Croatia Vodice/Split

Hi folks, fancy a family holiday to Croatia for perhaps next June, we are normally Majorca, Menorca, Italy or Turkey holibobbers, anyone been Croatia and can fire of any tips, do’s donts, places to visit/avoid etc

I really enjoyed split, even though the weather was brutal and I never seen it at its best. Theirs a couple national parks a few hours away if you rent a car. We made one and it was something else, the other looked even nicer though. Drink was cheap and food was pretty decent, mainly Mediterranean sea food, but their seemed to be a trend in some places to imitate over the water Italy's food quite poorly. I would love to go back during better, and definitely recommend it. Some of the islands just of split look really nice for day trips too.

Went to Zagreb on the way to Maribor, really enjoyed it, pretty much everything extremely affordable.

Would recommend Dubrovnik, especially the old town. Has some great restaurants and bars in the numerous streets of the old town.

A day trip to Mostar was also well worth doing.

+1 on Dubrovnik and Mostar, did both this summer. Went down to Kotor Bay in Montenegro as well, only a short trip from Dubrovnik.

Be aware that Dubrovnik is not cheap though, comparable to the Greek Islands in terms of eating out costs, beer etc. You can also visit Mostar from Split so that could be a good option.

A girl I work with is Hungarian and she goes on all of her holidays to Croatia.

She raves about the island of Brac, and the town of Supetar on the island.

It does sound a bit different to your average UK Spanish package holiday though.

I went in may, so wasn't the peak of summer but still should have been pleasant. I think I was just very unfortunate as the whole of Europe, bar the very south of Spain, was being hit by thunderstorms that week.

I think I was just very unfortunate as the whole of Europe, bar the very south of Spain, was being hit by thunderstorms that week.Suppose weather can be hit n miss, we were in Menorca last year and it peed down for pretty much the whole week, moreso where we were there was little or nothing to do. Italy in June was brilliant, wall to wall sunshine as was Turkey last week. Not overly fussed about weather being scorching but as long as we can get out and about, thats why we fancy Croatia and particularly its historical values.

Been to Dubrovnik a couple of times but stayed in Lapad, far cheaper than the old town and plenty of bars and restaurants. Watching the sunset at Lapad Bay is pretty spectacular.

Recommend a day visit to Cavtat, use local buses and if you are in the Dubrovnik area definitely organise a trip to Mostar and Kotor. Mostar is a 3 hour coach drive but worth it.

Old town in Dubrovnik is really expensive, almost £7 a pint in some parts and walking the walls has doubled in price since I went there first in 2014.

This time last year we were over in Rovinj for a week, lovely old town, well worth a visit, will definitely be back

I stayed in Cavtat, and got the ferry over to Dubrovnik a couple of times. Cavtat is really nice. In Dubrovnik, I’m not sure what they’re charging to walk the walls anymore, but it’s probably worth it, great experience.

Flew to Dubrovnik for a couple of nights but it was absolutely mobbed. It's pretty much just the old town/citadel and the fort on the heights above - which is indeed impressive, particularly to see the sunset in the evening.

We spent our middle weekend in Split, which I preferred, as it was more laid back just outside the centre with a bit more action in the narrow streets of the old town. Loads of history too and a bit more interesting if you're into wandering about.

After that we caught the ferry down to the island of Korcula for a few days (passing Brac where most 'young' folk tend to go to) which I would wholeheartedly recommend. We had accommodation in the town of Lumbarda at the south east end which was just so chilled, as well as having some small vineyards next to our digs where we spent a wonderfully 'relaxed' evening.

Ferry back to Dubrovnik for the last night but I certainly think you'd find just about anywhere in the country you'd enjoy.

Been to Brac Just a few months ago, visited Supetar. In fact Been to Croatia a few times now.

Love getting off the mainland. Stayed in a resort near Milna, a wee sleepy fishing village.
Watched the world cup final there with a great crowd!

Split and Dubrovnik are both lovely places, but my recommendation would be to go out to the islands. And take a day trip to either city / spend a night there en route back to the airport home.
Korcula island was stunning. Loved it.
While Mijet and it's national park is possibly the most beautiful place I've ever been to.

Croatians are a great laugh too, most can speak English now in the big towns. Ferries are unbelievably reliable and not expensive either.

Dig out "Francescos Mediterranean adventure" on the iplayer of you want to get a good idea of what costal Croatia is like.

The key to Dubrovnik is to be able to be there at night when the cruise ship passengers go back to the boats.
I stayed in the old town.
Days spent out tripping to the islands & beaches. Nights where fine inside the city walls.

For family packages Jet2 can't really be beaten.

Port9 apartments/hotel on Korcula was great. Supermarket across the road & good kids entertainment. Was right Next to Korcula town (€4 water taxi). & a day trip over to mijet was a highlight.
But as a few Have said, you'll enjoy wherever you end up!

If you're staying in the dubrovnik area I would definitely recommend Cavtat. It's a lovely little town that's quieter and cheaper than dubrovnik. You can easily get to Dubrovnik by bus or boat.

Outside the city walls, Lokrum Island is worth a visit for half a day. There's a chair lift with a museum at the top about the war. You can also do a day trip to Lopud Island which has a sand beach, a rarity in these parts. As has been mentioned, Mostar is beautiful. I stayed there overnight and pretty much had the bridge to myself when the tour groups left.

You can also do a day trip to Lopud Island which has a sand beach, a rarity in these parts.

Watched a thunder and lightning storm breeze in while drinking Reikja (sp?) with the locals at the beach bar!
