10 dead and 15 injured after a van drives into pedestrians in Toronto. What the **** is wrong with these people.

Well done the Toronto Police.

Meanwhile, an officer has been praised for not opening fire during a tense standoff with the suspect, who claimed to be armed.
Video broadcast on CBC News showed a man pointing what appeared to be a gun at officers and shouting "kill me".
The officer tells the man to "get down" and when the suspect says he has a gun, the officer repeats: "I don't care. Get down." The suspect was then arrested without shots being fired.

Would have played out very differently south of the border in the USA

Driver named as Alek Minassian, a 25 year old student from north Toronto. Absolute tragedy. Thanks to the calm reaction of the arresting officer we might at least get some answers to his motives.

Terrible news.
From reading initial reports the captured suspect seems to be a bit of a loner.
He wanted the cop to shoot him so it looks like he was suicidal.

Boak inducing reading the ****-a-thon over the fact he wasn't shot.

I read his post as meaning the opposite, TBH.
Of course, I may be wrong. :dunno:

You need to explain that comment.

Sorry mate but I can’t agree with that, the fella has just killed 9/10 people and has then drawn a firearm, the police officer should have taken the shot, not only did he endanger his own lives but potentially more by not following procedure.

What procedure?

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told journalists the officer had done a "fantastic job" to understand the "circumstance and environment" and get to a "peaceful resolution".

He said police in the city were "taught to use as little force as possible in any given situation".

He did not draw a firearm. He was unarmed and was pointing a mobile phone. The police officer did everything an American police officer wouldn't have done. The man has been arrested and will face a court.

And by successfully arresting him and being able to interrogate him through legal channels, perhaps they've saved countless more lives?

Far too often these cowards kill themselves or are killed before we can extract some workable reason or intelligence for why they've carried out such attacks. Every time one is successfully arrested and can be held accountable is a victory IMO.

Is that right mate? I thought it was a firearm. Fair enough then, good call from the officer.

I was under the impression that it was a firearm pointed at the police officer not a mob phone as was pointed out to me. If it was a firearm pointed directly at the police or anyone then the procedure would be to engage with lethal force. That’s standard policy throughout most forces worldwide. I’m sure if it was a firearm instead of a mob phone then the officer would have had no other option but to use lethal force.

Like someone mentioned already, if this had occurred south of the border it wouldn't have mattered what he was waving at the officer, gun, phone or white flag he'd be in his own personal refrigeration unit now.

Speaks volumes for the difference quality training and living in a society not swarming in guns makes.

The chances are tho’ that this nutter will probably top himself at the earliest opportunity. I hope the Canadian suicide watchers are vigilant.
