It’s been pretty low key as far as the news is concerned, but this eruption could go on for years. The threat to life is low, but the fact that these are volcanic islands means that without the volcano they wouldn’t exist. The latest eruption is just a continuation of what has formed the islands in the first place. It’s an irony that places like this are such fertile grounds for people to farm and thrive.

The minerals required for plant growth are contained in the ash from volcanic eruptions, a local (to me) garden has done lots of research on the properties of 'rock dust'

It's the same in Edinburgh. When you're driving in from the east you can still see the ridges dug into Arthur's Seat where prehistoric farmers grew crops.
