There are some great pages on social media that share football images from past and present, so this thread is for sharing and reminiscing on those Hibs themed images that you might stumble across or have yourself. Can be anything from Easter Road, players, fans, badges, newspaper reports etc and from any era old or new. I'll kick it off with this one from the 70's.

Either that’s where the referee used to stand for corners or we were leading the way trialling fourth officials as we did with the floodlights!

In thought that too but it must be the Ref in what he thinks is the best position to watch a corner. He might be right :greengrin

That's a great photo :flag:Fully agree - a cracker of a photograph. Not seen this one before.

Also an 'unusual' one - to capture both 'the cave' and the top tier of the huge old East terracing. Seeing the crowd packed in fully around the corner is great also.

Looks like it must have been taken from the top section of the old main stand?

Jeez, we think we get good crowds now but there must be well over 40,000 at that game given that the other end would have been packed too.

In saying that, I gather crowds fluctuated quite wildly from huge to modest back then depending on the opponents.

Ah, Bobby Smith (far right - dunno if it was a perm or natural ??)- I so much wanted to be him as a young laddie !!

Maybe a silly question. What's the official doing behind the goal line? Strange position to be in.

That looks like the Hun (attacking) we're playing so in those days, the referee would be be standing there to -

Sleekitly nod/handle any loose balls in for a goal for them
Sleekitly nod/handle any loose balls in for a goal for them and then book any/all Hibs-players for complaining
Sleekitly nod/handle any loose balls in for a goal for them and then send-off any/all Hibs-players for complaining
Sleekitly nod/handle any loose balls in for a goal for them and then not give one solitary ounce of **** if the Hibs-players complained or not because - 'He's the peepil' !

.............................................

Some of the Hibs V Hun games I witnessed in the early 70's - particuarly games 'refereed' (fixed !) by Bobby Davidson (Airdrie) - and this scenario isn't as far-fetched as it reads !!

Back in the days before social media I used to keep scrap books ... I still have 4 of them covering Hibs seasons 76/77 .. 77/78 .. 83/84 and 84/85. There could be more, but I cant find them.

I cant scan them, but they are packed with stickers, photos and match reports of every game for those seasons. I've just dug them out and a quick skim through showed some interesting stuff like Rangers v Hibs at Ibrox with a crowd of 16,000 in March 84 or a crowd of 15,000 for Celtic v Hibs at Celtic park in March 84 ... it seems the greatest fans in the world weren't so great when their team wasn't doing well :greengrin

Also in January 1985 Hibs chairman Kenny Waugh was in the papers denying he was about to sell the club to some guy called 'Tom Farmer'

Amusingly given current events, in February 1985 Hibs were kicking up a stink about a Hearts fanzine that had published disparaging pen pictures of the Hibs squad and staff .... with Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer apologising for it and making it clear Hearts had nothing to do with it :greengrin

I would be happy to pass on the scrapbooks to any Hibs historian who wants them, I'm sure there will be content in them you cant source any more.

Mark Caughey? A Northern Ireland striker who barely played, let alone scored, for us. Think he did OK at Hamilton subsequently.

IIRC Kenny Waugh flew out to the 1986 World Cup to sign him.

Eddie Gray didn't play. Possibly Frank?

The team was Shaw (Letheran); Reaney, Cherry; Bremner, Ellam, Yorath; Lorimer, Clarke, Jordan, Bates, F. Gray.

7th November 1973 :greengrin

Interesting piece from Peter Lorimer:-

Peter Lorimer claimed that Leeds “wanted out” of the competition and fielded a team of young, mainly Scottish players together with himself and Billy Bremner, who appreciated the trip back home to Scotland. Hibs were quoted at odds of 3-1 and the Leeds players had clubbed together to put £500 on the hosts. He said of the game, “Billy was playing sweeper, that’s how seriously Don was taking it, and he was back-heeling it here, messing about there and joking his way through the game. Unfortunately young John in goal was wanting to make a name for himself. He was not in on the scam and was flinging himself about left and right, making fabulous saves, until he got injured and had to go off. He was replaced by an even younger lad, a Welsh kid called Glan Letheran, and we thought ‘we are in here, Glan will be nervous’. Sure enough he was just as agile as John had been and, come what may, Hibs could not get the ball in the net until, with ten minutes to go, they broke clear down the right, the cross came over and their inside-forward headed home. We gave each other a knowing look, winked and whispered ‘thank God for that’. But the linesman had put his flag up and, despite our protestations that it was all right, the goal was disallowed. At full time, with the scores level, we had done our money. All bets are settled, of course, on ninety minutes. It went to penalties and Don’s view was that, having come so far, we might as well do our best now to win it. Damned right! We needed to win the match to collect the bonuses to cover the bet! And win it we did.”

Bremner gave the best individual performance I have ever seen in that game at sweeper covering everything no way on this earth he wasnt trying as would have been so easy to throw the game if he wanted to.

To check this I'm going to have to invest £3.31 on ebay for a used copy of that Lorimer Autobiog unless CropleyWG offers his??

Surely cannot be true?
Was Lorimer such as to make this sort of stuff up?Did he become an alkie and have to sell a book?

Anyone?

Save yourself the £3.31. I wouldn't believe a word anybody from that Leeds side said. Then again, a betting scam was right up their street, so you never know.

I would be disappointed if it is true.... like many others, I've built up a mythology around that game. Part of that, of course, is that performance by Bremner.

How things have changed over the years...

Me and my big brother went to the game on the bus, I was 7 and my brother was 12. My Dad was working back shift in the Post Office and said he would meet us there, just stand in the usual place!!!

As you can see in the photo, ER was busting at the seems Lol it took my Dad half an hour to wade through the fans as he came in the Dunbar end but had to walk to the 2nd tier in line with the 18 yard box near the cave end (FF to you young ones).

Bloody memories - Fantastic

PS I loved standing right at the front of the 2nd tier where there was a walkway, I could see all the game as there was no one in front of me and I could also watch everyone fighting and chucking beer cans into the opposite supporters who were about 30 feet away!! Imagine that happening now? :greengrin

Sounds like a crock as there no way on this earth they werent trying.

The team was still full of established internationals and the youngsters like Jordan and Frank Gray were hardly plucked from obscurity. The only unknowns were the sub goalie and Ellam. Lorimer is bull****ting. Remember that night well. Hibs were awesome, just couldnae score.

I once spoke with Allan Clarke (Paul Reaney was also there) about this game, when in the hospitality at Elland Road some years back. And whilst it wasn't as one sided as Lorimer paints it. They also mentioned it was a younger/less experienced side Revie put out. And he did say Revie's eye was on the league championship not Europe (or at least the UEFA Cup). The keepers were 3rd/4th choice I think with Harvey and Stewart just signed from Ayr Utd being 1st and 2nd that season.

There seems to be some truth in this as the team he fielded either side of this game for the league had Harvey, Madeley, Jones, Hunter & McQueen in all of which played 30+ league games that year. And 3 of these played in the first leg.

I’m not old enough to remember but the site I seen the photo on said 26p too.

Shame these stations have all gone, they wouldn’t have needed to ruin Edinburgh and bankrupt it with the trams and the trains actually would have taken us somewhere useful.

As a bairn my bedroom walls and roof were covered completely with Hibs posters and cuttings from programmes and the Evening News! Basically chronicling the Alex Miller years!

Is this the model you see on the ER stadium tour? Looks familiar.

I used to enter at the turnstiles at ground level in picture 1. I can’t remember climbing up 3 flights of steps though to get to the top of East terracing. Probably did and thought nothing of it when I was a lad up to age 16-17 back in the 60s/70s. Although, used to exit via the steps down the North terracing which took you out to top of St Clair Street. You ask - why not enter at North Terracing? If memory serves me right, there wasn’t a Boys gate there but there was for the East.

Other thing missing from the model is the floodlight pylons. Picture 2 would have had one right in the corner there. Same at the Dunbar end in Picture 3 next to the half time scoreboard.

that pic got me thinking as well, i 'think' it was 3 flights but like yourself was only a wee laddie and could have been 2, if bet365 had a bet going i would put £1 on it being the 3 :hmmm: the walls were also reasonably easy to climb over at some parts :)

Sprouleflyer is right. 1 October 1995. Game was live on Sunday afternoon on STV and the Hearts fans did indeed fail to show up leaving half the bottom tier of the South empty as well the entire section they were allocated in the main stand.

We had pumped them 3 times the season before, probably why they didnt fancy it.

Paterson, I can’t remember his first name - was it not a couple of minutes into his debut?

Ian Henry. I was at Berwick that day but don't think it wasA New Year's game. We were keen to see him as he was a new signing but he got a broken leg in the 1st minute and never started a hibs game again.

I've checked and the 31st January 1981 was a Saturday so looks accurate.

Does anyone know where I can find more info regarding the non-playing members in 1903? There is a long standing family story that a relative was involved in the early days of the Club and this photo is the only evidence we have. He’s called McPhee, standing in the back row wearing a suit so perhaps some committee member?

Until 21/05/16 this was one of our most famous teams and I’m
stll astonished there is a family connection!

Alan Lugton's books are pretty detailed when it comes to committee members and the likes.

If you can't get hold of a copy, give me a shout and I'll have a look at mine.

Alan McPhie (McPhee alternative spelling sometimes used) was on the Hibernian Committee from 1897 to 1903 when he was made a Director, until his death on 4th September 1903.

Suffered a bad leg break playing for the reserves / colts. I was a nipper at the game. Looked like a pop star didn't he?
His brother Eric is (or was) to be found on the rounds doing after dinner speaking and smokers and he's done a few Hibs ones (and some Hertz ones I think. But he's a Hibby).
