Had a bit of banter with a mate in the pub about the biggest clubs in the Spanish, Italian and French Leagues we have played in Europe or friendlies at ER
we came up with
Spain
Real Madrid, Barca, Valencia, Seville
Italy
Juventus,Roma, Torino
France
Marseille, Strasbourg
Can anybody add any more ??
We then started on England and both thought we had probably played all the Premier and Championship teams either at ER or away since WW2, except maybe Brentford and Burton Albion
Pretty sure someone will come along shortly adding clubs to the list :greengrin

Used to play them regularly in the fifties, sadly including this game http://progs.fairlyoriginal.com/arsenal-vs-hibernian-7-1 Too late, sorry.
There are far more big game friendlies where we have competed against some of Europe's top clubs than has so far been mentioned. Bayern M [3-0] to start it off.

No, not entirely. Late 80's , pre-season. However, the mind can be quite creative these days.

If it's the match I'm thinking of then it was about late November 1985. I was up here on holiday and remember going to Easter Road and us beaten a Dutch team. Maybe won 4-2 but not sure. I was in the Famous Five end before it was the FF. :greengrin

It was indeed 2005, the game was included on the Season Ticket as part of the Early Bird rewards. It was the first time I saw Malkowski play. (I think he had already played in some pre-season games in Ireland.) I remember thinking he looked like a good solid keeper. :greengrin

Back to big European teams, I remember us drawing with Schalke 04 in Eddie Turnbull's second game in charge and I think we beat Bayern Munich in a friendly in late 50s or early 60s?
I remember us beating Feyenoord in a midweek friendly at ER in 1985.
December 85, we won 4-2.
We also played MVV Maastricht in Dave Ewing's last game as manager at the end of season 70-71. Alex Cropley had just returned from injury and he was immense in that game & everyone there could see he was something special. The rest is, as they say, history, as he started the following season on fire on the left wing, in the league cup section games and was attracting loads of interest from down South, particularly Leeds, 200K being the price quoted in the media [then papers :greengrin], our new manager, Eddie Turnbull was detrerminded not to sell. Anyway I degress :greengrin
I can#t believe haven't seen our 1990 pre-season tour of the South, when we played Watford, Swindon & the infamous Millwall game.
Back to big European teams, I remember us drawing with Schalke 04 in Eddie Turnbull's second game in charge and I think we beat Bayern Munich in a friendly in late 50s or early 60s?
I remember the Schalke keeper, Norbert Nigbur, playing a stormer, in the 0-0 draw that was all Hibs. Nigbur was the German back up keeper to Sepp Maier and went to the 74 WC finals. The only keeper's performance at ER I saw that came close to him that day was McCloy's in the 1973 Scottish cup replay.
We beat Bayern 3-0.
We played Porto the first European team I saw Hibs play in 1967. We beat them 3-0 at Easter Road and got beat 3-1 in Porto. Joe Davie scored a penalty to take us through. We played Napoli in the next round and Leeds in the third round.
