View Full Version : Europa Cup Dates

If Celtic beat Motherwell, the dates for our games are...

12 July: First qualifying round, first leg
19 July: First qualifying round, second leg

and we find out who we play on 19 June: First & second qualifying round draws, Nyon.

Pretty tight timetable to sign players.

How much is it worth to us to go in this early? Would we be better giving it a miss?

If not, what’s the chances of us getting a team from Majorca?

Last year it was €215,000 for the first qualifying round in prize money, then you'd have the home gate receipts on top of that also.

All anyone other than Celtic (and eventually, the rangers) do is spend the year trying to qualify for Europe.

How easy would it be to get tickets for the away tie? I know it depends on the opposition, but what was it like for brondby?

It was easy for Malmo and Brondby. Both big stadiums
Be fine at this stage for most European grounds

I know and to what end? An early start and an early embarrassment usually.

Just wondering if it’s worth the money.

Should we bother with any tournament? They usually don't end well.

The long term ambition for the club is to compete regularly in Europe - and to eventually get into the group stages. The best way to do that is qualify year on year, increasing our turnover and becoming more competitive in these qualifiers.

Well any NI team would be great. We could all enjoy the unique 'cultural experience' of the Orange Parade then head of to the match. What a day out!

In the qualifying rounds and the play-off round, teams are divided into seeded and unseeded teams based on their 2018 UEFA club coefficients.

There are 94 teams expected to play in round one, I suspect that 47 of these with the highest points will be seeded - I expect Hibs if qualified hopefully, to be seeded.

Aye fair enough - just doesn’t excite me playing games against teams I’ve never heard of before I go on holiday.

Glentoran or Cliftonville will be. They play each other tomorrow to decide who qualifies.

As long as we don't get a Scandinavian team halfway through their season as we seem to have gotten for almost all of our last few ties.

We haven't won a non-Intertoto tie since we beat Videoton in 1989. Would be nice to end another unwanted record.

I’m sure in 2016 a couple posters were able to work out a shortlist if probable countries we would likely be drawn teams from, any1 able to do so again this year? If we make it obviosuly

Only 9 weeks away. Hope the recruitment team have their targets well established. Would be wise to not sell mcginn until after this tie.

Same here - I'll only make the second leg. Which is more than I managed for Brondby - summer football

In 2013 I think the cup final was right at the end of May but we played Malmo in early July after a friendly in Dumbarton on about 29th June followed by friendlies in Gibraltar and Algarve ( v Notts Forest ) in first week of July so we had almost no time for rest and preparation . In 2016 we had a bit more time between final and first Brondby match . Hopefully this year Celtic will win cup and we`ll have time to prepare matches from 12th July . Sometimes EL matches are brought forward by a day if another club in same city is at home on the same night ( no need to worry for us but opponents could be affected )

It's the same weeks as we played Malmo and Brondby on. The way they've changed the format to add in the prelim round from this year helps our clubs massively cause before this season the first round was end of June/start of July

Can’t see it. Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to buy, I mean win, back to back trebles. And god bless the man’s very sporting soul for it. As a manager it’s only natural he wants to test himself against some of the smallest budgets in Europe. It’s called ambition. Let’s match on into Europe anyway.

Assuming we qualify (which we will...trust me), I'm heading to the away tie. I'm getting married on the 7th of July, the wife to be can only get a few days off so we are going no matter where we play, is it regionalised or could we be anywhere?

It's not regionalised. Could be anywhere from Ireland or Wales to Greece, Armenia, Latvia or Belarus.

Basically any European country apart from England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Holland and France. Their teams enter later.

Cliftonville beat Glentoran today in NI's EL play-off so they'll be in the draw for the first qualifying round. Probably the only team from the top league here where Hibs fans would be met with a warm welcome in the unlikely event of being drawn against them.
