Great bit of footage put up on the Tartanarmy board site from a user called Ersatz Thistle who I think also has the facebook and Scotland international football magazine, Scottish Epistles.

Hibs including famous five in technicolour glory. Great footage of a game against St Mirren and one at Ibrox, dont think we won 3-2 though.

I've got this on an old video cassette called 'Inside Easter Road' which I no longer have the facility to play so it's good to see it again.

What strikes me is how bl**dy fantastic our kit is. There must be fans who chose to support Hibs on the basis of that alone. I also love the simply yellow jumper, white shorts and greens socks worn by the keeper (Tommy Younger?).

The rubble at the back of the terracing is presumably part of the process of extending that the ground at that time. The stadium looked much better without the cowshed.

Great crowd for a game v St Mirren, but the crowd at Ibrox is something else. Looks like about 100,000 strong!

Is the 1949 year right? I cant find a record of us playing St Mirren at home in '49. In 48/49 season it was in '48 and 49/50 season it was in '50, unless im reading my fitbaststs wrong.

I noticed a few players wearing green and white harlequin type shirts during training - was this an official match shirt?

Going by that footage the East terracing was being extended. Our record attendance of 65k must have been before the extension if I've got the year right. Incredible. How did they all get in?!

When it first goes through the tunnel into the staidum, I was wondering what all the goal posts were doing there. :greengrin

That would make a class away top in white and bottle green and black shorts.

According to wikipedia:

"Rangers won the league with a 2–2 draw in their last match, away to Third Lanark, a game in which Rangers took a 2–0 lead before Thirds fought back to 2–2. Another goal for Third Lanark would have handed the title to Hibernian.
A few days previously, Rangers had drawn 0–0 with Hibs at Ibrox before a crowd of 101,000, the largest crowd to watch a League match in Britain since the war, a record that still stands. Had Hibs won this match they would have become champions."

John McGinn and Simon Murray doppelgangers both spotted on that footage.

Easter Road itself hasn't changed.

Is it bad that I was shouting abuse at a piece of silent film stock when the Hun took to the field?

My grandad was at the 65k+ game v Hearts. I remember him saying it was before the east got extended and the game was rubbish. It got interrupted constantly as the crowd kept spilling onto the pitch.

Nope. One of the few times I've seen footage of Hibs not winning at Ibrox 😉

Heath and safety out the window in those days lolmy dad(gone now[emoji852]) said standing in the east was like wee birds in a nest ,squashed that close together you couldn't raise your hands up when hibs scored ,great image of the amount of people that crammed into easter road each game ,but a little frightening when you think about it , health and safety indeed [emoji16]

Great footage, in particular I liked the look of that green and white harlequin top at about 7 mins 45. Whether it was a training top or our second shirt i'd like to see that as our away or third shirt one season. I think it'd be a great seller as we've never had a top like that in my lifetime.

Just as now we had no need for a second shirt then. It's all, about money now.

If u put 'Easter Road parade 1949" into Google, it takes you to the "National Library of Scotland" Archive thread, where the footage is stored.

Just click the link and marvel at the Colour/Quality of this silent film.

I have previously been told that the "harlequin shirt" was used bt our 3rd team in the East of Scotland League, and worn by the first team as a training top.

That is wonderful

I can just about remember ER being like that

I can I think remember the East being 3 tiers?

When you think of how many folk now live in and around Edinburgh compared to then, folk must have come from far and wide to watch Hibs in those days to get crowds like that, even more so than now.

Like many the East Terrace rubble confused me as I too thought it was Salisbury Crags but knew it couldn't be.

Amazing to see how undeveloped Leith was in those days.

Great to see the Famous Five team in their pomp, although match footage was a bit iffy.

There is something magical about a Hibs home shirt of most vintage's

Only ever two in my time. From the very top it was like watching a game of Subbuteo.
