I understand why, but I've never heard them called that before.

This is similar to the one I was thinking about the other day. When did The Nou Camp become The Camp Nou

When people realised it was actually Spanish, and the adjective comes after the noun

To answer the OP , I remember the team formerly known as Glasgow Rangers playing CSKA possibly in the late 90's and some pundits referring to SisKa back then.

About the same time that Aidjax became Ayax.

Ahem..... Catalan for new field which was the imaginative name they gave their new pitch when they moved there.

I have only known it as Nou Camp until it changes one day :greengrin

Oh and I have always said Ayax!

I think, for people of a certain age in this country, the pronunciation of the team from Amsterdam was influenced by a well known cleaning product!
For younger viewers... There used to be a well known kitchen/bathroom cleaning product in the UK called Ajax (Ai-Jax).
I'm fairly sure this is why commentators called the Amsterdam club Eye-ax...... Despite the fact any Dutchman I've heard pronounces it Ai-Jax 🤔

Also noticeable that AEK Athens are now "...ike" rather than "...ay-ee-kay"

I thought they were always ike?

Anyway, what harm does it do if more people know exactly what you mean?

Meelan, Serie Aaah, Seveeyah, Reeyaal, Hoo-vay... I even have a hipster mate recently talk about Serie Che instead of C. The ****.

Seen a lot about ‘Glasgow Rangers’ but remember having an email exchange with the guy who ran the local ‘ Glasgow Rangers’ supporters site, in 2000, asking how he could get the name wrong as the club were (even then); officially known as ‘The Rangers’

Got a well thought out reply along the lines of.’..well, technically you are right, but the Rangers play in Glasgow,so........’

I'm (reasonably) sure that the name they had printed on their match tickets was Glasgow rangers football club plc....
Wrongly naming clubs is very common all over Europe though. In the UK we regularly say Inter Milan, Sporting Lisbon, AC Milan, Athletico Bilbao etc etc

Whilst pre match at Old Trafford visiting European teams players often refer to the challenge Manchester will pose!

I still think Hibs are way cooler when called "Eebz" in the style of Franck Sauzee.

And why?

Why do we say/spell Seville when the locals spell Sevilla/say Sebija(ish)? I know I come from Edinburgh and they insist its Edimbourg. Somethings lost in translation I think

The first time I heard them called “ike” (more like “ah-ek” really) was from a Greek AEK fan shortly after we played them.

Also, should it not be Bavaria Munich, or Bayern Munchen?

Why do we only translate half their name?!

Bristolhibby
13-12-2018, 06:22 AM
So we are all going to start using Munchen instead of Munich, Paree instead of Paris, Hrvatska instead of Croatia, Oporto instead of Porto.

I get that we are trying to use the local words, but why only some?
