You can get 66/1 on Russia with a company called Spreader. It's a long shot, but that seems high for the host nation.

80/1 is available with the same company for Poland and England are 20/1.

I might have a few small e/w interest bets.

I think Germany are stick ons to make the final at least, but 5/1 isn't value, imo.

Germany is my pick for winning the tournament, but seeing them put out a strong team and lose to Austria yesterday shows they're quite beatable! Going to be an interesting tournament anyway, looking forward to it.

Seen on Twitter yesterday that they've not won in their last 5 games. First time this century that it's happened

That's to win it outright.

Each way is half.

Edit: Ladbrokes are laying it at 5/2.

I reckon there's money to be made betting against Argentina. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole. They scraped through qualifying, scored the least goals of the top 6 in the table and were destroyed by Spain in a recent friendly. They were well beaten by Nigeria not so long ago as well albeit without Messi. I'm shocked they are as short as 10s to win it.

Unless corruption rears its head and there's some major referee tinkering, I think Russia have absolutely no chance of winning it, and might struggle to get out of the group. Just a lack of real talent and their results in the lead up dont look encouraging. Could be the least impressive host nation since South Africa. 80/1 Poland looks better value, although I hear Lewandowski has been off form.

Don't see Germany winning it. A good centre half pairing but probably not as good as Spains. Two average full backs. A very good midfielder in Kroos, but other than that the rest are just good players and no outstanding forward. All IMO of course.

Brazil have a better squad, as do France and Spain are also better in defence and midfield, although also like Germany, not the best up top.

My picks would be:

France
Spain
Brazil
Germany/Portugal

In that order.

To be fair there's only been one host nation since South Africa and that was Brazil who made it to the semi finals (and admittedly got humped). :greengrin

On paper France look an excellent side but I’m just not sure how good a mentality they’ve got. It used to be a criticism of Holland that they had all the ability but too many egos and couldn’t gel as a side, without knowing too much about the French they strike me as being similar.

I think they could either win it or get knocked out in the group stages, neither would surprise me.

That looks good value for Muller. Reckon there’s a good chance he’ll take penalties for Germany so you could be looking at a couple from the spot.

Aye, I agree re Argentina and how they'll not mount any sort of serious challenge. And hopefully it'll put to bed the cliche that Messi can't be considered as one of the all time greatest footballers because he hasn't done it on the world stage, he's simply not got a good enough team around him to compete against far more complete international sides.

He dragged them through their play off win to get to the World Cup with a hat trick in difficult circumstances and scored a few brilliant goals at the last World Cup.

Stuck £20 on Brazil to win at 5/1 a few weeks ago.

had a stab at argentia at 9-1 , on skybet, only as you get stake back if it loses, cant go wrong

I got muller at 32-1 top scorer, , same odds on mbappe,

had a nibble on lewandowski at 40s, lets face it, a hattrick and you can win it, just look at the previous winners, davor suker and oleg kuznetsov to mention a few,! even James in the last one, great player, but colombia were never winning it

There's a realistic chance that Muller could get close to Klose's record 16 WC goals. Perhaps not in this one but he's young enough to have another couple of WCs in him. I would expect him to take any penalties for them to boost his tally. If I am right, I think he is on 10 from 2 tournaments.

Depends on group placing but Portugal would appear to have a not insurmountable progression to the SFs if they finish second behind Spain - likely ties against Russia/Uruguay and then France before playing Brazil or Belgium in the semis, which may be the stumbling block.

If he avoids injury he should feature in every game for Germany this time round and one would expect him to still be a pick or bench at the age of 32 next time round.

Don’t think it will make a lot of odds. Pogba, ****e, Dembele, Mbappe and possibly Matuidi would all be ahead of him. They may even start with Giroud up top aswell which would either mean playing 2 up top with Griezzman or Griezzman playing as a 10. I doubt he’d start.

T&Cs state max £10 on mine:

How to Claim

Place a bet on any team to win the World Cup and get Money Back as a Free Bet if they don’t win.
If your team loses we will refund all win singles and the win part of each-way singles as a Free Bet up to £/€10 within 24 hours. E.g. A £5 each-way bet (£10 total stake) would receive a £5 refund.

Put a wee tenner on James Rodriguez to get voted player of the tournament. I think Colombia will do quite well and he is a different player when playing for his country. Seems to be the main man and he relishes it. Thought 66/1 was value considering how well he did at the last World Cup.

No chance Russia are getting near the final. They are woeful. France by far the best squad but don't seem to hit the heights they should under Deschamps, Brazil good but winning in Russia is a huge ask. Germany out of form but expect that to change. Nobody talking much about Spain. Squad currently not as good as they had 8-10 years ago (which was exceptional) but still very good. Might be worth a few quid...

In today's world of multimillionaire players travelling the world, there is no logical reason why a South American team can't win in Europe. I think Brazil have an excellent chance with that squad, and the 'South Americans can't win in Europe' thing is just a historical coincidence rather than a pattern that tells us anything.

Skybet have a 500/1 outsider for Samedov & Golovin to both have 3 or more shots on target. Probably worth £1.
They've also got Smolov to score, both teams to score, Smolov & Al-Jassim to both be carded at 50/1.
Correct score odds aren't great today, certainly not enough to tempt me, 3-1 Russia is 16/1 which isn't bad I suppose.

Collect your dough! :-)

Onto the next World Cup special!

BBC commentators bingo! The joys!

What will the commentators mention during the game? Skybet are offering 6/1 that’s been boosted to 12/1 on all Rnglish clubs that are represented st the World Cup to be mentioned.

That’s appeal but even more is previous World Cup winners of Germany, Brazil, Spain and Italy being mentioned during the game.

There’s a logic in that by the time England play Tunisia Brazil, Spain and Germany will all have played. You can see Spain get a mention because of their Boss getting sacked and Germany always seems to be a popular choice! Brazil are Brazil, best known footballing country in the world!

That leaves Italy. There’s a chance that he’ll get mentioned as they played England in a friendly three games ago.

So on that basis previous World Cup winners in Germany, Brazil, Spain and Italy all to be mentioned a 16/1 appeals.

I’m also backing Mo Salah to be mentioned by the commentators during the England andvTunisa game. The Premiers top scorer, just back from injury and the current African player of the year. 3/1 on skybet he gets mentioned.

I’ve gone for Suarez top scorer at 25/1. Brilliant odds considering Uruguay are in a group with the two lowest ranked sides

I could've swore Angels was the last song before the stunning blonde female came onto the field with the match ball.

I've stuck a fiver on Portugal, Uruguay and Spain all to score 3 or more goals tomorrow. Returns 78 quid.

The bookies would have made a fair load after the completion of the MD1 fixtures. Brazil, Argentina & Germany all drawing against what looked like winnable fixtures for them.

Actually think Morocco are a reasonable bet to beat Portugal today.

Portugal straight and Uruguay minus a goal 13/8 my dough. This tournament has been a betting bloodbath so far.

I took my kitty up from about £45 to £165 yesterday pretty much exclusively on the Russia v Egypt game. Corners over and three sequential goals over bets did it.

Trying to reach £500 or more by the end of the tournament. Any suggestions for today's games?

I'd be surprised if Uruguay didn't bag a hatful today but probably go - 1 at about 8-13.

Disclaimer I'm currently getting horsed this World Cup.

6 corners in that Portugal game at half time. Bet 365 offering 1.30 for over 9 now - I'm having that I think.

Blow for my bet Saudi Arabia number 5 dropped.

I asked Skybet if they were planning on doing the bingo commentary again and fhey confirmed that they will be for England’s games, starting with Panama!

There’s bets that catch my eye for mentions during the game

Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico 4/1

As England are playing Panama they’ll hopefully get a mention! England’s last warm up game was against Costa Rica where Rashford scored a stunner so if he plays expect the commentators to mention that. Also England played Costa Rica to help the get the measure of Panama.

And I can see Mexico get a mention. I believe that whoever progresses from this group will play Mexico in the quarter final, depending on how Mexico do kbvoulsy. But the comentators like to get carried away of how far England can go!

Qatar 7/4

I can see England beating Panama (!!!) and I wouldn’t be surprised if the commentators start mention the venue of the next World Cup if Panama are heading home from this one after a loss.

Jack Wiltshire 7/4

Dele Alli could be injured and there’s a debate on who’ll replace him. If Wilshire has been selected it may well have been him. I can see him getting a mention brocade if this.

Mo Salah 3/1

It’s a risqué one but there’s a Chance Salah will get a mention due to the contribution he made last season to Liverpool and the fact England’s captain, Harry Kane, lost out to him as top scorer in the Premier League. It’s unlikley Salah is going to beat Kane in the World Cup.
