View Full Version : Question Hotels in Athens?

Hermit Crab

Should we get past our friends from the Faroes where have people booked in Athens, would be quite good if everybody was staying in or around the same area of the city so we could all meet for a bevy and get the buses etc.

I'm reluctant to book anything until after the first leg v Runavik as hopefully there will be a convincing scoreline in our favour meaning we can start making firm plans.

So where have people booked?

Cheers, HC

Heard the hotels in Athens only have a capacity of 400 so might not be rooms for us all.

I've booked that hotel you've booked, in Athens but also have a back up plan of the Alex Hotel in Tripolis should my Athens plans fall through, theres no point in staying there if I cant get transport to the game and back.

We stayed just off Omonia square when we were last in Athens, and it was quite a location. Ladies of the night patroling the streets, and an indoor market that sold all sorts of live creatures stuffed into crates way too small for the anout in there.

Loved the place. :greengrin

In general I think the area that surrounds omonia Square is quite sketchy anyway so for people changing hotels, I would only really do it if your getting a cheaper deal. Mansion hotel where I'm staying says in area there are 'ladies of the night' that might approach as well as a lot of homeless people.

I think this is commonplace in this area as I don't think Athens or Greece in general has ever recovered from the Euro crisis a few years back and as a result some people have lost pretty much everything.

In short I don't think it is anything to worry about just keep your valuables out of sight and don't be to drunk if walking alone. Standard procedure.

Just think its a bit run down and sketchy, meaning a lot of homeless people that might be on some sort of drugs, prostitutes etc.

But it's slap bang in the middle of Athens and ideal for people travelling between the Airport & the Centre of Athens, also has its fair share of bars & restaurants. This is why i picked this area for the bus pick up

In my opinion there shouldn't be any hassle if you stay out of the way of these people

Best thing to do is get together with other Hibbys who are not on the bus and then hire a minibus or something and split the costs.

I'm not on the bus either but I am on the reserve list.

I’m still deliberating over going. It’s just the constant travel to get there and back, that’s putting me off. If it had been in Athens, I’d have gone, it’s just another trek from Athens to Tripoli that’s putting me off

Break it up by spending a night in Tripoli after the game?

Break it up by spending a night in Tripoli after the game?

Think the issue with that now is actually finding a hotel in Tripoli - had a look on Weds and most of the main comparison sites were only offering hotels 10+ miles outside Tripoli.

Obviously you would be able to get a taxi there/back, but they looked like they were in the middle of nowhere so not much round about. We're considering just getting somewhere in Athens and making the journey back there after the game.

I will be taking £200, this should be more than enough. Obviously this will vary if your buying for someone else aswell

I am all day Wednesday returning Saturday and was looking at 400/500 mark

Think I'll take €250, hopefully enough for beer and kebabs. That's all I need to stay happy if we win.

My flight is due to arrive at 11.15 Wednesday night so I'd be keen to share a taxi too. Think theres a couple of others on my flight as well.

Nice one, My mates decided to book up after I had and are arriving the day before, so I'm sharing in their apartment. We're in the Gaia Rooms & apartments, North of the Parthenon and not too far from where I was previously booked so can just get dropped off en route and split the bill.

Haven't seen of any other Hibees on our flight from Cephalonia

We caught the bus in from Athens airport to Omonia Square the last time we were there, it was ridiculously cheap compared to the taxi fare, then jumped in a cab to the hotel costing a couple of quid.

Obviously it was a few years ago, but it might be something you want to consider, if i remember rightly the bus took about 25 minutes to get into Athens.

Metro -- Line M3 every 30mins to Syntagma (38min Journey) (10euro or 18euro for 2 people)
Bus -- X95 to Syntagma Square (45-60min Journey) (6euro)

Hope that helps

6 euros is not bad for those on a budget, 45 mins to an hour could be right, i thought it was less but i just remember it being a big road with lots of traffic even though we landed late at night?

22Euros buys a 72 hour travel card valid for a return airport journey , I am up at the Hilton hotel and the bus stop from the airport is on the front door but compared to 50 Euro taxi journey each way its a no brainer.

Just changed hotels (again) so that we are closer to friends. Unfortunately (which I didn't notice when I booked new hotel) the Mansion Hotel are charging me full price today to cancel. Does anyone want to take over my booking? €41 pay on arrival, Mansion Hotel, 1 night Thurs 2nd August, double room, beside Omonia Square.

Quick update for those staying at Mansion Hotel

Rooms are pretty small, for those who are big boned the bathroom could be a challenge 😂😂

Whether is sweltering and it's just gone 11.00pm ☀️😎

Interestingly the bloke at check-in desk was informed weeks ago by police regarding our game amid potential violence pre game.

Take caution if travelling alone !!!

Stay safe and Mon the Hibs 💚💚

Sounds ideal! Arrive there on Thursday morning in plenty time for the bus to Tripolis.

Surprised at the likelihood of bother. Didn’t think the Greeks in Athens would take much notice of Hibs supporters, given we’re not actually playing one of the teams from there.

Ha ha wait until the morning if you think it's sweltering now. It's been mid 30s all week at 9am and it's truly unbearable. It then turns nasty mid afternoon with thunder, lightening and probably the heaviest rain I've ever seen for usually around an hour then clears up.

Probably around a dozen hibbys now at The Stanley just down the hill from you.

Great, I'm blowing out my Erse at the moment as it is let alone when I see the sun come up tomorrow. Any plans for breakfast tomorrow, I'm going along to James Joyce for around 10.30

Nah, they are waiting for your arrival G,seriously though, nobody even gave us a second look. They guy in the pink Celtic strip probably distracted them though.
