I don’t think he was as bad as some remember. The biggest issue was his applause of the Huns whilst not even acknowledging us. That stuck in the craw of many. I always enjoy his punditry. Hope he pulls through.

Certainly hope he pulls through too, cant say Ive enjoyed his punditry though, clearly never researched and very cliched. Still not the time and place, nothing is more important than your health and happiness. Hope you pull through Ray.

He was very well thought of by the Hibs players - the fans not so much following his round of applause against the Huns.

I've posted this before, when he left ER he went around the whole team (including reserves) giving the players his personal phone number and told them if they ever needed any help or advice then to call him. A first team player I knew at the time said he was a total gentleman.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Chris Jackson was very complimentary about him at the time that’s for sure.

My cousin, who is around 20 years older than me was an ex pro down south. He is friends with a number of really well known former footballers/managers. My cousins 2 sons are only 4/6 years younger than me and lived their lives in England. When Wilkins signed for Hibs they both told me he was easily the nicest and most friendly person involved in football they had met, and they'd met loads.
Hope he makes a full recovery.

I don't think it was really his fault he was poor for us, he was 39/40 and his legs were gone. Like many before and since I think he just didn't want to admit it was time to call it a day and wanted to keep playing. Manager has more questions to answer than the player. The Rangers incident was unfortunate, I was there that night and he got absolute dogs abuse, there was no way back for him after that.

Anyway it's all irrelevant really, wish him all the best and hope he pulls through.

I like Wilkins. When he was commentating in Italian football on Channel 4 his co commentator would ask him his opinion but the first thing Ray would say would always be “first up, good afternoon ladies and gentlemen” before going on to say his bit.

Never rated him in a Hibs shirt and anyone who has heard him phoning in to a talk Sport will realise he has a serious drink problem. Like others have said, however, he is widely reported to be a lovely guy by those who have played with him. Let’s hope he makes a full recovery.

i notice the BBC have airbrushed his time at Hibs out of their article...still we are in good company, they fail to mention PSG too.

I met Ray Wilkins & Darren Jackson in the Cowgate after a game, think it was either the Kitchen or the Living Room and Ray was actually quite introverted for a player that had been around. Darren was feeling sorry for himself as he'd missed a penalty that night but he soon cheered up when he bagged off with the girl that I'd been chatting up until that pair came in!!
To his credit Ray bought me a drink at the bar (after I'd offered to buy him one), we had the briefest of chats and from what I recall I think some of the talk about him is undeserved,,,,I wish him a speedy recovery.

Top, top player. You can see from the footage here how good he was:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43644865

Well past his best by the time he played for Hibs, but it should be remembered that Alex Miller had previously expressed a wish for a 'ten years younger Ray Wilkins' some time prior to actually signing him. He obviously hoped the older version could still do a job for us but Rangers got his last good years out of him I'd say.

I wouldn't say 61 is middle aged as not many people live to 122 but it's certainly not old from the point of view of passing away.

As has been said well past his best when he came to us and it showed unfortunately, but 61 is way too young in this day and age, especially for a person who would have been way fitter than well over half the folk his age right up to his 40s.

Had a look at their thread on the back of this and to be honest apart from a couple of folk on a three pager referring to us as in disparaging terms when mentioning that he had played for us it was very much a respectful thread towards him. Considering the cesspit that Kickback can descend into it was a decent effort.

In todays game, he'd be right up there with the best. He was that generations Toni Kroos, he just never gave the ball away.

I disagreed with his view on Scottish football, he had the typical hun viewpoint on how hard done they were.

Hearing all the ex players and pundits he worked beside talk about him, everyone to a man is gushing with their praise of the man.

He really appears to be one of the nicest people who's ever lived in the football world, and as others have said, 61 is no age.

He's an ex Hibby too into the bargain, and only has good things to say about us.

Condolences to his family in what must be a terrible time.

When he signed for Rangers a season ticket holder I knew said "Waste of money " I asked him a few months later " What a player never gives the ball away infact hes been here 3 months and never misplaced a past yet and that includes training ."

As a pundit always came over as a gent did Ray Wilkins, never slaughtered anyone more constructive in his break down of a player performances.
If you heard the soldier who was down on his luck this morning on Talksport telling you about the 10 minutes Wilkins had with him and how it changed his life it was a very moving insight into what Wilkins was all about .
