

There are ways to block the control signals to drones which makes me wonder why they are still flying at Gatwick.

Tech experts on the tv news suggested that they could be flying on a pre-programmed route. This is apparently a feature of some more modern drones. No longer just a man with a controller in the vicinity, but can be operated from up to 100 miles.

What group would want to ground a whole airport for a day+

Boy who just bought a house near by? [emoji848][emoji33]

Pretty shambolic its carried on for so long though

Shows a huge weakness in our security too - armed police kicking about the airport terminal ready to shoot in an instant with massive potential of collateral damage but we cant get some snipers to shoot down a hunk of plastic?

How are they recharging too? Why arnt they being followed to home base and why are there very few pics or vids of them flying about?

Something odd in this story

You’ve got to remember that drones are both small and far away.

The tv news had footage yesterday and it was repeated today. Not brilliant, but a moving object a couple of feet in diameter is always going to be tricky to film from a couple of hundred yards.

Its only far away if your not near it [emoji23]

I believe they/it were programmed to run a pre determined route - i cant believe that no one was positioned close enough to get some decent footage

Not with all the news outlets covering it for the past 3 days- live coverage on the guardian etc

Seems at odds to me

I also dont get why the helicopter wasnt better used.

I fly microlights and we have to give a wide berth to helis because of the huge downwash they create - can cause an upset big enough for you to lose control of your aircraft

If they can do that to a 450kg aircraft - what would they do to a 20kg drone?

I think theres a piece of of this story missing

Some drones can be operated from over 4 miles away.

Some drones can be programmed to fly a predetermined course and are not remote controlled. One person could be activating them in one location and another picking them up miles away making it impossible to hack them and very difficult to follow and find them. Even if they do manage to follow them, the person planned to recover them could just ignore them and deny any knowledge of them. You'd have to catch the person activating them and they could be literally miles away from the airport in any direction.

Pete
21-12-2018, 05:27 PM

You’d think they’d have to be certain to suspend flights.

Here’s an idea. The minute they see a drone, why don’t really fast police drones follow the original one as presumably it will fly back to its owner at some point? That will smoke him (or her) out.

However, listened to an interesting discussion yesterday on just that subject yesterday. The argument is that civil disobedience can sometimes be justified. The suffragettes, the poll tax demonstrations, the yellow vests in France, industrial action have all been seen to arrive at the greater good by inconveniencing a relatively small number of people.

The piece went on to suggest that climate change protesters, if that's what they are, may be lauded in the 22nd Century as the Emily Pankhursts of their day.

They’ve not long since announced that they have passed the remains of a crashed drone for forensic analysis.

This has Roswell all over it.

The latest update from Sussex Police is that there’s no footage of a drone.

So what were the various tv news channels showing?

The truth is out there. Or on here, or somewhere.

Maybe

Conan Doyle predicted this over 100 years ago. The curious incident of the drone at the airport. What was curious about it? There was no drone.

I don’t even know what “miscommunicated” means.

I’ll just have to wait until the movie comes out. Netflix or Amazon Prime, probably 😄

Farcical from the police and about as believable as their flat denial that the arrested couples names came from them or indeed that the arrest was fully warranted.

That couple have had their lives turned upside down for no reason what so ever and no amount of restitution will fix that (not that the police are looking to apologise anyway).

I'm not suggesting you're wrong, but I don't understand.

What was farcical?

And who did the names come from allegedly?

It's the press that should apologise, by the way.

Their inability to control this situation from the start, their ‘miscommunication’ and the clear lack of control when it comes to keeping persons of interest names under wraps.

The press will report what they are told and it certainly didn’t take long for the identities of the two to be outed...which of course was nothing whatsoever to do with the police, no siree they would never do a thing like that.

Can you blame the police for Gatwick not investing in anti-drone technology?

I don't know why the police would leak the suspects' names unless it was an individual who was paid which is possible.

I would have thought that it was more likely to have been the same people who grassed them to the police in the first place.

Fair enough...I’m sure we all have better things to do today rather than quibble over my thoughts on how poor the police’s part in this fiasco has been [emoji108][emoji106][emoji2532]

The police parking about 8 vehicles outside the house and the house then being shown on tv wasn't the best move, folk would recognise it and the names followed soon after, there was no need for the large police presence and how did the media get there so quick, Cliff Richard replica, hope the couple sue the ass of everyone.

A Gatwick chief told BBC Panorama the drone's pilot "seemed to be able to see what was happening on the runway".

In his first interview since the incident, Gatwick's chief operating officer, Chris Woodroofe, told Panorama: "It was clear that the drone operators had a link into what was going on at the airport."

Mr Woodroofe, who was the executive overseeing the airport's response to the attack - the "gold commander" - also said that whoever was piloting the drone could either see what was happening on the runway, or was following the airport's actions by eavesdropping on radio or internet communications
