I know there are some from down that way so I'm asking for some advice.

We are not party animals and have booked a hotel near the Mersey which has a new year's eve event with dinner, band and fireworks, but I am looking for things to do on the 1st and 2nd of January. Tate Liverpool is open, I believe, but other places to visit that are open would be handy, art, culture, music and other ideas much appreciated.

Merseyside Maritime Museum & Museum of Liverpool both close to where you are staying and well worth a visit.

The Beatles experience at the Albert Dock again very close to your hotel

The open top tour bus is well worth it

Take the Ferry across the Mersey

The Liverpool FC stadium tour needs to be pre boiked

Cheers for that Scouse.

Bus tour is something I like to do to get a feel for a place. I also see there are some light shows in the centre of the city for night time and if the RIBA building is open there's the Stirling Prize exhibition to see. Also looking to go to the Bluecoat and FACT for some contemporary art.
