I’m keen to cut down my alcohol intake so I tried Brew Dog’s Nanny State beer and it’s OK.

Anyone else got recommendations for similar low alcohol beverages?

The San Miguel, Budvar and Heineken ones are decent enough. Some places do one called Bavaria (don’t even know if there’s an alcoholic version, if there is I’ve never tried it) which is howfin. They’re the only ones I’ve tried though, they’re not something I really ever drink, if I’m not drinking I’ll generally just stick to water or juice.

Erdinger is a Bavarian style (I think), very malty.
St Peters Without is quite good if you like "beer".
For lager, I swore by Beck's Blue for years (well, since the days of Kaliber) but in recent years there are so many more options.
Personally, I went through a 4 month dry spell recently, and when I was out I stuck with Heineken 0.0 and Budweiser Prohibition. Both very close in taste to the fully leaded options!

Nanny State is the best I've tasted.

Nanny state is the best I've tasted as well.

I used to like a Becks Blue after a game of golf. You got to feel like you were having a proper beer but still felt fine to drive home.

Previously I didn't see the point of alcohol-free beer, I'd prefer to just have a soft drink, but I did like the Becks one.

Lime and soda.

Yeah, I don't understand the no/low alcohol beers. They don't taste great. I'd rather have a normal soft drink if I'm not drinking on a night out.

There's been a huge improvement in the quality of no-alcohol beers in recent years compared to the days of LA (for those who remember trying to drink pints of that).

There's a significant increase in the number of young folk who simply don't drink so the brewers have invested a lot in creating high quality no/low alcohol beers to cater for this growing market. Best I've tried lately is Heineken 0.0 which I found genuinely impressive.

I tried a bottle of Sainsbury Czech Lager last night. 0.5% alcohol content.
It was pretty decent. I've certainly tasted worse "full fat" beers

*Slightly off topic, but Sainsbury's also do a very decent low alcohol cider.

Another shout for this one. At a pound a 500ml bottle it's pretty reasonably prices too.

It's brewed by Staropramen, I think Morrisons have the exact same stuff with a different label on it.

i really like becks blue, i just wish they came in larger bottles, the boozers don't half give themselves huge profit margins with it though :grr: i was in Robbies for the Aberdeen game and(iirc) it was either £2.30 OR £2.15/bottle, i think tampsons was £2.30, the office £2, you can get a 15 pack in morrisons for under £8, getting 15 bottles out of Robbies etc would cost over £34 .....the pubs are thieving profiteering gits :agree:

Not sure but Nanny State is only 28 calories per bottle apparently.

I was out for a meal in Mamma Roma a few months back and asked for a non-alcohol lager. They gave me a bottle of Kaliber. Couldn't quite believe this was still on the go, the original non-alcoholic beer from back in the day. It actually tastes far better then it used to.

Tried Erdinger. It was nice enough. Malty and sweet as you say.

Not as low alcohol as the examples mentioned, but 'small' beers seem to be growing in popularity and a good middle ground. Cloudwater have done loads at 2.9%, which never disapoint.

I don’t see the point of low alcohol beers. I’ve never tried them, but I understand the point of zero alcohol beers.

Tennents Lager ticks all the boxes for avoiding alcohol. One pint and you'll be scunnered with booze all night.

I used to despise Tennents, well any lager really. Quite enjoy the odd pint the older I get. You should try unpasteurised Tennents. I had it at the Drygate brewery and it was superb.

If that's the stuff they've got in Malone's I think the Innis & Gunn tank beer they've got in Platform 5 is vastly superior.

Working my way through these.

St Peter’s Without - tastes like a porter

Heineken - very much like the real version and quite refreshing

Pistonhead Running Flat - big taste quite like the Bewdog Nanny State

I find myself getting sick of the sweetness of soft drinks after a couple, it’s the main thing I dislike about driving to a night out. I’m much happier drinking a decent alcohol free beer.

There’s also the point that when I am drinking alcoholic beers, a lot of the beers I drink nowadays are pretty strong, so it’s good to have a lower strength one every few drinks so I don’t end up smashed too easily.

I wouldn't drink them on a night out, but if you're driving and have done the kind of thing that it's quite nice to go for a beer after, then it still feels like you're able to without having to leave your car.

They're much better than they used to be.
