I've always just presumed it's because white ones won't clean aswell and it saves a little money if they don't have to keep shelling out for new white shorts but I really don't have a ciue.

Most of the younger teams wear the green shorts as they play a lot of games on astro and it stains the white shorts and they look skanky after a while.
The goalie kits look really bad as the rubber in the astro stains them.
