View Full Version : Best non Hibs player you’ve seen at ER.

So following on from the Gazza hall of fame thread it got me thinking who are the best players to have played against us at ER?

More specifically I’m thinking of players that didn’t play in Scotland but played against us in Europe otherwise it will be a list of Old Firm players.

Only mega star I can think of off the top of my head would be Dino Zoff maybe?

Sir David Gray

Maybe not for his performance in the game against us but in terms of what he's gone on to achieve in the game, Wayne Rooney was alright.

Messi, if you hadn't stipulated ER. As well as the rest of that Barca team from the game at Murrayfield.

I assume the Liverpool team that came up around the time they were winning their European trophies would have had some decent players too - not sure who though.

Josip Iličić & Marco Tavares who both played for Maribor against us in 2010. Both of them were simply terrific and it’s no surprise that Iličić has gone on to make a name for himself in Serie A

There was a debate about him on here a while back and I know many who saw that game were impressed.

Altafini was born in Argentina but took out Italian citizenship when he moved to Europe. He was in the Napoli team that beat us 4-1 in Italy but their manager was so confident of progressing he left Altafini in Italy and Hibs beat them 5-0 in the second leg. Played against us at ER for Juve in what was a tremendous game. Came on as a sub and they won 4-2. Probably the best visiting European team performance at ER that I've ever witnessed.

Altafini Juventus brought him on 2-1 down he was in his thirties had pace to burn electric

Napoli left him at home against us in 1967 they were that confident of hanging onto their 4-1 lead Juve did not make that mistake as he helped turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 win

👍🏻Absolutely the best individual performance I ever saw. Couldn’t believe it was the same player in Frankfurt, World Cup 1974, that was unlucky enough to miss a sitter v Brazil that would have won us the match and the group. Thought he could do no wrong after his display at ER. It was a long journey home after both those games.

Yep, though I think Dalglish had retired by this point and was manager, not player-manager like at Liverpool. Anyway, think we won 3-0 with Darren Jackson scoring at least one, and chants of “what a waste of money” aimed at Shearer! Might have been his Blackburn debut actually.

Best Performances

Domestic: McCloy in the 1973 Scottish cup replay.

Foreign: Włodzimierz Lubański in 1969 friendly against Gornick [Shades debut when he injured Peter Cormack!], Lubański was absolutely stunning that evening. The same player had put Rangers through the wringer a couple of weeks earlier in the cup winners cup, [Gornick won both legs 3-1]. The defeat was that comprehensive that Rangers sacked their then manager Dave White the following day.

The next time I saw the player was in a televised WC qualifier in June 1973, where he destroyed England in a majestic display, with Poland 1-0 up he dispossessing Bobby Moore and then slotted the ball past Peter Shilton to put Poland two up, seven minutes later Roy MacFarland put him out for two years, including following year's world cup finals in Germany, with a dangeriously high chalange, breaking his leg, he was never the same player after that.

Jan Tomaszewski heroric Wembley displays the coming October was poetic justice, as it saw England fail to qualify for the following summer's tournament.

Going back a bit Oct 74 but Pietro Anastasi and Jose Altafini could play a bit Altafini was Pele`s partner in the 62 World Cup winning side so he was no slouch we were thumped 8-2 on agg Juventus were rapid and clinical Hibs ducked and dived and made a game of it but they were a class side.

Dalglish and Gascoigne are by far the best 2 British players Ive seen.
I never understood Larson being at Celtic he just ooze`d class and could have played anywhere, Jimmy Johnstone he had a trick or 2,plus he had the heart of a lion ,and he was as tough as nails a game changer, week in week out they kicked lumps out of him and he still came back for more .

A Hibs player I wanted to see was Willie Hamilton but it wasnt to be ,I heard he was something special, the best we ever had some say, , Im sure theres a story when Pat Stanton went to Celtic, Jock Stein waxed lyrical about Willie Hamilton,it went along the lines of "you've no idea how good Willie Hamilton was,he was off the scale ."

Think you may mean Willie Hamilton and Jock Stein was correct he was very special, Altafini was an Argentine so dont think he ever partnered the one and only Pele, still a great player mind.

Im getting old mate memories no what it was I got Willie and Bobby mixed up bit Im sure Altafini was Brazilian looks like he changed nationality maybe what do you think

120 goals in 205 games for AC Milan is pretty tasty no matter what era he did it in.

I just checked Juve didnt even win it the year they thumped Hibs it went to Borussia,Mönchengladbach

Wasn't at Juventus so never saw Altafini. As many have stated. Bremner for Leeds. Biggest and most regular recent pain in the erchie is Jamie Mc Donald. The LC quarter at ER that ended Fenlons reign and many games v Falkirk, not least the SC Semi...

Think I'd say Dalglish. Even though he had practically retired when he made that guest appearance you could still see he was special.

Have to say I agree with the Larsson chat though. A wonderful player.
