I was wondering if there was any old techno music fans amongst us. I spent a huge part of the 90s in clubs and all nighters like rezerection. If so give us some of your favourite tunes. I’ll start.

Did you go clubbing in Edinburgh?
Used to love tribal and pure, then dogma, jakn, react, digital. Recently animal hospital was pretty good too.

I was into it, preferred the detroit and the german stuff to the cheesy hardcore. The Trésor stuff from Berlin was absolutely fantastic. A lot of us were the same, drifted from house to techno to electro and then stopped listening to it completely when we got old and sensible and the big commercial clubs took over.

Was it "Sublime" that they used to hold at Wilkie House?
I wasn't a regular, but some of the messiest, wildest, most brilliant nights of my life were in there. I only think I went a couple of times but if I'd gone much more then I probably wouldn't be here today.
(I also remember how bleak the few days afterwards could be, I shudder thinking about it).
Not sure if you would call it "techno" exactly but there were a few 90s "dance bands" that I saw around that time (95-98) who were outstanding live - Orbital used to be quite an experience, Lemonjelly at T in the Park were pretty good too.

Tried to gain entry to Trésor nightclub in Berlin last summer and as expected knocked back at the door. Heard all the stories about the techno clubs in Berlin and their ultra strict door policy but we tried around 4 clubs and didn't get in a single one.
We were told to dress very minimalistic, keep calm in the queue and have some knowledge on who was playing that night but no luck. Anyone else experienced this in Berlin?

Loved Orbital after being introduced to them by a good friend.
I know what you mean by definition - I always thought of them as a sort of 'intelligent techno'. What got me most was that they recorded fantastic studio albums but also put on outstanding live performances, where they would adapt their tracks to reflect they were playing in front of a crowd, almost like rock bands often do.

My mate was just there at new year. Said it is basically impossible to get in unless you are in a mixed group, ie no groups of lads. In terms of dress, he was wearing his kilt as he had been advised the opposite, dress in a way you stand out from the average crowd. Who knows what the rules are.
He was at Berghain, apparently do what you like, apart from take photographs😂😂

I was into it early 90's, best times probably around 91-92. Calton Studios nearly every Saturday night and went to all the early things at Livingston Forum, Technodrome, Rezerection from the first one till around 93 (I think) and also a few big ones down south like Fantazia at Castle Donnington.
Tunes that stand out for me were, amongst many other great ones:

I saw them at the Cream Millennium party in Liverpool.
They mixed Chime into the bells at midnight, it was outstanding.
Pure and Wave, loved it. Remember a few of us on a night shift heading there in a taxi then getting back to work in time to clock off. Mad times

I never went to Tresor but went to some brilliant hardcore nights in Germany in about 94, amazing venues, no idea even what towns we went to! still very underground scene, a lot different to Pure, and the Germans all seemed to be better dressed and not as off their faces as the Scots :greengrin My daughter is into dance music now, and she went to Tresor last year, which is the most 'make you feel old' thing its possible to conceive of. I gave her my old Tresor mix tape and she looked at it like it was a phonograph :faf:

I was going to start a similar thread, more of that in a minute. Pure and Wave were incredible nights to be at, (although a special mention should be made for the Sativa drummers). I was playing my 2 vinyl Pure albums at New Year. Picking a favourite band is almost impossible but Orbital are the only band that I can’t not go and see (If that makes sense). I was in Manchester to see them early December, it was incredible. You had to be there to believe the vibrations in the toilets. They are playing Brighton and Hull this year and I still need to organise time off work. Back on topic for a Pure classic.

Been to both Watergate and Tresor, we were not in a mixed group and didn't have any issues with entry. We had a great night/early-morning in both, only place we got knocked back from was Weekend which was booked for a private event.

Is the sound system really that good in Berghain? No photos allowed or no mirrors or reflective surfaces anywhere? Sounds a crazy, crazy place. I actually walked around it during the week once, shut however.
Read an article in the rolling stone magazine saying it's been losing its way a little with all the tourists coming in, not as authentic as it once was.

I’m sure it isn’t, where is once established. It was 4 years back when we went and it was all that I’d hoped for. Me & my girlfriend got in no problem and from recollection we never met anyone else that wasn’t living there.
Wracking my brains who else was playing that night? We were lucky with an amazing line up as well as PAS but can’t mind.
Sound system was very clean from what i remember.
Never went to the ‘darkroom’ for obvious reasons. Everyone really sound & another thing i mind was everyone putting their empty bottles into crates (very tidy)..rolled into sunday (had 3hrs kip as i’m no spring chicken) and back to Panorama Bar....Things get more hazy but Mano LevTough played a storming set.

That was my first time seeing him. Had the chance a few times but never taken it up as the harder side of techno isn’t usually my thing.
He was absolutely class though, was playing proper groovy stuff. Definitely helped that he was playing on a behemoth of a soundsystem right enough

Surgeons up there with one of best gigs i’ve been to...In a wee cellar bar in Dublin, intense.
Was watching this set last night - just exquisite. The last 20 minutes is almost perfection.

Was at Dekmantel last summer. Amazing festival, probably the best I've attended bar Burning Man in the States.

i don’t care whatever the music snobs say, this was decent. And this guy paved the way for techno in Scotland.

I remember proper hardcore when joey beltram was the second hardest dj of the night. These days will never be beaten, because everything after those nights is just a recreation of events. You were either there or you weren’t.When I first started going to raves and clubs it was all that sort of heavy belgian style stuff like Beltram, The Hypnotist, Human Resource etc. Then i remember hearing this and being absolutely blown away.

Back then my favourite DJs were Fabio, DJ Seduction, Top Buzz, Ellis Dee

When I lived in Germany I remember Sven Vãth playing his legendary 12 hour sets with a couple of crates of beer and, eh, a few other things. I still love accident in paradise, strangely its very chilled given his pumping DJ sets. Saw him, Carl Cox and some others at Brixton Academy, messy.

I saw Carl Cox loads of times, he was a great DJ.

Still is 😉 one of the legends of the dance scene
Aha, it's coming back to me, the Brixton rave had Josh Wink playing an acid set.

Genuine question as I know next to nothing about this sort of music, other than I enjoy the trainspotting soundtrack...
When people talk about “a great DJ” does it usually mean that they’re particularly talented on decks (like a guitarist for example) when you go see them live, or is it more that they’ve got a good ear for knowing what mixes well and they produce good music? Or a mix of both/something else?
Like I say, it’s not something I know anything about and I’ve traditionally been one of those unenlightened ones that see DJs as making it big from playing other folk’s records!

Knowing how to manipulate the dancefloor through the choice of tunes as well.
Back in the rave days it was also about having the right contacts as well, those that made a decent fist of it had a source of the white label demo pressings of stuff sent out to them from record shops on a weekly basis. Ultimately the quality of the tunes they got would determine how good they could be.
One of my mates who was the main DJ at Calton Studios back then got in with a shop called music power in Essex and was getting the same tunes as the top dj's like Fabio, Grooverider, Ellis Dee, Carl Cox etc were getting at that time. It was sometimes months before you'd hear others playing them.

Cheers for the response 👍 I hear a few friends and colleagues on about good DJs, and I couldn’t tell the difference between one of the top dogs and the guy from the local nightclub, but at least I know a bit more about what makes the best, the best, now!

You could also look at the fact that some dj's are producers. Literally bringing together a number of strands to create their own music. DJs traditionally are selectors that move one tune into the next or have some sort of link so theres a flow.
Some DJ's are great selectors of amazing tunes but cant mix them for toffee. Personally I dont mind that as long ass they know their limitations and do what they are good at
