Just those? Could there be CL drop outs, or would they not come in until round 3?

I went to Bratislava last year and watched a slovan game. The standard was very poor, but you could drink in your seat for €1.50 a pint.

Season 16/17 and they had some impressive results along the way all things considered. 1-1 v Legia Warsaw in the CL qualifying round then a 1-1 draw away at AZ Alkmar and a win V Maccabi Tel Aviv in Ireland as well as a couple of close games v Zenit in the EL group stage. They were managed by Stephen Kenny and had Dean Shiels in their squad at the time.

They had to play their home group matches in Dublin. Decent effort for a LOI club.

Indeed, they're a decent side but not as strong as a lot of the other teams that'll be in the second round draw. It wouldn't be an easy tie by any means but I think we'd beat them. Although Stephen Kenny has had a few decent results against us tbf.

Yep that’s what I want to hear. We’d obviously need to get a bit of luck with the draw but it’s not unthinkable to reach the group stages.

It is, we are very likely to get a team from 'Northern' Europe (a British side, Baltic states, Scandinavia) unless we are placed in one of the overlapping groups in the draw, in which case it could be a team from anywhere.

One thing that's a bit of a bugger about the seedings is that a team like Burnley who have not been in Europe in my lifetime are automatically given a high seeding purely because of where they are from while teams that maybe get through a couple of ties each year would still be behind them in the seedings without having a decent crack at getting to the groups.

It's meant to be about the teams here yet Celtic have a couple of decent years then have to play another tie because the Scottish coefficient on a whole has dropped. I guess this is partly as their last 16 year will be dropping off too though.

Aye, don't mean to be pro Celtic but the seedings can be a bugger.

Easiest possible ties please and preferably against other teams in their pre season. We might not make the Group Stage this year but let's boost our co-efficient to help the cause in the coming seasons. With a Europa expansion and more money ploughed in it could be the perfect timing. Lennon, Dempster and Craig will know this and any whisper to the Tache and he'll be holding a 3 season stiffy.

Looks like about a 3rd of a chance of getting a Welsh/Norn Iron or Irish team.

That will rest on how the pre-draw is done, but given how last year's groups were made, there was at least one team from Northern Ireland, Ireland or Wales in groups 7-10 (the 'Northern' groups). One group had a Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish team making up three of the five unseeded teams. If that happened again and we were in the seeded part of that group, we'd have a 60% chance of a nearby tie.

Regionalisation was done away with in 2009, although usually the bigwigs at UEFA make the decision whether or not they want to regionalise the draw the day before the draw, makes sense right?.....

I'm aware these links are from years ago but from what I can tell they haven't changed since.

Formalised regions were done away with in 2009, correct, but the First Qualifying Round absolutely adheres to an unwritten, loose form of regionalising and has done so very obviously since the 2013/14 season, with the 2015/16 season being a bit of an anomaly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014%E2%80%9315_UEFA_Europa_League_qualifying_phas e_and_play-off_round#Seeding

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%80%9317_UEFA_Europa_League_qualifying_phas e#Seeding

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_UEFA_Europa_League_qualifying_phas e_and_play-off_round#Seeding

If you look at those pots, there is definitely regionalisation going on.

In 2014/15, it's groups 5-7 that are 'Northern teams'.

In 2016/17, it's groups 1-4.

In 2017/18, it's groups 7-10.

Furthermore, the Kassiesa website, far more knowledgable about how this all works than myself, says "Although the regulations no longer require the use of regional groups (https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/uefa-cup-regions.html) (as used before 2009), until now UEFA still uses some kind of regionalization in the first qualifying rounds. At first the clubs are divided into seeded and unseeded teams, and then the seeded and unseeded teams are split into regional groups. The general approach seems to use the North/Central/South scheme, but no specific rules are known."

Part of the changes that have been introduced this year are about that. From now on Celtic won’t be affected by Scottish co-efficient but will be able to have only a club one. It’s why they are not complaining about the extra round they are having to play this year because they expect to be able to build up their own co-eff points from now on.

Not that I'd wish to encourage anyone to gamble but perhaps the bookies might be able to help with that dilemma.

Eg supposing Hibs can be had at evens in first tie, and for arguments sake a trip to Ireland is £300, while one to the continent would be £600. Spend £300 on getting to Ireland and put £300 on Hibs to qualify. We win, you've got your £600 to fund second round trip, if we lose you're down £300 at bookie but you don't need it for euro trip anyway.

Of course we are. Doesn't mean the likes of Dundalk or Cork City for example (even though though they're in the CL qualifiers rather than the EL) couldn't cause us problems over 2 legs. They're decent sides.

I'd be pleased rather than worried if we get to the second round and draw Dundalk but I'd be hoping the management and players treat them with a bit of respect as they're no mugs. I imagine they would though.

In Copenhagen we were 13/2 to win in 90minutes which we needed to do to at least take it to Extra time so me and the lads stuck £40 each on it so we knew we had that money banked by the time penalties started.

My mate had flights to Hamburg the following week selected ready just to book as soon as penalties were over. Wasn't to be but meant Copenhagen was a 'free trip' for us. Will probably look at doing similar this year whether I make it wherever we get drawn.

Faroe Island - NSI Runavik
Finland - lives or KuPS or Luhti
Iceland - IBV or Stjarnan

Rangers got Progres Niederkorn from Luxembourg last season. Would be quite amusing if we got them too and skelped them.

It would be but would be even better if Rangers got knocked out by them again. Imagine the meltdown.

I don't really mind who we get as long as they're not in the UK and there's plenty of accommodation to be had at short notice.

I had a ticket for the away leg against AEK..... unfortunately I couldn't get to go. What are the chances of us still being in Europe in September nowadays?

The cancelled game?

Is the draw definitely regionalised? I couldn't see anything on the UEFA website to confirm that.

It probably is but UEFA won't say how.

Typical corrupt UEFA with non disclosure of what is actually going on if the Champions League draw is anything to go by.

There’s no hard and fast rule on the regional boundaries but likely to be one of the below:

Unseeded
Estonia - FCI levadia or Narva Trans
Faroe Island - NSI Runavik
Finland - lives or KuPS or Luhti
Iceland - IBV or Stjarnan
Latvia - Liepaja or Riga FC
Lithuania- Stumbras
N. Ireland - Cliftonville, Coleraine or Glenavon
Republic of Ireland - Derry City or Shamrock Rovers
Wales - Connah’s Quay Nomads

In the last few years Scottish teams competing in the first qualifying round have always faced a team in the Northern region.

Thanks. I have added your northern region line to the map here https://drive.google.com/open?id=1S46DwYlgzTSsn4_7_J7sl-55UchyiyTG&usp=sharing

Following the Preliminary round draw this morning, St Joseph's (Gibraltar) and Tre Fiori (San Marino) could be included in the Northern section of the draw if they win their ties.

How come? Would they not go in to the southern part of the draw?

Preliminary round draw

Europa (GIB) v Prishtina (KOS)
Sant Julià (AND) v Gżira (MLT)
Engordany (AND) v Folgore (SMR)
B36 Tórshavn (FRO) v St Joseph's (GIB)
Birkirkara (MLT) v KÍ Klaksvík (FRO)
Tre Fiori (SMR) v Bala Town (WAL)
Cefn Druids (WAL) v Trakai (LTU)

First legs on 28 June; second legs on 5 July.

Surely it'd only be the teams in bold that would go in to the Northern section draw for QR1?

The draws for Round 1 and 2 occur before the conclusion of the above Preliminary matches. For the purposes of the round 1 draw, the Preliminary ties are treated as if the seeded team won.

Example:
For the B36 Tórshavn (FRO) v St Joseph's (GIB) tie, UEFA will presume the seeded team (Torshavn) will progress and therefore the winner of this tie will be placed in the Northern region. If St Joseph's win, they will take the place of Torshavn in the Northern Region.

Likewise, as KÍ Klaksvík (FRO) are unseeded, if they beat Birkirkara (MLT), they will take their place in the South Mediterranean region.

Hibs only published the unseeded teams, thats why you’re seeing a large difference between the 2.

How do The Rangers have the same coefficient points as us? I know our record in Europe is pretty poor but surely they have no euro record, even factoring in if they count the oldco has it not been more than 5 years since they qualified.
Not that it really matters just interesting.

It’s based on your previous five years performance in Europe or the Coefficient of your country, whichever is higher. In both our cases our individual coefficient is less than the Scottish collective coefficient.

we should be getting through to play a seeded team, then Id say we have a 50% chance of drawing a team we can expect to compete with, the top half we could give a good game, but alot of them are at a level above us, the first Q round though come on lets not do a Sevco..surely

"The people!" must be worried for a rematch against the mighty Progres Niederkorn:wink:

What we don't want is a team that is halfway through their season.

Spot on. no Scandinavian teams thanks. teams halfway through season are far too sharp,
Its almost as important as the team you get, is where they are in the season!
