Even taking this to court is a waste of time and money in my opinion, but surely a warning, or at most a fine, would have sufficed?
Or am I being a snowflake and she deserved everything she got?

The judge nails it with "nothing other than smart alec behaviour" - he gets to that conclusion and a 4 month sentence I'm not too sure.
What a waste of time for so many people. I don't understand how noone in the whole process stopped and thought "what a waste of time this is".
Although she should have said "once I pop, you can't stop me"

Cleary there's more to this story.
The young woman was barred/banned from entering the store due to previous infractions, even the judge said opening the crisps to force purchase was "smart Alec" behaviour.
Although only 24, she had 16 previous convictions, including 2 for criminal damage.
Previous suspended sentences had no effect.
Her defence said she was now a reformed character and working at a local hairdresser, the judge clearly being sceptical stood the trial to allow the Gardaí to investigate this. Turns out she wasn't working at any salon.
Judge sentenced her to 4 months with 2 months suspended.
as they say around these parts,,,,TELT!

Reading all that she probably deserves it just as a point of principal.

Sounds good to me. How many warnings should she get before going to jail? Sounds like she's had a few over the years. On ye go lass, don't pass go, don't collect £200.

My sympathy meter didn't even twitch.Mine did twitch a little. Then quickly settled back down as I read the article... A bit like when I watch those videos of the moped theives recently, mind you, with that I ended up laughing at them :-)

I'm all for 2nd, 3rd, 4th..... chances but there comes a point when enough is enough. Multiple previous convictions , lying in her plea in mitigation and failed to respond positively to various other sentencing options.
Harsh maybe but I have no real sympathy.

Will the crisps be able to claim compensation for the damage?

Is anyone else smiling at the thought of the judge saying "smart Alec behaviour" with a Cork accent?

I've no sympathy for the idiot who was clearly being a pest, but jail's aren't there for such minor things like that.
I'm not even sure she committed a real crime given that she was going to pay for the crisps.
2 months, (possibly only 1 if she behaves), at tax payers' expense because she irritated a couple of store security guys. What a waste of money.
If everyone got banged up for "smart Alec behaviour" ...

The woman's a liar and a time-waster and well deserves a spell in chokey.

She wasn't going to to pay for the crisps. She had no permission to be in the store so purchasing anything is already out of her hands.
Pringles aren't a difficult product to find, there must have been other stores that she could have gone to.
Then to top it off there seems to be a lie to the court about having a job.
Smacks of someone who won't grow up and won't learn.
If I were a judge I wouldn't waste time giving a community order to such a character. She can't adhere to simple things like staying out of shops she is barred from so why would I expect her to comply with an order?
Jail time well earned. They're not exactly throwing away the key either. Perhaps she might now realise how serious things have gotten.

But it wasn't just for that. There's a string of things that show she's unwilling to be part of society, so she's been removed from it hoping it will make her think about her future behaviour.

It says here she had joined the self scan queue to pay for the crisps.

I get that, but going into a shop you're banned from isn't a criminal offence
Is it?

Maybe not, but damaging merchandise that you're unable to buy probably is.

That's what they prosecuted her for, criminal damage to a €1.50 packet of crisps because they couldn't recoup the cash because the goods were open.
Even though the lassie had the money in her hand and was offering it to them. It's a nonsense.
She's getting the jail cos she's a pest, nothing else, and I don't think that's what the criminal justice system and prisons are there for.
A fine would have been more than enough, imo. If she didn't pay it, then they'd have more reason to incarcerate her although filling our jails with poor folk who can't pay fines isn't a great system either, but that's for another thread.
Anyway, I'll be surprised if she doesn't win on appeal.

You could be right, but given that she apparently has numerous convictions for theft and criminal damage, maybe she's a wee bit more a pest?

No sympathy from me. Maybe I'm becoming the old man I actually chronologically am, but it seems to me there's a growing underclass with a huge sense of entitlement. Basically thinking they can do wtf they like, and wtf are you going to do about it? Banned from the store, she was bent on showing them they wouldn't get away with doing that to her. It's turned around and bit her on the ass. Lesson learned? I seriously doubt it
