N Ireland v Switzerland (Thurs and Sun)
Croatia v Greece (Thurs and Sun)
Sweden v Italy (Fri and Mon)
Denmark v Rep Ireland (Sat and Tues)

and for good measure the intercontinental playoffs

Honduras v Australia (Fri and Wed)
NZ v Peru (Fri and Wed)

Some pretty interesting match ups there. My own guessometer says Switzerland, Croatia, going for a bit of a shock with Sweden over Italy and I think Ireland.
Australia and Peru for the other two spots.

Peru is actually a 3am GMT kickoff Saturday morning. Hopefully they'll keep it tight in Wellington and then do the job back at home. Be great to see them at another big tournament. Wonder if BT sport or sky are showing it?

Would be great to see them get through for that alone (I'm too young to have been scarred by 1978).

I remember about ten years ago when a qualification campaign started, UEFA said the play-offs would be drawn randomly.

After all the matches were played there was a sudden change of heart and seedlings were to be introduced. **** all to do with France and Portugal unexpectedly finishing in the play off positions of course. 😆

Makes you wonder, especially with sponsorship and money becoming more influential in the game as time passes.

I also heard somewhere that the Italian TV deal for world cup rights hasn't been signed yet. It's very much in FIFAs financial interest for Italy to get through.

No goals in the England match has been taken at 5/1. Probably won’t happen, but it’s being played like a training game so far.

0-0 half time between the swedes and Italians. Ventura so bloody minded in a) playing whatever formation he wants, as long as it’s not 433 and b) leaving out Italy’s most in form player, Insigne, because he won’t play 433.

Darmian at left wing back or Insigne left of a front 3, it’s Craig Levein levels of stubbornness. I really hope it doesn’t cost us tonight.

And Jorghino’s currently one of the best technical midfielders in the world, yet can’t get a cap as Ventura continually picks Parolo, who’s spent all game chasing shadows and making Brian Kerr look like Xavi.

Get it sorted, Ventura, before it’s too late.

Quite enjoyed the first half, Sweden have done quite well but Italy carved the best chance of the half. Although quite entertaining and interesting you half get the impression that both teams would take a 0-0.

Yeah, agree with that. Sweden almost playing the perfect half, been pretty impressed with them. Belotti’s header was really unlucky though.

IMO him and Immobile just don’t work together, they’re too similar and a front pairing at this level leaves a team so exposed in midfield. Wide players with quality and awareness is the key at this level, especially away from home.

Im watching the Sweden Italy game, I'll catch up with the England game later on, on the highlights. Flicked over at half time to catch the last 10 minutes of so of the first half of the England game, to be fair considering the team fielded they seemed to be doing quite well. Looking very Scotlandesque in that kit though I have to say.

Ventura GTF.

It was really unlucky in terms of the massive deflected goal and Darmian hitting the post but, regardless, it’s just not good enough. The tactics and personnel are down to him, the formation(s) are killing them.

The press are going to absolutely crucify him again, tomorrow.

Ireland rarely produce exceptional players but they've always got competitive players in abundance. I think the fact a lot of them grow up playing Gaelic football has a part to play in explaining that. It's a more physically demanding game that develops skills that translate well to association football IMO.

Not sure about that. I'd make Denmark favourites. One goal is all they need to leave that Ireland team needing two goals, and with Eriksen they have a player who can do anything.

I hope the Nordies can pull off a shock tonight as I'd like to see them qualify for the buzz it would create around the place.

However I think it'll be a case of Ulster says D'oh tonight as I think the Swiss will be too strong. Failure will at least have the silver lining of Kyle Lafferty being absent from next year's finals. So either way there'll definitely be something to celebrate tonight

Unthinkable that Italy won’t qualify for a World Cup yet that’s exactly what I think will happen tonight.

Not anywhere near the best Italy team however the players individually are more than capable of dispatching the swedes but, ultimately, will probably be hamstrung yet again by more baffling management decisions.

Can see 1-0 or 2-0 then a sucker punch Swedish goal near the end. Despite that, there’s 80k at a raucous San Siro so the swedes may well freeze, they wouldn’t be the first...

How can anyone that has any love for football not enjoy that, or just that entire game to be honest. That’s what football is all about.

So in the 11 years since that have Italy been involved in any exciting games? :greengrin

Argh!!!

By the way, that’s a penalty to Italy there too.

Nope. Inexplicably left out, much like Jorghino up till today.

It’ll probably cost Ventura his job.

It would be strange to have a World Cup without Italy. It's a bit like no Germany or Brazil.

He really doesn't seem to know what he's doing. Strange, since there seems to be countless Italian managers being successful elsewhere. They plumped for the Italian Colin Calderwood.

Yep, exactly my thoughts too.

You feel that Italy need a goal now, nerves are shredded!

 Its been a quality first half. Its had everything except goals.

Maybe its just me, but im bored with it although the 2nd half has been a bit better.

There's been a lack of any real quality in my opinion, its turned into a bruising affair with more fouls than a derby game.

This Swedish team might not have the best players you have ever seen but they are so well organised. Italy not for the first time in their history are better at defending a goal than looking for one.

Still think there might be a late goal in this one though.

Almost unthinkable to have a world cup without Italy. Insigne not featuring tonight is criminal and should be a sacking offence in it's own right.

It will be, if Italy don’t score here.
