It took England until injury time to score against them after playing against 10 men for most of the second half so to do pretty much the same but with so many chances and almost no chances against us adds up to a good performance. I digress, but I read West Germany enquiries on Shade’s availability. I remember McGrain from early ‘80’s and how good he still was. Of course, we regularly qualified then.

I’m just hoping my boys can see Scotland in a World Cup. There was always the anticipation of whether we’d make the second round and the party atmosphere. Scots guys came home or ended up marrying and staying with exotic foreign beauties and we all loved the partying.

It wasn't a spectacular performance but it wasn't awful either. That wasn't our best team and we still managed to beat a decent Slovakian side, had the ball hit the net instead of the crossbar we could of ended up with a 2 or 3 goal win.

I agree it’s about winning the game. Just wish we didn’t make hard work of it. They are no mugs but that was against 10 men, folk should remember that before making out we were unreal.

Be great to make it to the World Cup been far to long.

Talking sheite again, nobody is making out we were unreal. We peppered their goal ALL night, their keeper was man of the match, the bar was hit twice and we won the game.

Hibs only beat Rangers away by 1 goal against 10 men, was that eye bleeding enough for you?

Second placed teams as it stands with all results v bottom placed teams removed;

Portugal - P 6 15 pts GD +18 (Bottom team in group could change)
Denmark - P 7 13 pts GD +7 (Bottom team in group cannot change)
Northern Ireland - P 7 13 pt GD +5 (Bottom team in group cannot change)

I just can't see it - we're in prime 'glorious failure' territory here, and every past experience of following Scotland tells me how the story ends.

I so hope they prove me wrong, but away to Slovenia needing a win isn't what I'd have wanted for our last game.

Of course, it's great that it's currently in our hands, but it's a massive ask.

Notouriosuly difficult to play versus 10 men as has always been the case as the team with 10 often re-organise and up the effort and the Slovaks are no mugs to begin with.

We forced the play & deserved to win, hit the bar twice and the keeper had a great game.

Tonight is positive, the performance was always going to be second to any kind of win. And we did well.

If Hibs can shake off the glorious failure tag so can Scotland. I’d drop Bannan or Fletcher for McGinn or McGregor though and take the game to them. We really just need to throw everything at them.

We certainly deserved the win no arguments about it. I’m saying for me we didn’t use the ball well enough for a lot of the game. 3 CM slowed it down I’d have liked a more attacking midfield.

But you are correct a win is a win and it puts us in with a right good chance on Sunday.

I don’t think anyone thinks he’s brilliant compared to the best of the best, but for Scotland he’s been reliable and is a very good defender by SPL standards. Think he’s a better player than McGregor tbh, although I still wouldn’t want him anywhere near Hibs.

Just home. What a crazy match that was.

Should have had a pen in the first few mins then they're a man down 1/4 in to the match. We peppered their goal and it's hardly surprising their keeper got MOTM with some incredible saves, followed closely by the West stand side crossbar.

On another night we've have won by 3 or 4. At times yeah we were a bit slow moving the ball and the tempo wasn't high enough but let's not forget, technically Slovakia are a bloody good side with some cracking players. 10 men or not they're a hard side to beat.

Overall pass marks for everyone. I felt Morrison/Phillips and Forrest had poor 2nd halfs but other than that we were solid enough.

Every football fan thinks their club players should be in ahead of another at international level. SJM would have been a good sub to make but Strachan has earned his coin tonight and must take credit for the turnaround in our campaign despite everyone else knowing a better line up - his subs contributed heavily. And like it or not, defensively we've been fairly solid against the 3 top teams in our group with 4 left footed defenders, 1 of which plays for hearts.

On to Sunday now, very tough away match against a side that hasn't conceded at home in this campaign. Intriguing match up but I for one am buzzing.

Slovakia will almost certainly beat Malta at home and they have a better goal difference so if we draw on Sunday and Slovakia win then they'll finish second on goal difference and we'll be out.

Results against the bottom side are only discounted when working out if a team has finished as one of the eight best runners up to qualify for the play offs.

Credit Strachan for sticking Martin on with half an hour to go. He did well and it allowed Griffiths to start facing the goal rather than playing with his back to it. Anya also did well since Tierney faded in the second half and was always cutting inside on to his left. Bannan was good after moving left when Forrest went off. Pace in central midfield was a bit plodding at times. Morrison was poor and Phillips didn't make much of an impression. Forrest just disappeared after bright start.

Slovenia yet to concede at home. It's going to be tough and very tense.

Daring to look ahead, Portugal are home to Switzerland in final game, so the Swiss could well be in the playoffs

Our defence as a whole has improved massively since we went with the Mulgrew/Berra partnership. Neither are great but together they've conceded 2 goals in 4 matches, 3 of which were against good sides (should only be one but for the mistakes made by Armstrong/Mulgrew and Gordon that led to the England equaliser)

I appreciate the above may not sit well on here but if D.Mcgregor had put in these performances for Scotland, we'd be waxing lyrical about him.

So, took my son to his first Scotland game last night and he loved it.

I thought Scotland started well and had a stonewall penalty turned down. The keepers save from Berra's header was better than Gordons against us on Saturday in my opinion. Sending off was correct, but I don't think it particularly changed the game too much. We were the better team up to then, and if anything, losing a man actually upped Slovakias performance (as it often does when losing a man). I think over the whole piece, there was only a 15 minute spell near the start of the second half where we appeared to sit too deep, but we got going again and thoroughly deserved the win. I thought we played well, and the much maligned Chris Martin actually done really well.

Sunday will no doubt put us through the wringer I'm sure, but the confidence is there right now, our tails are up, so hopefully that drives us on against another decent side who now have nothing to play for.

Watching Scotland can be like watching Hibs at times. Last night in particular - decent performance, lots of chances, outstanding keeping performance from the opponent. But it was all worth it for that winning goal - Hampden went mental! loved it!

Good post. I thought we dropped deep and played poor for 15/20 mins. Sadly this seems to be frowned upon. Possession was 51% in fav of us last night and against 10 men you’d think we could have stretched them more.

You mean Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak, one of the world's most expensive goalies?

Was reading a stat on him the other day.

Played 99 for Athletico

Conceded 49
Shut outs 50

Cant remember what it was called, I think someone linked to it on here a good few years ago, but there was a really funny blog parodying JC and his utter self-confidence in that game. It was written in the style of him talking to himself. Absolutely hilarious.

If you find it post it, I can just imagine the stuff in it 😂

What a rollercoaster ride that was. Hamsik had me ****ting it every time he was on the ball as looked extremely dangerous - thought Slovakia might nick a breakaway goal.

We full deserved that bit of luck as we battered them. I thought it was admirable and deserves praise that the team continued till the end to take a measured controlled approach that finally paid off (eventually :greengrin) instead of just booting the ball long all the time to Martin which would have been expected. I don't think we will have enough to win out in Slovenia but after the position we were in previously would have for sure taken going to the last day.:agree:

One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen written about the national team. It even outdoes Clive James’ famous line about the Peruvians coming from behind to beat us in 1978 -“...they suddenly revealed an ability to run faster with the ball than the Scottish players could without the ball” :greengrin

It was 4 of the last 6 at home. Now 5 of the last 7.

Still quite a stat, and shows the way the team keep fighting right to the end. We’ve been missing that “never say die” attitude for a while.

Can’t believe it was 1998 since the last one. Mind watching the Brazil game in the pub and the roof about coming off when Collins stuck away the pen.

Went to Italy for the 1990 WC - the Tartan-Army (before THAT game against Costa Rica) in Genoa that day were the loudest I've ever heard !. Walking through the underground-tunnel in Genoa-station I genuinely thought my ears were gonna be damaged, such was the volume of the singing - watching thousands of them marching up to the stadium led by a piper was just incredible !

During England's lacklustre 1-0 win over Slovenia in a World Cup qualifier (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41423558)on Thursday night at Wembley, the home fans spent most of the second half hurling paper aeroplanes at each other.

slovakian coach making claims of 'underhand' tactics

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41525040

"To be honest, since our arrival in Scotland there have been too many coincidences," he said.
"I'm too experienced to believe in coincidences but I won't say any more."

The Slovakia manager was asked if he was talking about his team's baggage being delayed at Glasgow Airport, and he replied: "That's how it started." He then refused to answer any more questions on the issue.

wonder what other tactics were used :dunno: were bagpipes being played outside the hotel to 4 am in the morning :greengrin

Good. Teams shouldn't have it easy coming to Scotland.

Delayed baggage at Glasgow Airport isn't anything to do with any kind of conspiracy - it's just how **** Glasgow Airport is at getting baggage through :greengrin

I don’t think they were happy with the choice of referee. They had previously accused him of being corrupt in another game.

Italy would hammer Scotland if we got them in the playoffs. Avoid them and Portugal

They hammered the mighty macedonia last night right enough. :na na:
