View Full Version : Sciatica
I have (self diagnosed) Sciatica. There are a million online sites but has anyone here experienced it and can recommend anything? I was in hospital for a week which was mostly spent in bed which I think may have kicked it off.

I'd strongly recommend Paul at Midlothian Physiotherapy, Dalhousie Road, just south of Justinlees.
He's very good at what he does, and a good Hibby too ;-)
Good luck

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I live in Cambridge but physio maybe an option. I work in a hospital so may seek an OH referral

I have mild symptoms.
Physiotherapy and osteopathy, with appropriate exercises, have helped control it.

Me too, Paul is my cousin, he’s very good Physiotherapist and has helped me a number of times from sprained ankles, pulled groin to generally being flat footed.
Recognise that you are down south, but if anyone else needs a Physio, Paul’s your man.

Thanks and appreciate the replies. Maybe change my user name to Cambridge Hibs 😁
This is some pain though! Just moved into a new place and have a sofabed still packed in the living room I can't unpack and set up. Watching TV in bed on a tablet and eating microwave food. In bits!

I was prescribed diclofenac from the gp. Eased the pain a bit.

I had it about 10 years ago, ended up having numb spots in my thigh and calf. There are a few places that might relieve it, but keep doing the exercises

Had the severely for a while, get yourself to the doc who will arrange to get an MRI done for you to see the extent of the damage. Don't start getting physio etc until you've had it properly looked at as no one can tell what's happened until the scans are done...I had a protuding disc.
Drug wise I was prescribed naproxen which is a anti inflammatory, has worked wonders.
I've went down the chiropractor route, huge rip off with zero results.... reflexology, was quite good but costs mount quickly... accupunture, same as reflexology.
As I said earlier until it's been properly diagnosed do not attempt any form of body work as it may just make the pain worse, good luck!!

Not being flippant, but I had similar pain a few years back and the biggest improvement happened when I stopped putting my wallet in my hip pocket. It had got so full of cards that it was constantly pressing on the nerve.

She also established that, when cycling, I always pushed off with the same leg.
Minor changes to posture and habits made a difference.

Apologies for being flippant, but I first heard of sciatica in the early 70s.
My metalwork teacher limped into class one day, and we all asked what was wrong.
These shoes are size 7, he replied, and see I take an 8.
Oh to be 12 again.
That was Kenny Armstrong at St David’s, for any old boys looking in.
I hope the OP gets some relief from his pain.
For personal and health reasons I have flushed codine away. I have long standing health issues but am seeking some non opiate health kicks. Easy to just sit here jellied but it's not much fun

Especially if you’re sitting a desk, leaning forward

Definitely something in this, never keep my wallet in my back pocket anymore.I still get Sciatica at times when I do certain things at work but nothing like I used since I moved my wallet.
The best thing I can suggest would be to get the firmest mattress available. I was having severe issues with sciatica on and off for 15 years until last year when, during a trip to Thailand, I found that the really firm mattresses they use over there stopped me having any pain. Last summer, I got the firmest mattress I could find and since then, I haven't had a single flare up.
Thanks for all the replies. I am in bed most of the time to lie flat ad it helps. Once I start walking it slowly gets bearable but the initial pain is brutal.

That depends how you sleep and what’s wrong with your back. I sleep on my side and too firm a mattress doesn’t let my hip sink in so my spine ends up out of alignment. Not good.

I’ve suffered with that as well and found acupuncture helps. Another good thing is a foam roller which you can get cheap online.
