The gist of the theory is:

right wing = "conservative" = keep things the same and in order, unwilling to try new things
left wing = "progressive" = change things hoping you'll make them better, willing to experiment

That's conservative with a small "c". If you are that, it doesn't mean you are by default Conservative.

Although some truth in that. Afterall, it was the tories who legalised gay marriage i think? And two female PMs, to none from the 'progressive' parties (obv tge SNP can have done ok with Sturgeon as FM)

Hellish isn't it? Of course these surveys are rather spurious but I do find that when it comes to the bit I tend to take a defensive line.
