Does anybody know the extent of the injury and how long we're looking at. Gutted he's out again just when he gave an interview about feeling ready to get back fully fit :(

Early reports suggesting Lennon has said he could be out the rest of the season. :boo hoo:

Yip, looks like it's a serious achilles heel injury and he'll be out for the rest of the season. Are these friendlies actually worth the risk of injuries? :fuming:

Apparently he just broke down off the ball, could have happened at any time unfortunately.

But it could happen at any time, plus he has struggled for fitness this season which might have been a contributing factor in todays injury.

Heard somebody at work say that was SDGs 6th injury since he came to Hibs. At the very least he has had groin, knee, hamstring and achilles injuries.

If that's all on the same side that may be an indication of inherent weakness.

The only positive is this has happened during the January transfer window and I hope Lennon can go and get a right back signed on loan till end of season.

Gutted for poor SDG tho

I suspect after this injury Gray has now played his last game for us.

All the best, Hibs legend of legends. :boo hoo:

We definitely need to sign another right back in this window.

Yup. We could have done with another fullback regardless, but now it's a must. I'd imagine loaning in a young player from a Premier League team might be our best shout if funds are tight for a mid term fix. Hopefully someone better than McGivern.

As an aside, I see Dundee have just extended the contract of their left back who was previously at Bilbao. He's always impressed me when I've seen him and would have liked to see us try and sign him.

Just goes to show how bad a deal 3yrs for Whittaker is. Struggling with a niggling injury too and we can't really have 3-4 right backs on the books.

What is it about Hibs and unfit right-backs?

Gray and Whittaker both injured. Clancy was constantly injured. Michael Hart was slow and finished by the time he reached us as a result of injuries. Maybury put in a good shift but was old and slow by the time he was with us.

What do we need to do to get someone out there who is reasonably athletic and able to play most weeks?

(All the while we've had a wee machine putting in a power of work, crunching into challenges and getting up, going from box to box and playing every single week over on the left side - boy will we miss him when the sad day comes that he can't play for us any more.)

I'd imagine those 6 injuries are just the ones that have stopped him playing. It was well documented that, under Stubbsy, he played through the pain barrier almost weekly as we didn't have another RB option.

I suspect this is starting to catch up with him.

Gutted for him.

Seems it will possibly be a full rupture or partial Achilles’ tendon rupture.

Both very nasty injuries.

The guy is a living legend - that goal will never get old and I wish him all the best for a healthy return.

Bad news about.the injury but maybe.does.us a favour in forcing the issue of getting another right back in ...short loan and permanent in the summer

Wasnt it an achilles problem that forced Le God to retire. It can take a long time to heal, had it myself and it stopped me from running, jogging, even restricted my hill walking, so for guys who have to run and sprint as professional footballers do, it’s not good at all.

He was actually coming back from Achilles injury and a groin injury the summer prior to that (Scottish cup final, injury picked up at rangers) before he got the managers role and decided to retire. I seem to remember it happeneing against AEK and can still hear the sound of him smashing the dugout in frustration. Good points though.

Good luck David, Sir.

Whilst at hibs David Gray has made

34 appearances 14/15
47 appearances 15/16
41 appearances 16/17

So to suggest he's injury prone and missed a whole chunk of games is utter nonsense. He's been unlucky this year, yet still played 12 times and been on the bench in other games.

So we might have a poor history with right backs but you need to go back about four years to find the start of it.

It is one of the most horrible injuries going. Totally ruined many careers including Santi Cazorla right now at Arsenal. Poor guy has been through hell the last 2 years.

I think over the past few seasons the expectations placed upon Gray and Stevenson have been huge. Neither are world beaters but both are solid and reliable. Here's to Gray recovering fully from his injury.

Especially under Stubbs when we were playing the diamond and they were expected to get up and down the pitch all game.

How often did we see Stevenson crossing to the back post for Gray under Stubbs?! Both are good servants to the club.

I ruptured my Achilles shuffling around ineffectively at the back during a veterans' 11s game in May - very, very sore. A weird pop and it felt like someone had battered me on the back of the leg with a baseball bat. On crutches for three months and it's still not right.

Pro sportspeople will get surgery and the best rehab but it's still a long recovery process. Scotland rugby player Richie Vernon is just coming back after 10 months or so.

Sir David is made of steel though, and not yet 30, so hopefully he can get over this in time for next season.

Gutted for him, IMO he was very unlucky to find himself out of the team when Whittaker came in, after watching Whittaker in his first few outings I still couldn't for the life of me see what he was bringing to the table that made him a better option than SDG ... Gray was faster, just as good in the air and by a distance a better defender, not to mention our bloody captain.

Whatever the case, with Gray now out for the season and Whittaker seemingly picking up loads of niggling injuries we need to sort out the right back position ... bringing in a loan player for this gives me the fear I have to say, but it looks like its going to be our best and only option.

Come the summer this is a situation we are going to have to focus our full attention on, we have neglected both full back positions for far too long, I realise Whittaker was an attempt to shore things up at RB but it appears he isn't going to be the solution we had hoped for even as cover for Gray, which from what I've seen is what he should have ended up as. Its mental that we have gone season after season with no significant challenge to the ever dependable Stevenson at LB, if he was to get injured we are going to end up with no specialist full back on either side, which is far from ideal.

Was speaking to a Norwich season ticket holder on Thursday, seems the opinion of Whittaker from day one at Carrow Road was that he was running through quick sand.

Has looked terribly slow since his return (injury or not).
