Barcelona 'attack': Van 'drives into dozens of people' on La Rambla in the city centre.

FFS, brutal. Seen the usual twitter videos of people walking about filming (instead of helping) and there are a lot of bodies lying around the street.

I've been there, it's not that far from the nou camp.
Shocking that this sort of thing can happen.

I was there last week, staying on Las Ramblas. I am watching the TV and looking at armed police going through areas I was at last week, especially the food market.

Reports that 13 are dead so far. Awful!

Think the thread title needs updated to terrorist attack as it's now beyond doubt.

I can't say I'm surprised at this news anymore, sadly. This will continue to happen and no measures will ever be truly effective. These people are already living in countries like The UK, Spain and France.

My thoughts go out to those affected by this latest act of evil.

Not really shocked any more to be honest.

We live in a world where people are guided by their nasty little books and fairy stories rather than their feelings of compassion towards their fellow man.

Got a few friends in Barcelona, thankfully all are ok.

Whilst the numbers quoted are bad, given how busy Las Ramblas and the Placa De Catalunya are at this time of year it really could have been so much worse. I know it's said all the time when these things happen but Barcelona is a tough city with resilient people. They'll face up to things.

My work has got a group there in a hotel on Las Ramblas right now - I work for a tour operator. Apparently and unsurprisingly its chaos - police, ambulance, roads shut off, injured people on the deck all over the joint etc

Must be terrifying - mercifully all our clients are ok but my heart goes out to those affected and their families.

I've not long returned from there. It's horrible. Las Ramblas was constantly packed when I was on it.

Shocking. What can really be done to stop acts of such total nihilism? Really sad and scary stuff.

Police have killed 5 would-be attackers wearing explosive vests in nearby Cambrils.

What an awful series of events, which have thankfully been halted from being much worse.

Confirmed by the mayor of Barcelona as a jihadist attack.

Excellent news.

A lot of people say that security/intelligence services are too intrusive but it's a price we should be all willing to pay.

However, when governments (such as our own) bring in legalisation to open security loopholes and censor what they like online, all under the guise of protecting the public, that is when it should be met with a healthy amount of skepticism imo.

Brilliant work by the Spanish police halting the second attack in Cambrils. Seeing that one person died but could have been far worse.

I tend to agree. But there is more can be done in the wake of these vehicle attacks, and it's something that's been advocated for decades by the more progressive planners - keep motor vehicles out of busy city centre areas alltogether. And make sure they can't easily access them. Not just a price worth paying - it would actually make urban areas more pleasant.

TBF no amount of intrusive powers will stop a group of mates chatting in a park, hatching a plot, renting a van and going down to B&Q for machetes and axes.

Snoopers Charter is totally ineffective against that.

They will just change their tactics to suit the environment they want to kill in, there is no defence.

Daily Express saying Edinburgh might be the next target because it is vulnerable. It is, but so is just about every city in the world. Creating fear headlines like this is what the terrorists want. Okay, remind people to be vigilant but there's no need to sensationalise something that hasn't happened.
Mind you, it is the Express. I suppose they couldn't resist a wee hit at the Scottish tourist industry. Every little bit helps as the say.

Edinburgh particularly during the festival and hogmanay has always been highlighted as a soft target by the Security services long before the latest trend of atrocities begun. Hence the resilience exercises, project Griffin etc that many large businesses and essential services participate in. Nothing has changed in that respect.

The daily mail ran an article the other week suggesting 10 UK seaside towns that were the next target. My gf is from Scarborough and it was listed at #2 and her Facebook was full of the article being shared. As you say; creates panic, feeds hate and division without anything actually happening - exactly what the bad guys want.

Noone else seemed to question how the daily mail would know the targets before anyone else...

Both rags preach hate and division on a daily basis. One day they might by correct, but if they cover all the bases they surely will be.

Most of us will go about our business as usual, and hope sanity prevails in all sectors of society.

Great to see the people of Spain come together tonight. Seeing the king making an appearance on the streets of Barcelona and leading the march is quite a special moment.
