Otherwise Bogdan sounds like an expensive back up.

If Bogdan does sign for the season he's not coming to be 3rd choice, he can stay at Liverpool in that role.

Either a goalkeeper is leaving or Laidlaw is dropping down the pecking order, whether that's before the Europa game is another matter.

Laidlaw was always signed as back up. I'm sure his wage will reflect that. He's rarely let us down when covering but last seasons semi final probably confirmed he isn't number 1 material for us.

With the return of the reserve league maybe we'll see Bogdan and Marciano battle for the gloves, Dabrowski, who there are high hopes for, go on loan and Laidlaw and Martin play in the reserves.

My instinct is a seasons loan is to give Dabrowski another year to develop and then he'll be promoted to the 1st team squad permanently with Laidlaw leaving at the end of his contract.

It says in the article that he's been training with us for a few weeks so clearly we've seen a decent amount of him. I say it's a signing which makes sense. Not as exciting as a striker or midfielder but it gives us an international keeper for the europa games. No brainer.

KWJ
02-07-2018, 02:25 PM
How did nobody notice him at training :greengrin

Don't understand the confusion here by some. We need 3 keepers as we've not got one who has shown the ability to play every game consistently.

Laidlaw showed he isn't a number one. I like him but he let himself and the team down in that Semi and that's set him well back. Saying Marciano was dropped in advance of this is a bit of a myth as he had to miss the Celtic league game prior to this and Laidlaw done enough to hold the jersey while Rocky had been so so leading up to that.

An improvement on Laidlaw and some genuine competition for Rocky. All good in my book. Bogdan probably knows he has the gloves to begin as Rocky is out and they are his to keep or lose.

So am I right that:

1. We're signing an international keeper

2. He's with the current Champions League runners up, where he's played first team football.

3. He was POTY at his previous club.

4. He is known and has played under our manager

Therefore, he's pony.

Have I got that right?

One of them will and Bogdan will start the season as number 1 so it's up to him to keep the gloves. If he plays well then Rocky will be our sub goalie until he gets his chance and IMO it's as simple as that.

I like Rocky, some of his saves were unreal last season but he's not undroppable and if we can find someone better within our price range then we should go for them.

Looked a great prospect when he first came through at Bolton but didn’t quite progress at the rate he was expected to and the move to Liverpool was a massive surprise at the time given he had been dropped as first choice keeper that season - by Neil Lennon, as it happens - and only played 10 games.

He was made a bit of a scapegoat at Wigan and has struggled with injuries since.

Get a good pre season under his belt and I’m hopeful he’ll do well. Even just training regularly at Liverpool will have been a huge experience for him, much more so than would be the case for an outfield player.

Must admit I am surprised though as Lennon was pretty quick to drop him at Bolton, and Andy Lonergan wasn’t especially dazzling as his replacement.

My only concern would be whether or not playing in our European games at the height of a hot summer might be asking too much of a man so ginger.

I remember him making some cracking saves for Bolton and thinking he was a top keeper, but then I remember him getting a name for being a bit error prone too.

As I posted earlier in the thread, I find it a little puzzling and maybe a little concerning that Lennon dropped Bogdan at Bolton when he’d been number one for a good number of years, having seen off the challenge of Ali Al-Habsi to become number two to Jaaskelainen, eventually displacing him even though Jussi ended up playing regularly for West Ham for a good couple of years afterwards.

You don’t get signed by a club like Liverpool if you don’t have something about you.

I don’t think players necessarily will have a problem with managers dropping them, it’s the way they do it that’ll stand out. If Lennon explained the decision and did it in a respectful way to Bogdan I’m sure he’d remember that.

He would have been relatively young and inexperience for a keeper at that stage I’m guessing as well? With everything going on at Bolton at the time maybe Lennon just wanted to get as much experience in the side as possible? Guessing though.

Far from it, he was 27 by that point with just shy of 100 appearances, a lot of them in the Premier League and having had three years of being first choice goalkeeper. Obviously Lennon must still see something in him to go out and sign him but it just seems odd given the circumstances back then.

If Rocky is back from injury by the end of the transfer window I can see Laidlaw going out on loan to a League 1 side for experience.

We have Marciano on a decent length of contract and Laidlaw could develop into a decent 1xv keeper.

Bogdan is a stop gap measure. We help him to rebuild his career and he gives us cover whilst we are short.
