I used to drive their delivery vans when I was still at school - taking sliced loaves to the ships in Leith, iced buns and rolls out to the depot in Musselburgh, trifles to the Edinburgh shops and hotels, etc. I've no sense of direction so I was forever getting lost. I'd have to climb out of my van (with the big Scott Lyon name painted on it) and ask folk where the bakery was. Some of the double-takes I got...!

No mate, Greggs Bran scones are sold as individual scones, not as a large round which can be cut in to four.
Love a Bran Scone.

When I was a baker I used to make loads of bran scones. I really urge people to have a go at making them yourselves. It’s one of those recipes and methods that you can’t really go wrong with. Chuck all the ingredients together, give it mix and you’re good to go.

I’ve not got an exact recipe as it was a long time ago, but it’s really simple.
white flour
baking powder
bran
sugar
salt
vegtable oil or butter
water
if you can’t get bran just do half white flour and half whole meal flour.
mix it all together in a bowl then separate it out into 1lb pieces. Roll it up into a ball and let it rest for five minutes. Roll it flat with a rolling pin to around half an inch and lightly score it into four sections. Use your knife to make lots of little holes in the top before baking.

Can’t believe Storries in Leith Walk hasn’t been mentioned yet - opposite the Harp & Castle (pretty much).
As good a bran scone as you’ll find anywhere AND baked fresh daily. :top marks:thumbsup:

I made my first round of bran scone tonight, pretty good.
The wife is a bit miffed that it was decent for a 1st attempt 😁😁
Struggled to get bran from a supermarket, but now have enough to give the population of Scotland a scone each.
950g bag from Holland and Barrett for £1.25

Just had a pie, and half of it chucked in the bin. Greasy and under seasoned. I usually like the pies from there, so not sure if there are different bakers.
