View Full Version : Chill out music?

Having had a brilliant, but hectic, few days inisbon, Mrs R and I are currently sitting on a balcony in Cascais. We're watching the sky with large drinks in our hands, contemplating whatever while listening to the latest Florence and the Machine record, High as hope.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it fits the bill as chill out music. I have some other songs in store, but we're here for another week and more tunes will be required, so I thought I'd seek the wisdom of the Holy Ground.
What do you listen to when you just want to get lost in relaxation?

twelvefour by the Paper Kites is gorgeous, they are an Aussie band, not my usual sort of thing but very chilled.

Yep, exactly what was required. A silent cause is lovely.

The Boy With The Arab Strap (Belle and Sebastian)is great for relaxing to. Also, Moon Safari by Air, and for something a wee bit different try The Leftovers soundtrack by Max Richter.
Leftism by Leftfield, and Ambient by Moby also do the trick.
The Orb or any of the first few Cafe del Maar comps, timeless. John Hopkins is also worth a shout. Aphex Twin ambient 1 or some Moby ((lots free on his website) all good

It’s an old one but Moon Safari by Air is superb.
****, as I typed this I have realised it’s 20 years old! My God!

You can't beat some Sigur Ros to listen to when you are wanting to relax.
Also just found an artist on Spotify called Sarcastic Sounds. Well worth a listen if you get a chance.

I love Boards of Canada, and Public Service Broadcasting. However, as this is the Holy Ground, I suspect that is too straightforward, Snr. R.
As you are in Portugal, I would seek out some Fado music. It doesn't really relax you, but certainly makes you happy life is not as bad as it could be.
I am also a great believer in Binaural music, which is supposed to reset brain patterns. There might be something in it, there might not, but worth googling anyway.

Miles Davis - Blue Miles

Miles Davis is a good shout and suited to Iberian climes.
Would also cite ‘Kind of Blue’ and ‘In a Silent Way’. My own favourite, though not everyone’s taste is ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’.

If we’re going down the Jazz route (“nice”) would also throw in some favourites of mine:
Ivan Boogaloo Joe - Right On Brother
Herbie Hancock - Fat Albert Rotunda
Charles Kynard - Charles Kynard

Was Stanley Road what you were after? It’s my go to album, but chill out music is subjective, so maybe not for everyone.

No, not quite, but it's a cracking album.
We fell asleep to it so you can count that as a success.
On the balcony and I'm playing it again now.

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2.
Love a bit of jazz. Jim Hall, Chet Baker, Paul Desmond and others - Concierto De Aranjuez. It’s 20 minutes long and based on a piece by a Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo but it blows me away every time I listen to it.
Miles Davis also does a version on his album ‘Sketches of Spain’ which is a great listen as well.

No highlights as such because I'm only listening to them once and for ambience rather than study.

Ah, great choice. Wish Ben Gibbard was making stuff like that nowadays instead of the insipid last 2 Death Cab for Cutie albums.

Would echo this. ‘Sketches of Spain’ by Davis or Rodrigo’s ‘’Concierto de Aranjuez’ are essentially the same music but both are quintessential Andalucian in tone and perfect for a hot evening in Caiscais or anywhere on the Iberian peninsula.

I also like 'Summer Night' that is on the Quiet Nights album by Miles Davis as well - has the same kind of feel. Like you are sitting somewhere on the Mediterranean when you are listening to it
