Just watching Newsnight on BBC2 and they are doing an article on Museums on the back of the new V & A opening in Dundee. What confused me was a comment made that museums appear to be the province of 'white middle class visitors' and that even though they are free to get into they could be made ( and I quote ) "more inclusive"

Am I missing something? … what more than making a place free to get into could make it "more inclusive" … for example the magnificent museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. There is no admission charge, no dress code, no colour bar, no class division of any kind, so what for it, or any other museum, is required to make it "more inclusive"?

The whole point of museums is to encourage enlightenment and education, to encourage people to engage with their culture and history …. are they suggesting that if someone is too disinterested, or lets face it too thick, to bother visiting a museum its the fault of the museum … FFS sometimes I despair :confused:

Agree, sometimes people have to take some responsibility for their own learning.

Also, schools visits surely open them up to all?

Edinburgh has some amazing free attractions. The National Museum, The Potrait Gallery, The Museum of Childhood, Gallery of Modern Art, The National Gallery, St Gile Cathedral, the Botanic Gardens, the bank museum at the Mound and that's just off the top of my head. Add to that a National Trust or Historic Scotland family pass can be had for under a tenner a month and there's culture available to all.

If people choose not to use it then that's their call imo. This smacks of the kind of do gooder people who are actually more dismissive of the capabilities of the 'working class' than supposed snobs. 'Oh they don't know any better' or 'they won't be able to take in that information' types.

It really pisses me off that comments like that are not challenged at the time. Make a comment about any other colour and there would be a ****storm.
