View Full Version : Nicest footballer you've met

From the recent thread about footballers having a bad reputation, whats the nicest footballer you've ever came across?

I've been lucky to know a few personally, living in stockbridge a whole heap used to live there, specially that demon that is one rudi (cant bear to mention the rest)

So for me, the famous HKT  was my neighbour for just over the year he was at hibs, footballing ability aside, he was probably one of the most genuine footballers i've met, gracefully gave me and my mate at the time tickets and player lounge tickets to every match, and even when he moved to Inverness, then Raith still invited us out for drinks etc... I made the mistake of going to Caley vs hibs in a full hibs tracksuit and sitting behind the inverness dugout :greengrin:thumbsup:still speak to him now and he seems to be settled down.

Another one was the Old caley keeper Fraser, for me he was my fave keeper for years, and i remember after a spectacular save against celtic, i wrote to him, few weeks later got a reply and a brand spanking new pair of sells keeper gloves, being a goalie myself i treasured them until they wore through, shames hes stopped playing.

probably the highlight was being in Malaga airport for a night flight back to london a few years ago, decide to go to the toilet and im greeted by none other than the giant that was Ruud Van Nistleroy. Spoke for about 20 minutes and he was a great laugh, nice of him to take time, gathering it was about 1am, probably would'nt have spent that much time speaking if it was in the Pm.

so has a footballer ever done anything nice for you? or have you ever wrote to a player and got a response:thumbsup: interested to know how many of us 'normal' people actually get to socialise!

Gordon Strachan - watched some of the 1986 World Cup final with him due to the fact he stayed near my uncle and we 'door stepped' him at half time to get an autograph. He invited us in and watched some of the second half with me and a friend. Eric Black also - top man.

From players I know, Lee Bullen. Great bloke for a Jambo :aok: a man (friend) and player who is a good example that if you work hard enough and have belief you'll make it - it's not always about talent. He's earned where is he is and deserved it :agree:

Honourable mention for Chris Jackson on Hibs Kids days when other more senior players couldn't be arsed. Lovely guy.

Eric Schaedler for me.

Had the pleasure to meet him during his second spell with a us after a Dundee midweek game in the eighties was abandoned due to fog. I lived in the west at the time and was an unemployed teenager and had virtually no money and to get through at all for the game was a real effort.

He he was so great in speaking to me and others and said he and the other players would do what they could for the out of pocket punters. The second game admittance was free, got a a good crowd and an important 3-1 win as if I remember correctly we were close to the bottom end of the league that season.

A true down to earth fans man.

Absolute gent and spoke away and would have done so as long as I was there. I felt like I was being a pest though and left him to it.

This is a very subjective thread, as it can only rely on who the poster has actually met. There’s every chance Klaus Dietrich is the nicest guy you could ever meet but who would know? :greengrin

My vote would be for someone I suspect a fair number of us may have met and spoken to over the years - Stan Vincent. A really nice guy and a pleasure to talk with.

The majority of footballers I've met have mostly been sound for the few minutes that I spoke to them. The one I knew best is Donald Park - a great guy but a torn-faced wee *******, so I'll have to go for Willie Woodburn. He stayed not far from me, my brother worked in his garage and his house overlooked the "quarry pitches" (Kingsknowe Park) where I spent most of my free time. He was a real gent.

Absolute gent and spoke away and would have done so as long as I was there. I felt like I was being a pest though and left him to it.

Had my stag do at Easter road in April and after the match he spent 20 minutes talking to our group of 20, pictures etc. Great lad and a real gent.

Used to run in to david wotherspoon a lot after games and he was a really good guy too, shame it went down hill for him at Hibs as he was a really promising talent.

This isn't a piss take, I met Robbie Neilson when he was still playing and Lazlo was the manager. Very nice guy, we got chatting about a range of things and I mentioned my very good Yam mate and a funny story about him being a **** supporter. Cut a long story short he took my number and later sent a match worn top for my mate.

Jordan Henderson in the queue for burger king at a service station north Yorkshire.

He had just played for Sunderland V Liverpool and was telling us about how good Luis Suárez was on a pitch. Hardest player he faced.

The place had loads of Sunderland fans in it but no one came up to him. Just us speaking about football. Nice chap

Liam Henderson is a really nice lad. Spoke to him a few days after the cup final, he was down at ER picking up his car as it was the first time he'd been sober enough to get it. :greengrin

Erich Schaedler.

Me and my best mate at the time met Erich in 1970 before a reserve game against Morton. He was a trialist from Stirling Albion. He took time to speak to us and explained that he was not a HIBS player but was on trial and hoped to do well. He asked us to meet him behind the stand after the game. After the game he took us in to the home changing room let us run up the tunnel and out onto the pitch.A brilliant nice genuine guy. The rest they say is history. RIP Erich.

Me and my old man got a corporate at the Open at Muirfield a few years back and Darren Fletcher and his dad were there. There were a number of other so called ‘celebs’ in the Merc tent but Darren chose to chat to me and my old man about football rather than spout keek with them. [emoji16]
He was a really nice guy.

Tin hat time - Gary Locke used to come in to the restaurant I worked at when at uni with his missus and was sound. I used to have a bit of Hibs hearts banter with him and he was actually a decent.

Willie Murray I coached his wife and played tennis with him. Really nice guy. Came round to see me when my marriage broke up for a cup of tea and chat. Keith Wright too met him with my kids on portobello beach. Played football with us and came for coffee and cake with his wife.

He's been mentioned before but Darren McGreggor is a great guy as is Paul Hanlon.

Away from Hibs I met Gazza when I was about 8 at Glasgow Airport when Rangers were travelling on a pre season tour. He was running late for the flight but when I asked for his autograph (in my Hibs strip) he stopped and chatted for a couple of minutes, said some nice things about Hibs before repeating the process with about 20 other kids. Probably why he was running late. I've always hoped he does well and gets through his issues since then.

They always say that you should never meet your hero as you will end up disappointed. I remember the first time I met Pat Stanton. He certainly breaks the rule. You could never meet a nicer person. Met him tons of times since and he is still a god to me. Tam Preston used to come in to my work every week and got to know him well. Off his own back he got a Christmas card for my son who was about 10 at the time. It was addressed to Neil Martin from Neil Martin. (My son is named after him as he was the only Hibs player with that surname. ) Met him as well, lovely guy who blamed Jock Stein leaving for us not winning the league that year) Of the present day players John McGinn is a lovely guy. Sat for a good while after the league cup final talking to him and Liam Henderson who had his whole family with him. They are both a credit to their parents.

Gazza was in a pub I worked in when he slipped away from his wife at a wedding to have a drink. This was when he was at Rangers. Obviously looking back the signs were there of his crippling alcoholism but you can see how guys like that have their addiction enabled because he was brilliant company.

Lawrie Reilly was always the epitome of politeness when I've met him.I lived opposite the Bowlers Rest when I was a laddie, Lawrie was always up for a wee kick of the ball and a few words with us. Good sense of humour too.

Last time I spoke with him, he was in the company of Stanton, I introduced them to my youngest boy Patrick, and explained his middle name was Stanton. Aside from my intro embarrassing the King of Easter Road, Lawrie was faux outraged that my other one wasn't named after him. I said the next one would be named Lawrie and he was tickled by that. A promise I have still to fulfill, but judging by the number of women in my life and my occasionally reckless approach to fornication, you can never say never.

The nominations are:

Latapy, Archie & Gottskalksson - met them on my stag-do in a club ; hard to say if they were nice or not - we were all absolutely blootered so it's hard to say. Russell and Stevie disappeared quick smart but Ollie stayed around until he dropped a bottle of Becks we handed to him, and got absolutely ripped to bits then disappeared quick smart.

Craig Paterson was really sound, down to earth and had plenty of time to chat.

Lawrie Reilly - complete gentleman, and what a sense of humour.

Joelle Murray - invited my wee lassie on the pitch post-match and took time to chat to her and introduce her to all the players. She gets extra marks for being a Borderer too. Didn't even take offence to being told that her favourite player was Lisa Robertson ;)

And the winner is ...

Joelle Murray :)

They always say you should never meet your hero............ you go it! Pat Stanton is the most down to earth footballing legend i have met. Not only was he a fabulous footballer

for Hibs he is a pure Hibs man.......... Nothing is too much for him and will chat for ages about his Hibs. A true gentleman, honest and true. A perfect ambassador for the club.

Being one of us he knows what its like to stand on the terracing and hope with all hope that your team will overcome anyone else. After all the man is GOD!

Another mention should go to Mickey Weir he might be wee but he has the heart of a lion and is such a lovely guy.

I had the pleasure of inviting him and Keith Wright to many fundraising events in aid of a boys club i helped run for many years.

THey were a pleasure to work with and never let me down in attending when asked. Perfect gentlemen and also great ambassadors for their club!

Scott Brown was a good lad when I spoke to him when he was in The Chanter for the Celtic players Xmas Night Out, Barca v R Madrid was on the telly and he was happy to chat away for a wee while. Some of the punters faces were a picture when a few of The Rangers players wandered in too. I backed Benzema for the first goal so, it was quite a good night.

Graeme Robertson is a good lad too.

All the ex-Hibbies that turn up for The London Hibs Burns Suppers have done themselves proud too. (The train journey down/back is a right good chuckle).

Martin Chivers, i actually played against him. He ran a pub team from a hotel he owned which i think was called Brookmans park?

He was a centre half in those days, and there was always an invite back to the hotel afterwards, where he'd put a spread on as good as some weddings i've been to. :greengrin

Eric Stevenson was a terrific lovely guy

Eric ran my local (waverley hotel, bonnyrigg) and was a gem of a guy. Gordon Rae stayed behind our house when I was young and again a gem. My wife met Marvin Bartley in asda and he was brilliant, she even put him on the phone to me for a quick chat. Really nice. But I would expect most Hibs players to be nice especially to their own supporters

When I was based at Rosyth I used to travel in on the train to games from Inverkeithing and usually met up with Des Bremner also spoke to Jackie Mac senior in the 4 in hand a few times both great guys.

I did meet Pat Stanton once but we were both having a piss in the bogs in the old main stand so didn't think it was an appropriate time to strike up a conversation!

Matt Le Tissier. I was the steward looking after him when he played a Wessex League match for Eastleigh at Andover. He came up and played for them to help us get a bigger crowd as we had been ripped off by our previous chairman.

It worked. We reckon we got an extra 500 (700 instead of 200). Most of the crowd seemed to be kids who were fans of his, hence the need for a steward to keep things calm.

When I thanked him for coming he turned round, shook my hand, told me it was his pleasure, andthanked me for looking after him. A true professional and a great man.

Surprisingly, Willie Johnston aka |Junky Johnston was also pretty cool, always stuck £20 behind the buffet for drinks for me n me mates on the train.

I’d agree with Joelle.

When Hibs Ladies were in Romania for the champions league group games, there were two games each match day. After Hibs had played Kharkiv at lunchtime, the girls returned to the stadium to watch Olimpia v. Swansea.

The players were in official Hibs training gear, and a young girl approached Joelle with her autograph book. Joelle signed the book and took the girl up to meet the other players and had everyone in the squad sign, before the delighted young girl returned to her seat.

Nothing dramatic, perhaps easy to do, but a primary school girl in Romania is probably now a Hibee for life.

It’s the quiet, low key moments, when there’s no audience that count.

A class act and a great representative of the club.

Rangers used to train at Clydeside cricket club and guy I worked with's son was the captain there, so met a fair few of them in the bar whenever I travelled to Glasgow in the late 90's. Most, including our ex goalie, were bams but met Ally McCoist there once and chatted for no more than two minutes.
About 2 years later he scored his 500th (I think - round number anyways) on the same night we beat Killie away 3-1 and when I got back to my hotel and walked up to the bar, he was there with his wife. Didn't recognise him - but when I went to the bar, he called over "Great result for your boys tonight, were you at the game?" and bought me a beer. Had a chat and commended him on his achievement. Astounded me that he would spot a nobody and remember the team they followed.

This was pre-smartphones but one of my mates had a camera with him. He asked "any chance of a photo Andy?". "Aye, nae bother" came the reply.

My mate promptly handed the camera to Watson and went and posed with his wife. They both burst out laughing and he took the photo anyway.

Willie Miller (of Hibs) came along to a Hibs-List event at the Persevere in the early 1990s and seemed a great guy.

Can't believe John Doolan hasn't had a mention yet! Lovely guy.

Franck Sauzée. After he had been sacked by Hibs. A total gentleman. Beautiful manners.

When I was a teenager seeking the autographs of Hibs players, Pat Stanton, always so polite.

One time, after we played Aberdeen midweek, a guy called I think Henning Boll?, Danish Aberdeen player, who sat outside ER and was so cool and chatted to the kids who were there. He IIRC smoked a pipe. He was so chilled and relaxed. I was a teenager and had never met anyone like this. He made an impression. Really cool guy.

Another time must have been the early seventies after a midweek game, I was leaving the West stand, the last couple of stairs I stumbled and barged into the back of John Greig.

"Oh, I am really sorry" says mucho embarrassed me.

Aye , nae problem, hen", says Big JG.

Considering I had barged into him, I thought that was quite generous!

I have seen Darren McGregor at countless functions and he is a lovely guy, endless patience with fans demands for photo's, autographs and chats. The great thing is it is not an act.
A very impressive man who is :top marksclass on and off the pitch.
