Man fined for helping a homeless man

This surely should be appealed.

A man who pulled in to a bus stop on Christmas Day to help a homeless man was fined by a council.

Lee Williamson, of Evington, Leicester, said he stopped to give a homeless man a blanket, hat, gloves, scarf, food, and chat to him.

He later received a £70 fine, despite there being no buses on 25 December.

To be fair is it not likely to have been a bus lane camera that’s caught him? And then it’ll be an automated fine based on the camera catching him in the lane?

My reading of the story was that he stopped in a potentially dangerous road position when there was alternative parking "metres away" (according to the Council).

It also said a similar situation had led to the death of a cyclist in 2016.

As altruistic as his motives may have been, it's still a stupid and dangerous thing to do.

They try and help ex soldiers off the streets and if that's not possible they try and at least equip them properly for life on the street. Knowing Lee there's no way he could have drove past this guy without seeing he was ok. I've heard a local businessman has paid the fine for him.

That's even worse. Do you mean to say the local authority hasn't rescinded the fine having found out the true story? What a shower of Shylocks. Absolutely mindboggling. We live in a heartless (authoritative) society.

Now, Sir Peter has said he will help overturn the fine, having first stated that "legal parking" had been available nearby.
He told BBC Radio Leicester: "You can take rules to a crazy extreme.
"We should do everything we can to make absolutely certain that Lee is not punished for doing this good deed and his parking fine is cancelled."

The man's a wizard. No wonder he's the mayor. :aok:

Naw. Sir Peter originally backed the fine 100%.

Then he realised how doing so totally made him look a pompous self-righteous idiot.

So he backtracked and 'changed' what passes for his mind.

'Course, if you're King Richard III you can park anywhere you like for as long as you like in Leicester.

I used to know a number of Edinburgh's TW's, and a fine bunch of chaps they were.

They had a code for situations like the two we're discussing - if the bosses were hunting them to do a nasty job, like "just pop into George Street and see to any illegally-parked vehicles you find" (half a mile of George Street and usually ten minutes before lousing time), it was "Brer Rabbit".

If they were on the beat and they turned into a street that was nose-to-tale with offenders (someone was bound to spot you before you got done) it was "Felix the Cat".

In trouble, Brer Rabbit laid low and said nuffin; Felix just kept on walking.

In both these cases, Felix would have been their exemplar. Don't stop. Don't look. Keep on walking.

Thing is, the soldier was done by the camera - some wee electronics geek sitting in a warm cosy office just punching a button and out comes the FPT. Not a warden job at all.

(Mr Magoo was handy as well - blind as a bat, never saw a thing. :devil:)
