View Full Version : Any chance game could be in doubt again due to waterlogged pitch?

The rain and sleet has been relentless in Edinburgh since about yesterday lunchtime. Our garden is certainly unplayable but I'd hope the Easter Road drainage is a lot better than ours! One thing's for sure, it will be exceptionally soggy underfoot.

Surely this favours us as Hamilton play on an artificial surface so will not be used to a soggy surface...?

Most likely not going to be a free flowing football match tonight.... danger of injuries too.

Given the conditions today I would play with two wingers...as in ducks

Will certainly be a test for the drainage - if the forecast is correct then rain will have fallen constantly for 30 hours in the run up to kick off!

I wouldn't think so, it's a sand based pitch so it should drain very well.

I don't think there has been a game called off at easter road for a waterlogged pitch since the new stand went up

They play on grass just as much as plastic so doubt it'll be a problem for them

It's absolutely miserable in Fife, sleet and rain for the rest of the day will make the conditions interesting.

Could favour us with wide players and pacey strikers.

I remember a really miserable day many years ago.Willie MacFarlane told me that they didn’t think many would turn up even the front half of the stand was soaked and so they watered the pitch all morning and the ref called the game off.

Ir's not raining in Leith at the moment. Couple of light showers in the morning but not a lot else. Forecast is light rain for much of the day, game will be fine.

Metcheck thinks otherwise.

Sure we had a pre season friendly v Sunderland called off about 5 year ago due to the rain. IIRC it was like a river running down St Clair street, dont think we have to worry about anything today though.

It was the Barnsley? Game that was called off, it also pished down against Sunderland though I can’t mind if that was the same pre season?

Possibly, I just remember the river down the road and some 'casuals' jumping the wall into the graveyard after getting a phone call about a fight up easter road (at least thats vaguely what I think I overheard)......anyway, I dont think a couple of them realised there was glass cemented into the top of the wall going over :greengrin

You can take flags on sticks.

If the game's off, they'd need to announce it very soon.

If it keeps coming down, the game will be goosed. Having said that, I think the authorities will be hell brent on getting it played so they'll probably remain fairly mute on the subject of postponement. Fortunately in Jamie Quacklaren, we have a useful pochard in the box who should help us scaup all three points.

I'll get my coat.

Sometimes the fans can be a bit further down the 'pecking order' when it comes to such announcements.

There was a European game - inter tattie Cup, I think - the pitch was like a swimming pool, ball would hardly roll at all even if leathered. I am sure there was a shot on goal by Hibs that stopped short but had it been normal conditions would have rocketed in and beaten the keeper. Can't remember who it was we played that night but it was the wettest pitch I have ever seen. Think Bobby Williamson was manager.

Vetra ? Finished 1-1 with Oconnor scoringAye, that sounds right, just looked and Mowbray was manager. The conditions were laughable. Someone said it would have been called off had it not been the inter toto and the team had come so far. I think the West Side of the pitch was the worst. Steven Whitacre played in that game and should have scored. 14 years later and still playing - that's a decent career.
