Question for any Council employees or anyone else on the know. Before I moved to West Lothian I sometimes used to pay my Council Tax for Edinburgh by posting them a cheque. However, having moved back into the area they don't seem to still offer this facility or at least advertise it.

If I posted a cheque with all the correct details to them would they accept it?

Reason I'm asking is had a major hassle with an electronic payment that after almost a month they finally acknowledged they had the money and credited my account. All the payment details were correct. Don't want to set up a direct debit as their available days of the month don't suit at the moment, although I'll probably do this for next year to avoid any further hassle.

Any assistance appreciated.

Cheers.

You can pay your monthly instalment online with your debit card. No need for direct debit.

I'm generally okay with direct debits but I wouldn't trust Edinburgh council with them. I always pay by standing order - they claim that they don't offer that means, but it's just a case of setting up the instruction myself each year, using their bank details on the back of the demand letter, and my customer number as the reference. That way I also get to choose a monthly date that suits me.

Cheers. I liked posting them a cheque as it used to take ages to come off my account but stopped them chasing me for the payment!
