Will we see a change in editorial policy in the coming months?

I would think it very likely.

That Dacre was a headcase. He always looked like his head was about to explode with rage. He got a lot of kudos from the Lawrence case but I wasn't convinced of his humanitarian leanings.
It was a good paper back in the sixties, as was the Express.

What was it like in the 60s? I had just assumed that it was always just a poisonous mess.

I like the stories where Dacre is described as being gorilla-like getting close to print deadline - he'd scratch himself so hard that he'd bleed through his shirt.

Pre WW2 it supported the Blackshirts, it's owner at the time Lord Rothermere supporting the Nazis. Never hid his admiration of Hitler.

Dacre is a contemptible person. A coward as he rarely put his head above the parapet to defend his noxious views. A nasty bully (see Polly Toynbee in Friday's Guardian). Because politicians are scared to upset the Mail he has enormous and disproportionate power and influence over the whole political process. I have seen it reported by a former Mail insider that in the evening hours in the run-up to print time Dacre would, as all editors presumably would, sit at his desk and make editorial decisions. This period apparently was known to staff as the "Vagina Monologues", thus called after the stage show, because Dacre would score through text/bin it/amend it etc all the while muttering "c***", "c***, "c***. And this from a man who identified the Mail as being a woman's paper and adopted an editorial policy to reflect that.

The present Lord Rothermere said that he would not interfere with the editor or editorial policy of the Mail. David Cameron asked Rothermere to get sack Dacre but he refused. Geordie Greig apparently will report directly to Rothermere and not to Dacre,who will be the editor-in-chief of the Group. If both of these factors stay unchanged there may be hope that the Mail might become a somewhat less venomous newspaper.

Newspapers are like families. There's a lot of people involved and they don't always dance to the same beat.
