View Full Version : Ant McPartlin done for drink driving

Ant (from Ant & Dec) has been done for drink driving and their Saturday night takeaway show has been cancelled.
Been amazed by some peoples reaction on twitter, giving it "aww he's got mental health issues, he's struggling with a drink problem etc etc". IMO he deserves no sympathy for getting behind the wheel of a car drunk. I understand he has mental health issues and appears to have a drink problem which are both horrible to have but he willingly drove under the influence. A selfish act, putting other peoples lives at risk. A 3 year old had to be taken to hospital. I understand thankfully it was just as a precautionary check but never the less it could have been much worse!
No excuse for it I'm afraid. He has plenty money so could have afforded a taxi fare. Deciding to drive just shows complete thoughtlessness and disregard for others.

Not excusing him one bit but the report I read said he had been out walking the dog with his Mum prior to driving home from the park. Caught out from the night before maybe.

Haven't heard that but even if that is the case everyone knows you can't drive the morning after drinking and if he was still over the limit the next day it must have been a fairly heavy sesh.
No excuse for it I'm afraid. If he was just any average Joe Bloggs he would be crucified for it, he seems to be attracting some sympathy on twitter from folk just because of who he is. I feel really sorry for him if he is suffering with an alcohol problem and/or mental health issues but it doesn't justify his actions here.

Of course it might have been shock, but in the footage of him getting out of his car after the accident he looks bladdered. Haven't a clue who the guy is BTW.
As I understand it if you're over the limit you're charged there and then.
The reports I've seen, telly news, say he's not yet been charged.
Good lawyer or poor reporting?
I'll wait and see.

Certain celebs get off with murder (literally and metaphorically) because of their fame. In this case he has no excuse. With the money he's on, he can afford to have a chauffeur follow him around 24/7 (which any average Joe Bloggs can't afford btw). Knowing he has a drink problem, this is something he should have had set up when he was detoxed.

I think you are just arrested for failing the roadside breath test, you are charged at station once reading is confirmed on the machine you blow into.

His career is heading the same way as Michael Barrymore. Not sure he’ll come back from this

I reckon once all this calms down and he is out of rehab, him and Dec will find a gig somewhere. They are a goldmine, companies will want them.
He certainly wouldn't be the first celebrity to do something criminal and still continue a decent career afterwards.

Its classic celebrity PR crisis management now. Get caught doing something wrong, quickly disappear into rehab and try and flip it into a story about how you are the victim of some terrible affliction... sex addict, drink addict, gambling addict.

I don’t think some sympathy for his issues but no sympathy for the actual crime are mutually exclusive.

Apparently he was doing 50-60mph and trying to overtake on a bend. He looks rubbered when he’s getting out the car. Doesn’t look like it’s from the night before.

Seems he failed the road side breathalyser but was released from the police station on suspicion of drink driving, seems like he is being treated differently from joe blogs who would have been charged and appeared in court the next day, and the next day he books himself in to rehab.
I would take it his mum would be able to drive so why did she not drive instead of Ant who looked a bit worse for wear at the side of the road as he argued with the police.
Latest report says he has stepped down from the takeaway show
I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

jamie Carragher must be scratching his head about how he was treated for a minor offence of spitting, and Ant McP is getting sympathy for crashing in to several cars while allegedly drinking and driving.

I’m not quite sure I’d say spitting on someone is a minor offence but I would agree with the point in general.

I feel a wee bit sorry for his sidekick, Dec, who’s committed his career to their partnership which looks to be drifting on to the rocks.

One positive from this whole sorry saga.
I now know who is who, or which is which. Until now, AntandDec have just been a blur.
Every cloud, and all that.

Has he not been in rehab before?
Apparently he's had drink and drugs problems for years and its well known. So much so that its the main reason his wife is divorcing him as apparently she can't handle him anymore. He is reported to be worth £60million and is looking at losing at least half to her once its gone through.

Yep it's a shame for him. Can't really have one without the other and unfortunatly his pal has dragged their career down now.

Sorry silverhibee but your understanding of the process there is not correct. In the vast majority of cases of drink-driving you are arrested, taken to the station for the evidential breath or blood test, charged, and then released on Police bail. You then receive a summons in the post about a court date.
So he’s not being treated differently as far as I can tell here.

Funnily enough, it was Dec that was seen to be the ‘wild’ one of the two up until relatively recently. He was more into living the celebrity lifestyle than Ant and I think was seen as a womaniser whereas Ant was seen as a ‘family man’. How the public image of celebrities can be deceiving.

Charged today at a London police station with drink driving.

If the charge is simply drink driving, he’s a lucky man. Unconfirmed reports say he was driving like a madman and therefore should he not have been charged with reckless or dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs?
I really feel sorry for him and hope he does beat his addiction but what isn't defensible is his own personal choice to get into a car afterwords. I don't read much news etc but it seems even Jamie Carragher got more of a harsh deal from the media and public. When really comparing the two two offenses Ants is far worse.

Ant almost kills someone whilst driving under the influence -he gets a mass outpouring of sympathy and pity . Carragher spits on someone and folk want him lynched and his career ended in shame.

Arrested at 3pm so must ahve been a proper knees up the night afore.
Or he's been having a swally during the day.
Funnier that his mum was in the car also - she's supposed to be the one helping him beat his demons.
Jail him now

We got the same kind of thing on here after Boyle was done for drink-driving. I think it's a combination of some folk being able to relate to drink-driving (which can be done inadvertently) and the fact that alcoholism is now viewed as a disease.
I agree with you though. There's no excuse for driving over the limit and it's far more serious than spitting on someone.

Think he was arrested at 4pm which means it wasn't from the night before.
Do I have sympathy for his mental health problems? Yes.
Is he a massive twat for driving drunk? Yes.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion?
Easy to still be over the limit at 4pm the next day after a heavy session the previous night.

Seems unlikely he’d be released without charge on the day. Perhaps the later charges were to do with the accident?
Edit - https://www.drinkdriving.org/police_detention_bail.php
Looks like he gave a blood or urine sample.
