So why would Levein come out and say this? I can think of three reasons....

1. Can't stand being out of the headlines for more than 5 minutes. There is a track record with Levein and saying stuff just to get a reaction, he needs to be noticed. I'm sure there is a clinical name for this kind of behaviour but I don't care enough to Google it :wink:
2. Increase transfer value. There has been some talk of money issues at Hearts, not really convinced they are in any trouble but I am certain Dr Budge has been spending a fair bit of her own money to kickstart the playing side. That, together with the stand and the pitch, has probably left her with a much bigger hit that she was hoping for. Levein might have to start thinking about life without owner handouts.
3. Levein has genuinely heard Soutar say something. Soutar right now is not a better player than Hanlon but age makes him a better prospect, he is a young player who is a central part of (sorry hate myself) a very good defense. He is also better than Hendry, a lot better. Hendry plays for Celtic though and will probably be picked first because of that. If Soutar is thinking that too, he may see his international chances better served elsewhere.

Honestly, I think it could be all three. Yes, Levein is so self obsessed he probably screams his own name when he is having a **** but it doesn't discount the need to up the lads value nor highlight that he may have other international options.
