Great stuff. If ever anyone is down in Bristol, the city is full of Banksy.

Something is worth what someone will pay for it of course, but stuff like this, and the art world in general, just comes across as pretentious IMO. £1m for a painting is obscene, but for it then to be half destroyed and worth more as a result is ridiculous.

That said it’s probably just a PR stunt.

Brilliant, a massive attack on a red herring.

It does seem like a big publicity stunt, surely the auctioneer was in on it? Entertaining nonetheless

Banksy posted a video (hastily deleted) that implies he planned it some years ago meaning the auctioneer couldn't have been.

Imagine being the person who bought it 😅

Wonderful display. The painting as it is will be worth more in future in it's shredded form. Maybe the owner and current buyers were in on it.

Reminds me of one of my favourite books, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.

Giruy Mr. Moneybags.

Pretty much. His work is mostly about the stunt.

It is also a comment on the use of celebrity to enhance the value of art, instead of appreciating art for its intrinsic manner.

Consider the fact that the painting is worth even more now because it was shredded by the artist. Also the fact that it was worth a million in the first place because of who painted it.

To me, Banksy is calling out Philistines who see art as something that is based on monetary value, rather than what message or entertainment it sends to the viewer.

Was it designed to be social commentary upon the ridiculous prices attached to some throwaway pieces in the art world? Ironic, then, that it may have increased in value!

I've never really got the whole Banksy infatuation.

Le Rat, Robbo, Dondi, Gnasher and Remi Rough to name a few are less well known but far more interesting imo. A lot of Banksys stuff is 'inspired' by Le Rat in particular.

I've never heard of them. I've heard of Banksy. Is it something to do with self promition?
