It's on various Twitter accounts tonight so nowhere "official" yet.

Hopefully it's not true and although it would be very sick if it's some kind of hoax it would be the lesser of two evils.

He was still playing in the US fairly recently. Surely there would have been some news before now if he was ill given the clubs he played for?

Hope it's just a misunderstanding.

Coincidentally, of all the clubs he has played for, he made most appearances with us (76) compared to the others. Also scored more goals with us than any other team he played for.

I wish him well in his fight and hope that he can make a full recovery.

Such a shame!

He was a great player for us when Yogi first brought him in, he's still my avatar on his website never changed it, his screamer at Ibrox on one of our customary 0-3 victories is my fondest memory of his time here! Hope the rumours aren't as bad and there is some hope for Liam and his family!

Genuinely gutted at this news but more hopeful now we know he’s not in a hospice and is being treated for the illness.

Very sad news. I gather it's pancreatic cancer, which is essentially as bad as it gets. As those on here (and I'm sure there are a good number) who have seen family or friends affected by cancer, the unfortunate thing is that the rhetoric used about 'fighting', 'battling' or 'standing up' to it may be well intentioned but when it comes to cancer it's misplaced. This piece puts it quite well:

Does it really matter? Many cancer sufferers use the description themselves, if they believe it gives them inspiration or indeed helps those around them then that's what matters. My own Dad is battling terminal cancer right now and has been for over twelve months, it is a battle he can't win but hey ho never the less in his mind he is battling it.

I remember the lad seemed to have the world at his feet in the autumn of 2003 when he burst into O’Neills Celtic team. A couple of well taken goals in high profile Champions league matches helped of course but Celtic were talking about building their future round him, offering him lucrative contracts etc and of course Alex Ferguson was waiting to swoop.

This is unfair, much as I dislike Celtic.

Liam Miller left their club under a cloud, they were very bitter about the way he hotfooted off to Man Utd just as soon as he'd broken into their team. At the time Celtic were struggling to come to terms with the fact that they were disappearing lower and lower down the food chain and it hurt their pride that their new starlet would ever want to leave "paradise". He probably deserved a bit of abuse upon returning to Celtic Park, he'd probably understand and accept that. And as well as he played, he probably used to drive him on to reach as high a level of performance as he was capable of producing, and as many good performances as we've had in Glasgow in recent years, I'd not seen as many as good as that one up to that point. He was magnificent.

As un-christian as Celtic generally are, I think that when their former player finds himself battling something as nasty as pancreatic cancer, there should be nothing cynical about them finding some forgiveness as they wish that player well?

Is there any Hibs fan that doesn't wish Terry Butcher well as he comes to terms with the loss of his son? His performance as Hibs manager and what he may or may not have done when holding that position pales into total insignificance when a fellow human is facing such a difficult time.

Not looking good if it is indeed pancreatic cancer. Only really one way to survive that and that's to have a Whipple (removal of the organ) op if it hasn't spread or touching the major blood vessels next to the head of the pancreas, which is often the case. Unfortunately even that has a high failure rate.

I've had family members with the same cancer and the reason it gets so many people is because it creates little or no symptoms at the beginning. When the symptoms do appear, they start of vague and the most common one is having the ****s/diarrhoea which a lot of people think nothing of until other symptoms appear like painless jaundice etc. However, pancreatic related diarrhoea is pretty different from your normal run of the mill upset belly stuff. It's usually pale (yellow/beige/clay/white), floats and leaves a grease trail on the water. If anyone ever gets this on a constant basis, don't let your doc fob you off with IBS. Lots of docs miss this too and believe it or not a lot of docs never think of the pancreas. It's always the colon or the tummy they think of or even the gallbladder. There's a reason this is known as the silent killer as it causes next to no symptoms when it's stage 1-3 and when it does, it's usually the last thing people think of. I'd be surprised if most people on here even knew where their pancreas is located and what it does. Yet it's in line to become the 3rd most common cancer in a few years time.

You are right. My dad has pancreatic cancer, and is now in the final stages. It's not good.

Really sorry to hear that. I wouldn't wish this illness on anyone.

So unfair.

Best wishes to your dad and the rest of your family for the time that he has left.

Totally agree with you, my wife is in the same boat, we live life in 3 month blocks, from 1 scan to the next.

I can't even begin to imagine/understand what you're going through, and others on this thread too, but I wish you all the very best. Raising awareness, raising funds and looking at prevention as well as cure, is something we should be doing as a society. I hope things go well for you all. It's such a sobering thread and makes you realise what's truly important in life.

Thank you, we manage but when we attend hospital for the scan results its a difficult time. I worry about what the inevitable outcome will have on our children & grandchildren, they adore their Mum/Gran.

Cancer is a horrible disease which attacks indiscriminately, young and old and I feel for anyone who has to deal with it, my thought to Liam and anyone else fighting this at the moment.

I am so very sorry to hear about your situation and those of others fighting this horrible disease.

I am confident though that the quiet dignity you have exhibited on this thread, and the courage of the man who stands behind those words, will stand you and your family in very good stead in all and any tribulations to come.

My very best wishes to you all and to all those suffering similar circumstances.

I empathise entirely.

It's almost a high to get a"no change" result, but it fades to fear as the next scan approaches. It's a tough existence.

Going through the same thing with my Dad unfortunately. He was given months but so far he's fighting it well.

Scan to scan sums it up well though.

My heart goes out to you and your family,Lago.
In'92 when our son was 15 & daughter 13, my wife and I went through similar when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and later with ovarian cancer and a brain tumour.
Every hospital appointment/scan we attended over the years, we went hoping for the best but prepared for the worst.
At the time I admired the way my wife coped with all that was happening to her, and that admiration for her is still with me.
I, and many others on here, will be thinking of you, your wife and family. Stay strong my friend.

23 years ago breast cancer diagnosed followed by surgery. Check ups for 5 years then all clear. 2years ago a persistent cough took my wife to our GP & the eventual out come was the cancer had returned & was in her lung, bones, liver. We were told right at the beginning there was no cure only life extension for a number of years. You will understand what it's like to explain to your children, tell grandchildren their Gran is just having a check up at hospital. But in the meantime life goes on. I've had so many kind thoughts from many on here.
I thank you for yours.

Enjoy and cherish every moment you have together as a family unit Lago. My elderly mum was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August and she was gone within three weeks. Life is precious and I wish you you all of my best wishes.....

Thank you for that and I wish the best for you too. August was quite a month - back to Scotland twice in a matter of weeks, returned to Texas on the Saturday after the funeral and my house flooded due to Hurricane Harvey on the Monday. Quite a year in fact.....

Can I just take this opportunity to thank everyone who has sent me their kind thoughts. I am by up bringing & nature a private person, in general not comfortable discussing my wife's illness, but in this situation I have found it something of a comfort.

Thank you all, it is much appreciated.
