Neat idea - BD - Like A Rolling Stone

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal

How does it feel?
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

When you're in love with a beautiful woman, it's hard

Dr Hook

A classic.

There's a line later in the song which sounds like; " When you're in love with a beautiful woman, you want your ride". :tee hee:

When I found out that it was actually "You watch her eyes" I was most disappointed.

That is iconic.

As is "One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock."

For lyric to be truly iconic, there should be no need to attribute it to a song or an artist.

Everyone knows it immediately.

However, well kent doesn't necessarily mean iconic, but that's a subject for another thread.

Then work came and made us free
What price now for a shallow piece of dignity?

A Design For Life - Manic Street Preachers

A heart of stone, a smoking gun

Design for Life qualifies as iconic imo, Bloc Party maybr not so much but they are great lyrics.

Agreed, to be iconic it should invoke an era, event or person that represent a time or changed the path of history.

I'd say a song performed at Woodstock in 1969 or the first mainstream rock and roll song are contenders.

Jarvis had a few decent ones actually.. okay maybe I've just started thinking of ones I like rather than iconic. But I'm enjoying myself.:

"You will never understand how it feels to live your life with no meaning or control, and with nowhere left to go." - Pulp, common people.

"Let's do some living after we die" - Rolling Stones, Wild Horses.

"She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean, she was the best damn woman that I ever seen." - ACDC, You shook me all night long (defo iconic that one)

"So how can you tell me that you're lonely and say for you that the sun don't shine?" Ralph McTell, Streets of London.

"Jimmy was a local boy but he's seen much more than a change in the weather." The Rifles, Local Boy.

"Never saw it as the start. It's more a change of heart." Ocean Colour Scene, the day we caught the train

Now I'm a union man
Amazed at what I am
I say what I think, that the company stinks
Yes I'm a union man

When we meet in the local hall
I'll be voting with them all
With a hell of a shout, it's "Out brothers, out!"
And the rise of the factory's fall

Oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
Til the day I die
Til the day I die

Us union men are wise
To the lies of the company spies
And I don't get fooled by the factory rules
'Cause I always read between the lines

And I always get my way
If I strike for higher pay
When I show my card to the Scotland Yard
And this is what I say:

Oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
Til the day I die
Til the day I die

Before the union did appear
My life was half as clear
Now I've got the power to the working hour
And every other day of the year

So though I'm a working man
I can ruin the government's plan
And though I'm not hard, the sight of my card
Makes me some kind of superman

Oh, oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
Til the day I die
Til the day I die

You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
Til the day I die
Til the day I die

She’s got a smile that it seems to me, reminds me of childhood memories

silver horses, run down moonbeams, in her dark eyes

She told me come but I was already there

I’ve seen a million faces, and I’ve rocked them all

But I gotta get out, I gotta break out now, before the final crack of dawn

She was more like a beauty queen, from a movie scene

Rebel souls, deserters we are called

Like a fool, I fell in love with you, turned my whole world upside down

And as we wind in down the road, our shadows taller than our soul

is this the real life, is this just fantasy

we're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl

If we are doing confusing lyrics then how about this mind bender from Billy Bragg.

If I had written a song last year when I was say, 21 years and 11 months old, and I had then stuck it in a drawer. Yeah, but you have changed your original song and are effectively writing a new one.

He is either 21 and has said he is 22 or he is 22 and said he is 21.

The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

I don't have to sell my soul, he's already in me

Took me a while to recall the previous James one but I recognised this as soon as I read it.

I think if you fall into a certain age bracket, this was the be-all and end-all.

I don't want to start a debate about what the best album ever was, and I wouldn't necessarily put this forward, but when this came out it simply changed everything for people my age. No doubt, no dispute, this was the album you listened to and these were the opening lines. That makes it truly iconic, though you could have posted from "Made of Stone" too, I reckon.

Having said all that, it's made me realise there's a lack of Smiths lyrics on here.

As previously promised, some Smiths - the lyrics of Morrissey, laid over the music of Johnny Marr

"There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die"

"I am the son, and the heir, of a shyness that is criminally vulgar"

Two of my favourite bands from the 70s ...

"A man conceived a moment's answers to the dream
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim
A movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you ..."

&

"Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off
Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes
As the sound of motorcars fades in the night time
I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right
And it's hello babe, with your guardian eyes so blue
Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true ..."

Since we're talking history, how about this from 1642 (only song lyrics from the 1970s AFAIK):

Stone walls do not a prison make
Nor Iron bars a cage
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage
If I have freedom in my love
And in my soul am free
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty.

Or one that has always made my heart ache - about African slaves in the US from 1927 but relating to an earlier era:

I get weary and sick of trying
I'm tired of living and scared of dying

I saw a dead head sticker on a Cadillac. A little voice inside my head said don’t look back you can never look back.

News guy wept when he told he told us earth was really dying.

A cop knealt and kissed the feet of a priest and a queer threw up at the sight of that.

So no-one told you life was gonna be this way

I met a gin-soaked bar room queen in Memphis, she tried to take me upstairs for a ride

And you come to me on a summer breeze
